All Time Draft #10 - The Minor League Draft

The draft is over!

The draft will last 24 rounds. You must draft 2 goalies, 6 defensemen, 12 forwards and a coach, with 3 additional picks to be used for whatever position(s) you want.

Trading is allowed. Trades must be equal in numbers, 2 picks for 2 picks, 1 player and a pick for 2 picks, and so on. Really lopsided trades can be vetoed. Rounds 15/16 through 23/24 will be double picks per round.

The time limit is 4 hours. If you miss a time window don't panic, just make up the pick ASAP. You can PM your preferred pick to me beforehand and be assured I won't ever be drafting your top pick for whatever round because my pre-draft prospect list is so darn long I can do without (even if with a grimace). Newly added procedure: If the HfBoards goes down then email your pick (or shortlist) to [email protected] and the picks will be sorted out afterwards.

Suggestion: POST A REASON OR STATISTIC OR DESCRIPTION WITH YOUR PICK to aid discussion and let us know a bit about the pick, as many may not be household names, especially from other eras.

You must PM the next GM after your selection. And please post a notice to that effect on the draft thread to ensure a smooth flow to the draft.

Any player from any league or era are eligible as long as they were not drafted in the ATD#10. As soon as a pick is posted, the next team's clock will begin even if an ineligible player is chosen: the pick will simply be made up as soon as possible.

Player selection should be based on what they have done (the 'next best' draft, so to speak, the greatest all-time careers not honored by being picked in the main atd#10 draft), and not what they will do in the future, though it's understood that there is a bit of projection with players whose careers were cut short by injury.

Absolutely no dropping of players: once drafted they are drafted, but players could be traded if team needs change. At the end of the draft a team could pick up an undrafted UFA and simply discard a draft pick.

The number of teams that make the playoffs will depend on the number that qualify for the postseason. To qualify, a team must meet this all-time draft roster condition: Have on the team at least ONE player from each of the following time periods:

1939 or earlier
1940-1965
1966-1979
1980-1989
1990-1999
in 2009 (ANY active/nonretired pro player with 200-plus games pro experience regardless of when he began his career)

The very first game ever played in a top pro league defines which time period for the required condition (so, an eighties player whose NHL or SEL rookie season started in 1979 would meet the 1966-79 time period requirement).

On another front, there will be an all-star team of 1LW, 1RW, 1C, 2D, 1G, 1Coach voted on after the regular season.

If a last minute team or two joins before midnight tonight they'll be placed accordingly, but it seems we can run with a Canadian division and a World division:

Atd-ML#10

Sir Montagu Allan division:

Regina Capitals
Melville Millionaires
Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds
Peterborough Petes
Newfoundland Fog Devils
Labatt Blues

Mickey Ion division:

Yaroslavl Manglers
Oxford Dark Blues
Adirondack Red Wings
Dayton Ohio Mincer Rays
Tidewater Sharks
New York Americans

If every team qualifies for the playoffs then, with 12 teams, a short 5-game opening round (48-hour discussion time) will pit the 3rd vs. 6th, 4th vs. 5th in each division, with two byes per division for the two top seeds. The playoffs will be swift and merciless. The draft and playoffs will be entirely completed before the last day of March, so help the hockey gods. So say us all.

In today's headlines...

I'd just like to wish everybody good luck in the MLD. You're going to need it, since raleh and I are back together for the MLD. The fans in Melville are rabid for a championship in the centennial year, and they want to see an MLD championship banner hanging from the rafters of The Vault.

Dare I say that the Mills have the biggest home ice advantage in the league? Having been in The Vault, I think we do.

A big welcome to Bruins72 and Kyle McMahon. Don't know much about Bruin72. I'm thrilled to have Kyle McMahon in this thing. It's been a long time coming. We have some excellent veteran GMs, too, so that should mean a quick, fluent draft that should be done in about three weeks.

As I've said before, I'm thrilled to have VanI back to run this thing. He runs a tight ship, but I think the MLD works best that way. It's a good way to do some things (all-star teams, team MVPs, doubled-up picks) that we wouldn't be able to do in the ATD. VanI's got a lot of good ideas for this format. And I'm glad that everybody will make the playoffs - if they play their cards right.

