  • He was an all-star at both the defense and center position
  • He led all defenseman in goals (8 times), points (5 times) and assists (3 times) during the 1950s.
  • He reached the double digits mark in goals scored 9 consecutive times (1950-58)
  • Frank Boucher called him the key component of the Detroit Red Wings dynasty of the 1950s.
  • He could log up to 50 minutes of ice time in key games.
  • He was unanimously voted in the 1st All-Star team in 1951, 1952 and 1953.
  • He won the Memorial Cup with the Toronto St. Michael's Majors in 1947.
  • In 1954, he won the first ever James Norris Memorial Trophy. However, prior to 1954, he was the only defenseman to receive Hart consideration in 1950 and was by far the defenseman with the most Hart consideration in 1951 (3rd; Bill Quackenbush 7th) and in 1953 (3rd, no defenseman in the top-5).
  • He was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1968, only one year after he retired.
  • #22 on The Hockey News' top 100 National Hockey League players of all-time.

Quotes:
  • ''Joe (Primeau) was Gentleman Joe and could really teach you. He taught me how to move from forward to defense and how to turn to take the guy coming down against you at thirty miles per hour when you're backing up at ten. You've got to turn and go with him. He showed me how to make that turn. I worked on it. He never shouted, never ranted and raved. He was very quiet.'' - Red Kelly
  • "The first number I was given when I went to the Red Wings was Number 20. I had that the first year; I was the fifth defenseman. The other defensemen had the low numbers - Black Jack Stewart, Bill Quackenbush, Leo Reise and Doug McCaig. The next year when I walked into the dressing room, they gave me a new sweater with Number 4. I said, 'Oh, I'm happy with 20. I don't know why I've been given this new one.' (Jack) Adams said, 'Twenty -- that's two numbers, that's too heavy. You only want one number.' That's how I ended up with a 4," - Red Kelly
  • "I had a temper. I had red hair," Kelly laughs. "I was the welterweight boxing champ at St. Mike's. I could take care of myself. Joe Primeau taught me you don't win games in the penalty box. You've got to stay on the ice. Players would try to get you off the ice sometimes but you're more valuable to a team when you're on the ice." - Red Kelly
  • "When I had the contract talk with Imlach, we talked most of the day and then it went until midnight before we agreed. Nothing was ever said about where I was going to play or anything until after I agreed to come to Toronto. Toronto was playing Montreal the next night. They had to fly my skates in from Detroit for that game. After I signed, I told Punch, 'I've been off skates for ten days or so. I'd hate to make a mistake out there and cause a goal,' and Punch said, 'Red, how would you feel about playing centre?' I said, 'Great! No problem.' I didn't care where I played as long as I was playing hockey. He said, 'If we're going to win the Stanley Cup, we 're going to have to go through Montreal. I need somebody to check Beliveau.' He said, 'How would you feel if I started you against Beliveau?' I just said, 'Fine. Great. Love it!'' - Red Kelly
  • "When I went to Toronto, after I agreed to everything with the contract, I was going out the room and (King) Clancy said, 'Red, how would you like to wear Number 4?' I said, 'That'd be great!' Well, he had asked my wife - I didn't know this - when Clancy was trying to reach me, he talked to her (Andra) and he asked her if there was anything he could do for her. She said, 'Yes. You could give my husband Number 4!'' - Red Kelly
  • ''Harold Ballard brought the Cup and a couple bottles of champagne and a photographer out to my house and they took a picture of my family around the Cup. I put Conn in the Cup and they took a picture. And the look on Conn's face - he did the whole load in the Cup! Our family always chuckles when they see guys drinking the champagne out of the Cup." - Red Kelly
  • ''I think the biggest mistake the Red Wings ever made was to trade Red Kelly. We won nothing without him. - Gordie Howe

