Quick note on this... thanks to Van for doing the update (incidently I've added my third pairing and replaced Ragulin with Drinkwater on my 2nd PP unit).

I do want to ask though why people think it's acceptable to only have two listed PK units. There's no way a team can get by with two forward groups for the PK. It takes way too much effort to do it with just four forwards, even for one two minute PP. You've got to have at least that third forward group ready to go.

Good to see you, paper. I was beginning to wonder when you'd be back, and if we'd run out of players before then. (You were down to one). If you're in the territorial capital, will you be taking in any of the national mixed curling championships?

VanI, it looks great, but I do agree with mullin that all PK units should be listed for teams.

any deviations from the standard format can be put on your roster page, on the assassination page, and on posts of playoff match-ups

you want three PKs, four alternate captains, 12 PP forwards (yes, one team does), then by all means do so in those other places

for ease and fairness of comparison, the TOP two PP and PK units can be posted on the divisional rivalry

What I'm getting at is that the standard procedure of two PK units is unrealistic and almost ridiculous. No team can possibly survive with just two PK units.

While you're probably right in a sense, that just four forwards aren't enough for every PK situation, most teams do employ four forwards(or two units) for the bulk of PKing, with there obviously being some others to fill in when needed. I think in the match-up threads, if you think it'll be a problem, you certainly could ask "Who's going to fill in on the PK when those guys are tired", but otherwise I have no problem with just posting your basic two PK units. I highly doubt you'll always see the same line combos every game and same PP units every game, either, but there's no real need to complicate things to that extent.

I'm fine with having three PK units! I could have 5!

I just don't agree with that. You're going to at least see three units of forwards jump over the boards on an ideal PK.

At least 3? More than 3 isn't even that realistic. Your average shift probably runs around 45 seconds on a PK, so even if everything was timed perfectly, which it won't be, that leaves probably 30 seconds tops for that last unit out there. Hard to get more than one in there. And I think the more times you change on the fly in a PK, when most changes are usually done, the more times you open up a chance for the other team to capitalize.

Case in point my own team. I've only posted two forward units(I don't have any actual defensive units, just a rotation), but in the event that another pair of forwards is needed, due to fatigue or whatever, then I'd just send two of Francis, Alfredsson, Moore and Carpenter over the boards. No actual unit in there, as I want my best PKers out there as much as possible, but a nice group of guys I can send just in case.

Your average shift 5 on 5 is 45 seconds. On the PK it's shorter. Work hard, dig the pucks free, ice that sucker and change.

Yeah, I knew I was reaching with that one but hoped you wouldn't catch it. But, at the same time, you're still out there for a good 30 seconds, and that 30 seconds is usually longer because timing is always out of whack. Either way, considering most NHL teams have two basic forward units for PKing and then 2-4 other forwards who fill in for spot duty, I don't think it's unrealistic and ridiculous for teams to post only 2 main units. If you go up against a team that posted 2 units and doesn't really have anyone else that can really kill a penalty, then feel free to challenge them on it and you'll probably win a couple of votes your way. But, I don't think it should be mandatory to post more units, because if I know the voters here, that will simply hurt you unless you have 6 strong PKing forwards.

I just don't agree with that. You're going to at least see three units of forwards jump over the boards on an ideal PK.

I don't that's necessarily the case for many teams. While some teams use that strategies, a number of teams have 4 forwards who eat up most of the PK time, with one or two forwards who get minimal ice time (<1 min/game) usually in situations where there is a string of penalties or when one of the regular penalty killing forwards are in the box. I know this is the case for the Canucks, who largely use two units on the PK.

Just a quick sample from NHL.com, alphabetically:

Ana - 4 forwards between about 3 and 5 min/game, two more at about 1 min/game.
Atl - 4 forwards between about 2.5 and 3.5 min/game, 2 forwards under 45 sec/game.
Boston - 5 forwards between about 2 and 3 min/game, next under 1 min/game.

etc.

I agree with Leopold, while the third units will probably get a bit of time, it's not really going to be very significant in the grand scheme of things. I don't mind listing a third unit, but I think that it's splitting hairs at that point and won't really make much of a difference in terms of ranking teams.
