A good preview for Detroit of what's to come against teams like Kansas City, Minnesota and especially Ottawa. There is some good toughness in this Donair City line-up, especially on the back end. There are some guys who are going to punish the Detroit forwards. But big edges in speed and creativity for Detroit. Clapper will be able to keep up with the speed guys on the Eagles, but the rest of the defence won't. They'll get their licks in, but not enough to stop Detroit.
Glenn Hall will have to steal games if Donair City is going to pull this one off.

The big mismatch in this series is on the blueline. Donair City has a bonafide #1 in Dit Clapper, but then their next best guys, Ruotsalainen, Redden, and Reinhart are all #5 guys. Langevin and Gregg I'd take as #7's or as #2's in the NLD. Nylund, I'm not sure I'd take him in the AAA draft.
Donair City's bottom-6 forwards are puzzling too. It's not a shutdown line by any stretch, and some shutdown lines could even be more talented than it is. I've never seen a 4th line in the ATD constructed as a pure goon line. Some will throw on a Probert or a Maloney or a Williams or a Ferguson, but I've never seem three all together.
Their strengths are in their starting goalie and their more than adequate first line. But Detroit has an even better first line, as well as a third line that can stop any scoring unit, as well as a top-10 goalie who should be at least 90% as good as Hall in the playoffs.

I think you underestimate the mobility of this defence, especially Reinhart and defitinitely Routsalainien. The speed and tenacity of facing my second line will give the Bentleys fits, with Tikkanen running and jawing at every turn. Running into Dave Langevin in the corner will be more than either Doug or Max bargained for at 148 and 155 pounds. Should Detroit find itself ahead in a game by a handy margin, the Bentleys can forget what Stastny or Nilsson look like as they will see only Probert, McClelland and Buchberger. Hextall rounds out a nice first line that lacks the mean spirit and size for playoff warfare.
I think Detroit's second line, while consisting of good players, lacks the offensive flair to match up with the Stastnys, Nilssons and Modanos. Bert Olmstead is a nice player, but never a playoff scoring threat. Cowley is another very skilled player, but his best years are framed by the time many good players were overseas. At 165 pounds, he's fodder for the bruisers on Donair's wings, and with 12 goals in 64 playoff games, can you count on him in the clutch? Drillon brings more size and better numbers (with a very small sample size) But is this lady byng winner built for the size and meanness that both the wingers and defence of Donair City can bring to the game?
Detroit's third line features Jack Walker, whose statistics are impressive except for his 13 points in 80 NHL games. It is hard to tell where he would fit in. Guy Carbonneau is one defensive ace who some feel built his reputation partially on being Bob Gainey's successor. With 38 playoff goals in 231 games, he provides reasonable offence for a defenisve specialist. With 72 markers in only 186 playoff games, Donair City's Esa Tikkanen can kill you with offence even while driving your top scorer nuts. Westfall brings longevity, and reasonable offence. Father Bauer feels he can match this line very, very effectively.
Detroit's fourth line features Patrick, who had two good offensive seasons, neither of which were followed by playoff glory. McGee, who lay his life down for his country, leaves a legacy of great success in hockey's infancy, four pre-nhl seasons. Goldsworthy forged a nice career in the expansion division post 67, but offers no cup experience in a spot where Donair City elects to use size, meanness and rigors of cup battles.

I think that Routsallainen is way, way underrated here, as is Langevin. Where they went in previous drafts is neither here not there. Routsalainen was damned near as slick as Paul Coffey, and I contend that had he chosen to have an NHL career as a full time job, would be favourably compared to Scott Niedermyer. Langevin was a leader on a blueline that won four straight cups, I think he gets way, way overlooked here.
I don't think Langevin can keep up with the Bentley's. I don't think he's fast enough, or smart enough. The Bentley's were incredible. Max Bentley is one of the finest offensive players ever. Look at the numbers he put up in the playoffs, going against guys like Black Jack Stewart and Butch Bouchard. He was incredible.
Well aware of what Routsalainen and Reinhart can do. Great offensive defencemen. Great mobility. I'm a big Reinhart fan; I think he'd be a top four defenceman in this thing if not for the back injuries that killed his career. Great in the playoffs. But a guy who can play against the Bentley's? No.
Biggest misconception in this draft is Cowley's accomplishments. Most players didn't leave the league until 1942-43. A lot stuck around until 1943-44. Prior to 1942, Cowley was a two-time first-team all-star (against some very good competition), an Art Ross champion and a two-time assists leader. I don't think people realize how impressive 14 points in 12 games in 1939 really was. Cowley definitely trumps Modano and Nilsson offensively.
And to top it all off, Detroit is led by one of the best offensive defencemen ever, Red Kelly, a guy who was scoring 50 points at a time when 30 was a magnificent achievement. I think Kelly's the best player in this series.
To beat this Detroit team, you need guys who have mobility, excellent smarts and toughness.
I have to say that Loch Ness has several players that I personally do not consider to be ATD caliber: Hemsky (I cannot see him playing on a 3rd line trying to shut down the greats of the game) Wade Redden (liability) Randy Gregg (If he didn't win those cups with the Oilers, his name would not even be discussed here) and Kelly Buchberger (He would be a good heart-and-soul guy for the minors, but not good enough for the ATD).