  • "There are so many sacrifices that you have to go through to win a Stanley Cup. A lot of people say, the last game you played pretty well and you had to sacrifice, but it’s not just the last game or the last two games. It’s the whole season, and the whole career, and every morning waking up at 6:00 a.m. to practice when you’re seven or eight years old. Those are all sacrifices that are put in perspective when you win and make you realize it was worth it." - Guy Carbonneau
  • "Carbonneau is a very important player to his team, much more so than people imagine. It’s very frustrating to play against someone capable of neutralizing you like he does." - Raymond Bourque
  • Several times prior to the start of the current season, Canadiens General Manager Serge Savard was asked if he intended to acquire the talented center Gilbert Perreault from the Buffalo Sabres: "I can’t do that," replied Savard. "I can’t take the risk. What would happen if the Sabres wanted Guy Carbonneau in compensation and an arbiter agreed?" - Serge Savard (livingbeyondreality.com)
  • "Only Guy Carbonneau would shoot from where he was, and only Carbonneau could score from where he was. This guy can do stuff nobody else in the league would attempt." goaltender Doug Soetaert after the game where he saw Carbonneau scored the game tying goal against him
  • "If you put a forward against a defenseman, the latter has a good chance of coming out the winner. He can shut down the play, force a long pass. Usually my opponents have a joint strategy to contain me. But with Carbonneau, it’s always in the offensive zone that he bothers me. He’s always in my way. He’s brave too. He constantly throws himself in front of shots, and never gets seriously hurt. He’s a little crazy. [...] Each time I’m readying for a shot on goal, out of the corner of my eye I see him getting ready to fly, and most of the time the puck doesn’t reach the net. It’s getting to the point that I don’t want to take the shot, I know he’ll stop it. I’d sooner pass the puck to one of my teammates. [...] Even if Carbonneau is very proud of his defensive play, he’s also not bad on offense. We’d better not be caught sleeping in our zone if he has the puck. Anyone who doesn’t take him seriously will find him passing the puck between their legs and…there’s the goal. You have to watch him closely: he’s fast, has good hands, and—a rare quality these days—can let fly a wrist shot or backhand without advertising it. When someone has all these assets, we’re talking about a complete player." - Raymond Bourque
  • "He looked like he’d come out of a meat grinder after that last game. His face was swollen and covered with stitches, his body covered with bruises. When I watched him head for the shower, I said to myself he represents what the Canadiens have come to be known for: determination, courage and pride. Where would the Canadiens be without Carbonneau?" - Mario Tremblay
  • "Carbonneau is the top shot-blocking forward in the game today and perhaps of all time." - Raymond Bourque
  • "I’m happy not to face Carbonneau more than three times a season. Still, that’s three times too many. You have to be on the ice with him to know how forceful, effective and talented he really is. He gives his body and his soul to his team." - Wayne Gretzky
  • ''Carbonneau is one of the rare defensive players capable of controlling a hockey game.'' - Raymond Bourque

#7 BRYAN HEXTALL SR. (1913-1984)

nnjb2.png

1992 Legend of Hockey Card

5'10 feets, 183 pounds, shoots: left

Stanley Cup Champion (1940)
First All-Star Team Right Wing (1940, 1941, 1942)
Second All-Star Team Right Wing (1943)
Art Ross Trophy (1942)
Rocket Richard Trophy (1940, 1941)
Hockey Hall of Fame (1969)

Art Ross Trophy:
1939-40 *6th*
1940-41 *T-2nd* (-29.03%)
1941-42 *1st* (+3.57%)

Hart Trophy:
1940-41 *5th*

Notes:
  • Bryan Hextall sons Bryan Jr. and Dennis both played in the NHL.
  • He was considered as one of the fastest skater of the 1940's.
  • Hextall played "off wing" many years before the tactic was to become common practice in the league. He found that he had a better shooting angle, as a left-handed shot, by cutting in on goal from the right wing.
  • He scored perhaps the biggest goal in New York Rangers history on April 13, 1940, in overtime, in game six of the Stanley Cup finals. In Toronto that night, at the 2:07 mark of the fourth period, Hextall beat legendary goaltender Turk Broda to give New York a 3-2 victory in the game and a 4-2 series win to claim the Stanley Cup. (Hockeylegend.com)
  • He scored 20 goals in 7 consecutive seasons back in the days when 20 goals was a benchmark of a very good player.
  • Poor circulation in Hextall's legs forced doctors to amputate both legs below the knees in 1978.
  • It is obvious that Bryan Hextall was the dominant right winger of the era directly before the arrival of Rocket Richard and Gordie Howe.(Joe Pelletier)
  • Hextall was considered the dominant right winger of his day (Hockeylegend.com)

Quotes:
  • "He is a very clean-living individual and an excellent ambassador for professional hockey." - James Dunn
  • "He was the hardest bodychecking forward I had seen in more than forty years of watching hockey." - reporter Herb Goren
  • "I took a pass from Dutch Hiller and Phil Watson. The puck came out from behind the net and I took a backhand shot to put it past (Turk) Broda." - Bryan Hextall Sr. on how he scored his famous GWG in 1940.

