Interesting matchup of two teams that have 2nd lines that might be better offensively than their first lines.

Can Minnesota slow down Makarov?

Can Latvia stop the puck from getting to Hull?

Who does Frank Nighbor focus on checking?

I don't think there's much doubt in Latvia's case.

I assume Nighbor checks Hull.

I put Laperriere-MacInnis with them to not only empower the powerplay style offence, but also to counter Latvia's counter offensive.

Then I have the Sakic line against KLM. Sakic is just plain better than Larianov and the strength of Van Impe and Litzenberger will match Krutov while the speed of Burrows and Goulet will match Makarov.

The top lines match-up well.

Latvia has the edge in goal.

Minnesota has the edge in depth players.

But the big differencemaker is special teams. Minnesota is superior on PK (Daneyko and Mantha will not be effective against Andreychuk in the crease.) and far superior on the powerplay.

To me, Mantha seems like the perfect guy to handle Andreychuk in the crease.

Putting Van Impe out against the KLM line would be a mistake, major speed mismatch. Hatcher, pre-knee injury was a much better skater, and player than Van Impe.

1st, congratulations, Nalyd and good luck in the next round.

sorry i was not here to debate, but i was unable to log on for several days, and when i was able a couple of days ago, the boards died again after a short period. i also had some computer problems recently that also caused me to miss most of the recent NHL playoff games.

i would have put nighbor against sakic.