Falcons Win Big In Series Opener
Detroit came out firing in the first game of their quarterfinal with Donair City last night, and not even the last line of defense Glenn Hall was able to stop the Falcons from hammering their opponents 5-1. The Faclons scored three times in the first period alone and didn’t look back. Early on it would be Red Kelly starting things off with a howitzer from the point to put the Falcons up 1-0. Kelly would get in on the action later in the frame when he assisted on Max Benetley’s first goal of the series. Not to be outdone, brother Doug would score with less than a minute remaining to put a 3rd marker on the board for Detroit. Kelly would score again in the 2nd, and Gordie Drillion would cap of the Falcons scoring in the 3rd to give the Falcons a big 5-0 lead. Esa Tikannen would score late for Donair City to quash any shutout hopes.

Falcons Take 2-0 Series Lead
The Falcons faced a tougher game last night, but the result was the same, a win, and now a 2-0 lead in the best of seven series. A much more intense Donair City team showed up in Game Two, and even held an early first period lead when Peter Stastny scored his first of the playoffs on the powerplay. However, the Falcons would respond twice before the period was out, on two goals from Bill Cowley. The rest of the game, despite the best efforts of Donair City, was controlled largely by the Falcons. Excellent puck control and numerous scoring chances the rest of the way were for naught though as Glenn Hall stood on his head all night long keeping Donair City within striking distance the entire game. For Detroit, Frank Brimsek stood on his head when he had too, and kept the score at 2-1 Detroit. With less than 2 minutes remaining the Loch Ness Monsters pulled out all the stops and brought Hall to the bench. Soon after Cowley would intercept an errant pass and calmly fire the puck into the gaping cage to give him the hattrick and his team the victory.
Final: 3-1 Detroit

Falcons Push Donair City to the Brink
Not even the friendly confines of the Donairatorium could stop the Loch Ness Monsters from being pushed to the brink of elimination at the hands of the Detroit Falcons last night. A crazed crowd was silented quickly when Detroit scored less than 2 minutes into the game on a goal by Red Kelly. Kelly would tally his 2nd of the contest later in the frame, and Detroit was well on their way to another win. A Glenn Anderson goal at the midway point of the 2nd would get the crowd back on their feet, but only briefly. Doug Bentley would set up Max only a few minutes later, and Max would return the favour soon after and before the crowd could sit back down it was 4-1 Detroit. Detroit would score twice before the game was out making it 6-1 for the visitors. Mike Modano scored a late goal to give the Loch Ness Monsters a 2nd goal. Depsite the tilted score, Hall was excellent in goal once again, stopping 54 of 60 shots sent his way.

Mo Dizzle! Donair City Wins Game 4!
With their backs against the wall, the Loch Ness Monsters pulled out a 2-1 victory last night in Game 4 of their quarter final with the Detroit Falcons. Glenn Hall was sensational in goal, and the Monsters had their best game of the series in front of the hometown fans. Dit Clapper would put his team up 1-0 midway through the first on a shot that eluded Brimsek. The remainder of the game was largely all about the goaltenders as Brimsek and Hall made save after save until the midway point of the 3rd period when Guy Carboneau tipped in a Red Kelly point shot to tie the game up at one. But Donair City had some magic up their sleeve this night, and with Olmstead in the box with less than 5 minutes remaining, Routsalainen scored from the point to make it 2-1 Donair City. Hall would make 9 saves in the last four minutes alone to preserve the win for the home side

The hometown Falcons put their series to bed last night with a convincing 4-0 win over their Donair City rivals. Detroit would dominate this one from start to finish firing 55 shot at Glenn Hall who may have lost 10 pounds in sweat in this game alone. Max Bentley found the back of the net midway through the first to put Detroit up 1-0. Red Kelly would put yet another gaol to maintain his series scoring lead in the early stages of period 2 and it was 2-0 Detroit. Despite the heroics of Hall, the Falcons would score two more goals in the 3rd, one by Bill Cowley, the other by Gordie Drillon to round out the scoring and to secure the win in the game, and the series.
“This is only step one” said Roger Nielson after the game. “It’s great to be in a position to be moving onto the next round, but our focus is on winning that series now. I came into the room a few minutes after we had won, and the boys were already talking about Round Two”
“You have to tip your hat to the Falcons. They were phenomenal from start to finish in this series. Losing sucks, but gives you a good perspective on what you have to change going into next season” noted Stastny post game.