Stanley Cup Champion (1953, 1956, 1957, 1958, 1962)
Stanley Cup Finalist (1951, 1952, 1954, 1955, 1959, 1960)
Second All-Star Team Left Wing (1953, 1956)
Hockey Hall of Fame (1985)

Art Ross Trophy:
1955-56 *4th*

Calder Trophy:
1949-50 *3rd*

Hart Trophy:
1950-51 *6th*
1959-60 *5th*

Notes:
  • Was nicknamed ''Dirty Bertie''
  • Olmstead was traded twice in a span of 17 days back in the 1950-51 season: from Chicago to Detroit and from Detroit to Montreal.
  • Back then, Olmstead set an NHL record for most assists in a season with 56 in 1955-1956. The same year, he tied the league record by scoring eight points in a single game.
  • After the 1957-58 season, the Montreal doctors told him he had no strength left in his knees and that's why the Montreal Canadiens left him unprotected in the Intra-League Draft; he was taken by the Toronto Maple Leafs.

Quotes:
  • "There had never been a better hockey player along the boards and in the corner than Bert Olmstead. In my opinion, he will go down in history as the most underrated player that ever played. He went to the Toronto Maple Leafs and won a Stanley Cup there, too. Bert never accepted a loss lightly. You could never get the puck off Bert Olmstead. He was long and lanky and once he got the puck you couldn't take it from him.'' - Jerry Toppazzini
  • "He's the best mucker in the league. By mucker I mean that he's the best man in the corners. He goes in there and digs the puck out for you." - Ken Reardon
  • "There wasn't enough room for both of us in the corner and somebody had to score the goals. I knew I could get the puck so I told Béliveau, 'Don't move from where I last saw you. It takes me three, four or five seconds to get the puck and it's going where I last saw you.' '' - Bert Olmstead
  • "I'm a hockey man through and through. I have a lot of love for the game and for what it means." - Bert Olmstead

#18 ED WESTFALL (1940-____)

hjkhjkxk2.png

1972-73 O-Pee-Chee

Stanley Cup Champion (1970, 1972)
Bill Masterton Trophy (1977)
Frank J. Selke Trophy (1969**, 1970**, 1972**)
Team Captain (1972-1977)

Notes:
  • He was nicknamed ''18'' by his teammate, because he wore that number all his career.
  • On October 7, 1972, Westfall scored the first goal in the New York Islanders franchise history, against the Atlanta Flames.
  • Westfall considered retiring instead of reporting to the Islanders, the new expansion team. He weighed an offer from the rival World Hockey Association. He spent a lot of time just feeling bitter toward the Bruins. Then he figured, what the heck. He'd make the best of it.
  • He starred in junior hockey as a defenseman and his early years with the Bruins were at that position.
  • In 1972-73, Ed Westfall became the first New York Islanders player to play in an All-Star game.
  • While a defensive specialist, Westfall did record 12 ten goal scoring season, while topping 25 goals twice in his career.

Quotes:
  • ''After you get through that initial stuff -- that private stuff that says you want to quit -- you start to think, well, you can't change it. Horses get traded, cows get sold. I'd seen this happen to my teammates before'' - Ed Westfall, on the fact he got traded by the Boston Bruins in 1972

Stanley Cup Finalist (1903, 1905, 1907, 1918)
Team Captain (____-____)
Hockey Hall of Fame (1960)

Notes:
  • Si Griffis was one of the fastest skaters in the early days of the game despite his relatively large frame.
  • His leadership was quiet, yet effective, as many of the young players on his team looked up to the classy veteran.
  • Griffis is a member of the Northwestern Ontario Sports Hall of Fame
  • It is said that the town of Kenora offered him a purse of gold and a house for his outstanding play, but Griffis politely turned down the gesture.
  • With a chance to again be reunited with old Kenora teammate Tommy Phillips, Griffis came out of retirement on January 5, 1912, playing the whole sixty minutes of the match and scoring three goals and adding two assists in an 8-3 drubbing of the New Westminster Royals.
  • He was a competitive golfer and bowler.
  • He served as managing director for the Vancouver Sun newspaper.
  • Two weeks after he was elected to the Hockey Hall of Fame, Si Griffis died in Vancouver.

Quotes:
  • ''He would have been an All-Star in any ERA.'' - Ultimate Hockey

Notes:
  • During all his career, it seemed nothing Drillon could do was enough as he was always compared to Conacher, a player he was always compared too.
  • After one year with the Montreal Canadiens, his NHL career would be cut short due to World War II.

Quotes:
  • "I don't think there's a player in hockey who can shoot the puck more accurately, even if you leave him an opening the size of the puck, he'll hit it every time." - Turk Broda

  • McGee established a reputation for being at his best in Stanley Cup matches.
  • McGee died, serving his country in the World War I, in 1916 in Courcelelle, France.

  • He's among the 12 inaugural Hall of Fame inductee in 1945.