Not so fast, my friend ... clearly, you haven't been in The Cooler, home of your Labatt Blues. Ours are known Canada-wide as some of the most rabid, loud fans in the league. Once they get a few in 'em, they help make sure that nobody makes it out of London with pints ... I mean points.

With the 1st selection in the 10th Minor League Draft..the Labatt Blues select..

RW - Mickey Redmond (1968-1976)
MICKEY_REDMOND_DETROIT.bmp

Redmond got in on two Stanley Cup victories with the Canadiens before being traded to the Red Wings as part of a package to bring Frank Mahovlich over to Montreal in 1971. In Detroit, Redmond was slowed by injuries in the early going, but quickly bounced back to catch fire. In his second season with the club, he became the first Red Wings in team history to top the 50-goal mark in a single season. And to make sure it wasn't just a dream, he went out and netted another 51 goals the following year.

- Legends of Hockey

"The 5'11" 185lb Redmond was a strong skater, but not a clever puck-carrier. His strength was in his arms, not his body, and he couldn't barge over people. He had to be set up. But if a team got the puck to him, he had a low wrist shot that he got away with remarkable quickness and a slap shot which had the force and accuracy of a rifle."

- Bill Libby (Author)

"Redmond probably has as high a scoring potential as any young player in hockey. He shoots as hard as Bobby Hull and gets his shot off in a hurry. He's not big, but he's tremendously strong. His big season was no surprise to me."

- Gordie Howe

Redmond certainly had a great 3-year peak and the individual awards to show for it. And had one decent full season in Montreal, a cup and a bit part in another cup. Too bad injuries kept him from doing any more than that. A relatively short career marked by a great shot as a finisher.

The thing is, he plays right wing, by far the deepest position in this draft. And it's hard to see what he would have brought to the main draft, how he ought to have gone there, except as an extra forward for another injury-prone winger. he's not one of the guys who definitely should have gone in the main draft imo.

That said... because only injury appeared to stop him from all-time glory, his demonstrated skill and performance while healthy has to make him a top scoring threat in this draft! ... Labatt might be forming themselves one of the best first lines.

Yup. I wasn't prepared to go solo in this. But VanI is someone I've often felt I'd work well with. So now we'll find out.

Wow. The two GMs that have made the most aggressive trade ups in ATD history (Howe-Lemieux, and Beliveau-Bourque) working together? I feel like a good move for you guys would be to spend your first two picks on coaches Eddie Shore and Doug Harvey, then announce that they will be suiting up as player coaches, trading away all of your lower picks and surrounding the big two with the current roster of the Victoria Salmon Kings.

LMFAO.
Right wing [is] the deepest position in this draft.
I think that's highly debatable.

1002 points in 1169 NHL games makes him worthwhile to pick but man-oh-man I hadn't realized he has scored 72 points in 97 NHL playoff games: THAT's impressive.:amazed: (I hadn't watched the Oilers in the post-Messier nineties and I never watch the Blues in the postseason except the season they upset my Sharks, neither team able to score, Selanne doin' squat...)

Doug Weight might have been (and, in my opinion, WAS)the best player available, and one we would have given a long look at if he would still have been there at 11th.

However, things being what they are (mainly, playing in a rather deep position for this draft), I'm not sure he was the best PICK available.

hey hedberg... do you know why Joe Thornton is so much more valued in the ATDs than Doug Weight?

Neither one can score but each are wizards in the passing department.

I guess Joe's peak of one MVP season is the difference. And his size, though he's no prototypical power forward in my book, regardless of what some say.

*shrug*

oh wait... YOU drafted Joe in ATD10 ;)

Doug Weight is a guy I had hoped might be around in round 2 or 3, though once MXD joined in I gave up any hope of that.

Good thing I'm 9th, I have no list ready or anything.

For some reason I thought Dave Kerr made it through the main draft..

Redmond's probably the best goal scorer available. Too bad he ran into injury problems. One of hockey's biggest "what if" cases. Back-to-back 50-goal seasons, a 40-goal season, two all-star births = a guy who is a game-breaker at this level. Yeah, he played with Marcel Dionne, but Redmond can score.

Doug Weight's solid. He's good enough to play in the ATD. Underrated defensively and plays with a lot of heart, tenacity and fearlessness. Not a natural physical force, but not afraid to be involved physically. He was nearly a point-per-game in both the regular season and the playoffs in his eight years and five post-seasons in the playoffs, even though the Oilers weren't very good.
