Danault and Iafallo were 3rd and 6th in scoring for the team. But who makes these ridiculous decisions?! You are something else, Herby.

He was also visibly atrocious from the bumper.

Not saying he was good -- but not many players were, obviously. But to act like it's a ridiculous decision to put your top 6 scorers on the PP is kind of...well, ridiculous.
like I said, it is when they prove to be awful and then you never adjust. ESPECIALLY when you have your leading pp scorer and best shot on the 2nd unit. the 2nd unit was notably better at the end of the year. Even Arvidsson wasnt on first unit

Yeah the Arvidsson thing was also inexcusable. They went lefty heavy on the PP when you have a pretty good RH finisher on the 2nd unit and you are sending out Danault and Iafallo?

Starting him there no. Leaving him there, yes it was. Doing the same things and being surprised when you get the same result… you know the rest.

Why I think this was more McLellan than Sturm is that when Iafallo was playing well, McLellan insisted Iafallo is a “star” in this league.

While a useful middle 6 winger, for the most part, he is by no means a star player. Head coach was kinda delusional there.

Ultimately the buck stops with the head coach. But I am honestly not sure what exactly the dynamic is there amongst the Kings staff. Hopefully this interview brings more clarity there.

What are his goals for the prospects this season and what he plans to do to help get them to reach them? Thanks Jesse. Keep up the good work.

I feel like it's worse: when he was positioned there on one rare occasion he scored. Then he was back on the left side pretty soon thereafter. He scored a number of his goals from that left side, but he was there such a high percentage of the time that a highlight video is misleading as to how frequently it didn't work (and sometimes caused the play to slow down since he has to stop the puck first and then shoot).

The difference in how often he can take a slapshot (i.e., likely a one-timer) from one side versus the other is pretty apparent here:

My questions certainly weren't asking why he sucks. They are about thought process and decision making.

You also had Jim Fox calling out the coaches right after Kaliyev socred that beautiful one timer in Dallas. He said something like, you have to question why he's not playing that side on the PP.

His one timer is a freaking rifle, its world class. Not only do they need to move him to the correct side, they need to revolve the whole PP around his shot OVI style and if it works you run Kaliyev on both units. It can not be any worse than the crap they rolled out last year.

Even just having his shot as a threat would change the whole PP where teams would cheat on him and open up other lanes.

Well, it did. Don’t want to be asked that question? Don’t keep doing the same thing over and over and then acting confused why the result is the same.

there was a stretch in the middle of the season that was pretty laughable and was punctuated by PP1 not scoring for extended times, then PP2 with a mix of kids going out and scoring nearly immediately despite starting in their defensive end, then PP1 going out and promptly giving up a SHG. The PP was literally losing us games.

Why does the PP suck is a legitimate question. It doesn't have to be asked that way of course but I 100% want to know what's going thru a pro coach's head at that point because it looks awful to us mere mortals.

Yup totally. I don’t expect anyone to go in front of the org and say “you’re an abject failure”. That’s what this place is for. ;) But the question deserves to be asked in a tactful way.

How does he balance giving ice time to guys likely to stay in the AHL all year vs guys who likely are going to be called up at some point? Speaking mostly to building linemate chemistry in order to win

Jesse, found it interesting in most recent pod that you would put Fiala on 2nd line considering everyone is healthy….and Arvy with Kopitar.

I'd wanna see how that worked first.

I am deeply mistrustful of the "obvious" or "easy" answers in life.

Kings get talented winger.
Kings MUST put talented winger on top line.

I'm not buying it. As always I hope it works out that way... but I am skeptical.

But you had stated earlier in the pod that it was the obvious the Kopitar/Arvy combo didn’t work….you confused me.

I think Zach said that and I didn't argue.

I don't think 11/33 don't work together... I didn't think 23/11/33 worked particularly well together

for... reasons.

I am big of that for finding out who has chemistry. We need to find that Rob and Big level of chemistry for Fiala

If it's not too late - can you ask Coach Sturm about Kaliyev's usage last year? Specifically that he was known as a goal scorer and offensive specialist and ended up playing a 4th line role and a "defensive" role for the majority of the season. Was that planned? Or just how the season evolved?
Also how do they view his role for the coming season ?
