The NEWFOUNDLAND and LABRADOR
DEPARTMENT of AGRICULTURE
ANGRY TURNIPS

turnip_zps7677d274.jpg

GM: Johnny Engine and Pesky Penguin 4

Coach: Viktor Tikhonov
Will implement an organized system that encourages finesse and puck control,
while instilling a rigid work ethic.

Assistant Coach: Pat Quinn
A players coach, on hand to help the team and their leaders communicate
and smooth over Tikhonov's authoritarian style.

Captain: Syl Apps
Alternate: Red Kelly
Alternate: Hooley Smith

Patrik Elias - Syl Apps - Vaclav Nedomansky
Apps thrived in real life with a big scorer from the slot on his right and a defensive conscience on his left.
Here, Nedomansky brings superior speed and grit, while Elias offers ADT-level skill.

Gordon Roberts - Bernie Federko - Hooley Smith
A shifty finesse centre between two tough wingers.
Hooley Smith brings two-way play and willingness to go to dirty areas, while Roberts is a finisher with a big shot.

Gilles Tremblay - Pavel Datsyuk - Ed Westfall
A checking line built on skating and intelligence. Datsyuk is among the best at forcing turnovers and making plays in transition,
while Tremblay is a capable finisher. Westfall brings extra defensive value as a shadow.

Ryan Walter - Jack Adams - Jack Marshall
A hard-working energy line. Adams can score dirty goals while playing agitating hockey and occasionally fighting.
Both wingers have a versatile, rounded game and should be able to get Adams the puck for bonus offense.

Serge Savard - Red Kelly
One of the top handful of puck-handling defensemen of all time,
with a big shutdown partner who will also bring smart puck play.

Randy Carlyle - Bob Goldham
Goldham is a responsible stay-at-home and excellent shot-blocker, but also an above average skater who can move the puck capably.
Carlyle is his offensive partner with some grit, and will be allowed to play his game.

Glen Wesley - Bert Corbeau
Corbeau is a big, physical offensive risk-taker who is best served
with a quiet, intelligent defensive partner like Wesley.

George Hainsworth
Conservative stand-up style goalie who will play the majority of the games.

Riley Hern
Athletic, intelligent backup.

Spares:
Buddy O'Connor
Smart finesse player who can step into the roles played by other centres on the team.

Miroslav Dvorak
Defensive defenseman who can play safe minutes when called upon.

Louis Berlinguette - LW
Adds depth on the wing for the bottom six

PP1:
Syl Apps - Vaclav Nedomansky
Bernie Federko - Gordon Roberts
Red Kelly
Apps down low and Nedomansky in front of the net. Federko making plays and using his wrister from the perimeter.
Roberts with a big wrong-wing shot. Kelly quarterbacking.

PP2:
Patrik Elias - Pavel Datsyuk - Hooley Smith
Bert Corbeau - Randy Carlyle
Smith in front of the net, Elias and Datsyuk up front, Corbeau and Carlyle on the points.

PK1:
Hooley Smith - Ed Westfall
Serge Savard - Bob Goldham
PK2:
Gilles Tremblay - Pavel Datsyuk
Glen Wesley - Red Kelly
PK3:
Patrik Elias - Jack Marshall

latest

past players include: Earl Seibert, Milt Schmidt, Bobby Bauer, Woody Dumart,
Claude Pronovost, Ott Heller, Babe Siebert, George Hainsworth & Howie Meeker

Kitchener Greenshirts
a defensively-responsible opportunistic-scoring squad
with championship-proven, captain-loaded, hardworkers

coaches Dr. Jan Starsi & Karel Gut

Busher Jackson - Frank Nighbor - Boris Mikhailov
FN's takeaway & pass to ES for rush or to fast BJ bull to net 'n backhand or to BM offwing inside shot and netcrasher
Herbie Lewis - Tommy Dunderdale - Odie Cleghorn
speedy passing & defending by HL, stickhandling speed & scoring by TD, rushing puckhandling scoring & physicality by OC
Jiri Holik (A) - Joe Nieuwendyk - Jack Darragh
skating two-way durability by JH, face-offs & stickhandling & responsible play by JN, speed & passing & clutch play by JD
Pud Glass - Cal Gardner - Jimmy Roberts
checking & relentless skilled effort by PG, aggressive checking & passing by CG, intense shadowing & checking & pking by JR
sub forwards: Dick Irvin, Yevgeny Babich

Earl Seibert - Art Coulter (C)
ES rushes & speeds, AC passes & fights; both check hard, move the puck, play a two-way game
Lionel Hitchman (A) - Red Dutton
shutdown D & puckhandling transition by LH, competitive fiery HHOF bodychecking by RD
Bucko McDonald - Flash Hollett
stay-at-home checking & shot blocking by BM, rushes up ice & shots by FH
7th dman: Dunc Munro

Turk Broda
workhorse starter was 1st or 2nd in NHL games played for 8 seasons
Jiri Kralik

Note: Gardner is a C/LW, Glass, F so the coach could ice a fourth line of Gardner-Irvin-Glass when desired (e.g., when not facing teams with Eddie Shore or Sprague Cleghorn types - which our division has - match-ups that are bankable to involve fighting; Roberts being a great defensive RW/D to sub on the blueline 3rd pairing, McDonald a legit top-4 dman sub option when Dutton or Coulter are in the box with Eddie Shore or Sprague Cleghorn).

PK1: Nighbor, Lewis, Seibert, Hitchman
PK2: Nieuwendyk, Roberts**, Coulter, McDonald
PP1: Nighbor*, Nieuwendyk, Mikhailov, Seibert, Hollett
PP2: Jackson, Dunderdale, Cleghorn, Coulter, Hitchman

* Nighbor was a LW as a star performer in a Stanley Cup championship so he could perform pp duty from there.
** When Irvin starts instead of Roberts, then Holik or Glass capably sub on the 2nd pk unit.

Chicago Shamrocks Real World Team History

In 1930, James Norris pursued the NHL for rights to a second NHL team in Chicago, but was spurned by the league who supported the NHL Chicago Black Hawks concerns regarding competition for fan base. He turned to the American Hockey Association who gave him rights to an expansion team in Chicago. The league had renamed itself the American Hockey League and declared itself a major league, to the anger of NHL president Frank Calder, who branded the league an outlaw league.

In 1931-32 season, their second, the Shamrocks won the league championship. Convinced they should be given a chance to play for the Stanley Cup, they petitioned the Cup trustees for that opportunity. However the trustees would have to convince the NHL to accept that challenge and the NHL would not. Perhaps frustrated by this, Norris once again looked to join the NHL.

In May 1932, the Detroit Falcons of the NHL declared bankruptcy, and Norris used that opportunity to convince the NHL he could take over the team. The NHL agreed on the condition that he disband the Shamrocks who were a thorn in the side of the Chicago Blackhawks. So he disbanded the Shamrocks and took three of the best players with him to Detroit, renaming the team the Red Wings. The American Hockey League reverted to the American Hockey Association after this and once again demoted itself to minor league status.