Quotes:
  • ''It was McGee’s first appearance as a senior hockeyist and he showed that he was qualified to stay with the finest in the land and finish strong. Frank was at centre and he invariably got the better of the face off. He followed up fast and was always in the vicinity of the puck.†- The Ottawa Citizen, after McGee first senior hockey game
  • "He (McGee) was even better than they say he was. He had everything - speed, stickhandling, scoring ability and was a punishing checker. He was strongly built but beautifully proportioned and he had an almost animal rhythm." - Frank Patrick

a work in progress:

Donair City Loch Ness Monsters
Coach: Father David Bauer

Arena: Donair City Shizzle Civic Memorial Donaratorium

The Lineup
Goal

Glen Hall All time iron man won one cup, should have won many
Pete Peeters

Defence:
Dit Clapper 13 years captain of Bruins, 3 stanley cups, 7 time all star
Dave Langevin rock hard blueliner, 4 consecutive cups

Reijo Routsalainen 2 time cup winner who was good enough that80s
Oilers airlifted him in to help them win 2 of their five Don't let his brief
NHL career define his skill, because if you saw him, you know he was sick with talent
Paul Reinhart effective Canada cup member in 81, great puck mover

Wade Redden Good all round rearguard
Randy Gregg 2 time Olympian, 2 time canada cup, five Stanley Cups
B]LW Charlie Simmer[/B] scored 111 goals in 129 games over 2 seasons, on a good team he's got a chance to prove what a performer he can be
B]C Peter Stastny[/B] International legend second to only the truest elite of his generation
B]RW Glen Anderson[/B] Those who didn't actually witness the Oilers dynasty are quick to pass Anderson off as a passenger on that train. This man was as clutch as ever played, and would do whatever it took to win Fourth in playoff points. Six time cup winner

LW Mats Naslund With one stanley cup, this Olympic champion and Lady Byng winner was slick but no coward
C Mike Modano One of my real thorns as an Oilers fan, no one can refute the two way skills of this speedster, who has one cu/I]p to date
RW Real Cloutier This two time winner of WHA scoring title would absolutely light it up with these cats up front

LW Esa tikkanen A two way dynamo and four time cup winner ultimate pest, playoff clutch player
C Kent Nilsson Has enough offensive talent to go with one cup to make your head spin. With the talent on this team, will be motivated to new heights.
RW Ales Hemsky[/BPlenty of talent to play with the big boys, will his head follow?

LW Bob Probert An exceptionally capable player, who once potted 29 while spending 398 minutes in the box, he will drive fear into the wimpy little forwards of the opposition.
C Kevin McLelland Capable of scoring a timely goal, this four time cup winner fears absolutely no one and competes every time
RW Kelly Buchberger[/B A two time cup winner, BUcky is a consumate team player who scores rarely but big. Will take a beating for a team mate any time. All heart all the time

This team was built by specific role, so while someone like Routsalainen might seem out of left field, he has the exact skill set I wanted in his place. The fourth line can play a lot, or very little, dependant on the team we face. Against a smaller lineup, Briere will sub in for one of the bruisers. Against a tougher club, Buchberger stirs it up with Hemsky dropping back to the fourth line. This team is built to be relatively mean, and more than willing to get hostile with the skinny ghosts of yesteryear. It is also built on speed and puck movement, with the extremely quick Anderson ready to bust across your blueline and make your goalie look silly when the game is on the line. Simmer is around to score oodles of powerplay goals, and can drop back a few shifts against a quicker team.

MONTREAL WANDERERS...

Home Rink : Westmount Arena

Power play units:
PP1: Joe Malone - Newsy Lalonde (C) - Didier Pitre
Ernie ''Moose'' Johnson - Boom Boom Geoffrion (A)
PP2: Michel Goulet - Jean Ratelle - Harry Hyland
Albert Leduc - Eric Desjardins

Penalty killing units:
PK1: Ken Mosdell - Louis Berlinquette
Jean-Guy Talbot - Eric Desjardins
PK2: Vincent Damphousse - Frank Finnigan
Albert Leduc - Ernie Johnson

(Georges Mantha will see some PK time to ease off the load on Johnson and, to a lesser extent Leduc, here and there. Similarily, Lester Patrick will see some action on the PP instead of those two aforementionned guys as well. When Hy Buller is in the lineup, he'll play PP as well, likely in place of Leduc. Anyways, since Leduc will probably be our most penalized guy, both Mantha and Patrick will see time on the special teams)

The Lineup

Against smaller teams, Briere moves in place of McCLelland, or Probert if he's in rehab. Tikkanen and Cloutier switch places to form a shutdown line of Tikk, Modano and Naslund as required. In rougher traffic games, Buchberger takes the odd shift in favor of Cloutier. This team can play with four lines, or shorten the bench to three according to the skill level of the other team. If we feel like pounding your pasty ancient midgets, in comes Semenko in favor of Bucky and we'll intimidate you back to the twenties.
