1). The draft will last 25 rounds. You must draft 2 goalies, 6 defensemen, 12 forwards, a coach and 4 extra picks.

Now on a 10 hour clock.

2). The time windows will be tight but reasonable.
  • 12 hour clock for the first two rounds, (sending a shortlist to another GM highly encouraged here)
  • then 10 hour clock for rounds 3-6,
  • then 8 hour clock for rounds 7-14,
  • then 6 hour clock for rounds 15-20,
  • then 4 hour clock for rounds 21-25
One hour time window deduction for each skipped pick (two hour deduction for missing a 12 hour clock - leave a list), with a minimum 4 hour clock guaranteed regardless of deductions.

3). Trades - No trades!
  • Swapping your entire set of draft picks with another GM before either of you has made a single pick is allowed, however.
4). ADD/DROPS - At the conclusion of the draft, there will be a 7 day period for add/drops. All add/drops must be 1-for-1. Dropped players will NOT be eligible to be added by other teams.

5). At the conclusion of the draft, there will be a 10 day period for lineup assassinations. Assassinations will be divided by division.

6). Regular season rankings MUST BE VOTED ON by at least one GM (if the team is co-GM'd) per team. The penalty if not done is a potential lowering in the standings because each GM will rank his own team first. Co-GMs who both vote each get half a vote for the regular season rankings in their own division.

GMs who vote in every round of the playoffs will get preference of their draft positions in the following draft.

7). All Teams make the playoffs. The conferences will be divided into two divisions of 7 each, with the regular season divisional winner getting a 1st round bye in the playoffs. The first round of the playoffs will feature three intra-divisional matchups in each division, after which the remaining teams will compete in divisional semifinals (standard high vs. low seed) and divisional finals rounds. Winners of the divisions will meet in the conference finals, and winners of the conference will meet in the draft finals.

8). NO MENTIONING UNDRAFTED PLAYERS!!!

9). PM the next team after you have made your pick. THIS IS NOT OPTIONAL!

A few administrative bits:

- the draft will officially start in 48 hours - that is, at 03:00 Wednesday morning, Eastern Standard Time.

- teams at the top of the draft may begin selecting immediately (this means you're up, BC).

- Reds4Life: if you have posted a team name, I haven't seen it. Please PM me, and I will add your team name in the thread.

Thanks, and good luck everybody.

Oh, I don't believe we had a clear consensus on how to proceed with the playoffs at 28 teams, so this is what I'm going with for now:

All Teams make the playoffs. The conferences will be divided into two divisions of 7, with the winner of each division getting a 1st round bye in the playoffs. The first round of the playoffs will feature three intra-divisional matchups in each division, after which the remaining 8 teams in each conference will be re-seeded based on regular season record, and matched according to seed: 1 vs. 8, 2 vs. 7, etc.

If anyone has objections or suggestions with regards to playoff format, now is the time.

I'm actually curious about who BC is going to pick at 1st overall.

I'd love to buck the trend but the relative value of defensemen around here makes it a no-brainer unfortunately:

Bobby Orr

Bobby Orr
Too bad he only had 8-9 truly great seasons and 2-3 top-level playoffs. His 6-year peak is unbelieveable. If he had less injury problems he would not be "arguably" the greatest player ever but in fact undoubtably would have been. But, then again, I guess Gretz's prime was pretty otherworldly as well, with surprising career length effectiveness as a passer.

Yeah, even if you would discount his career length and put him 3rd all time, what he brings to a tream when healthy from the blueline is too valuable to pass up. Gretzky plays center, easily the DEEPEST position in this draft, bar none (er,... other than maybe coach).

That said, in the nearly ten years I've been doing ATDs on HfBoards, Orr has never won the ATD. Perhaps the 16th time is the charm?

There is a good chance you're right. If he had kept up playing even close to as well in his 30s he would have filled the trophy case.

The good news for me is that he didn't miss many games in seasons he did play. I usually tend to shy away from injury prone players that miss a bunch of games at random.

But, then again, I guess Gretz's prime was pretty otherworldly as well, with surprising career length effectiveness as a passer.

True and as always the best argument for Gretzky is that he did it. No what ifs or maybes.

Yup. He is the best one but there are more good ones out there.

I volunteer to right this wrong. ;)

Note: Even though the draft clock has not officially started GMs are still required to PM the next guy up after they pick

If for some reason you cannot send a PM please let everyone know with a post in the draft thread (this should not be a a regular thing but rather a special exception)

And: dropping two names and one pic is a bad precedent to set for level of info provided with each pick.

Update, pimp-up or at least make specific reference to bios.... to help raise rather than lower the bar set by those who have gone before ya! (though a young Gretz on a bike is news to me! and the sole highlight of the draft so far)

I am at work.

Though TBH bioing Gretzky (or Orr) kinda seems excessive/unnecessary.
Yeah, let's name drop the first two hundred names. (Don't bore us with details. We know every interesting aspect of their careers, aside from the bikes they rode).... TBH...

Bios are great, I agree, but by no means are they (or have they ever been) mandatory. I have no problems doing research and finding quotes during assassinations/playoffs, but sometimes, I'm on my phone and all I really have time to do is to drop a name.

I enjoy doing bios as well but dont think they should be mandatory. Stats and a pic should always be included with your pick but not a full out bio. Ill do a bio of my top 12 forwards top 6 defensemen 2 goalies and coach but not my bench guys. Also will volunteer my services now to any gm who wont be around and would like to leave a list. Im around most of the day and dont mind helping anyone out if theyre going to be gone. Anyway rearing to pick now. Pretty sure of who ill pick at #4.

I added the other rules we agreed to in the planning thread to the OP.

Sturm had added this line "GMs who vote in every round of the playoffs will get preference of their draft positions in the following draft." Go to the planning thread if you wish to discuss whether we are doing this again.

7). 8, 2 vs. 7, etc.

I just read this again - is this cross-divisional playoffs? DO NOT WANT. I thought that going back to divisional playoffs like we used to do was one of the first decisions we made.

Was it? My plan is not actually to have set cross-divisional playoffs, but simply re-seeding after the opening round, which doesn't automatically mean that teams will play cross-divisional opponents. I think this method is the best way to prevent some great teams from going out too early. Conference-wide seeding of eight teams also feels more natural to me, as that is the way the real NHL does it. But if the group decided that we want to go back to divisional playoffs, I'm fine with that, too.
