Biggest Steal(s) of the draft: Maltsev at 143, Cowley at 153, Stewart at 155, Vezina at 172, Schriner at 187. Great value from players who fell due to the insane runs on defensemen
Biggest Reach(es) of the draft: Cam Neely, Gary Roberts, and Wendel Clark go too early every draft. Andrew Ladd and Georges Laraque were just bad picks.
Smartest/best strategic pick in the draft: Reuniting real life lines and pairings is too easy. I'll say it was when Edmonton picked Camille Henry for their PP, addressing their biggest team weakness to that point.
Biggest blunder selection of the draft: Reds4Life selecting a total unknown as his backup when he has probably the weakest starter in the draft
A Player finally getting respect in the draft: Georges Vezina, it seems. One draft too late
A player always taken too high, finally getting picked where he should in the draft: Nice to see Yvan Cournoyer and Tim Kerr fall

I swear to god every other post in this is comparing bargain basement or poor #4's or whatever to someone on my team.

I don't think your team is bad at all despite what IMO were some questionable picks. And I don't know, maybe I have trouble objectively evaluating Rick Nash in an all-time sense, because I think he's been the most overrated player in the NHL for a long time. It's funny/sad seeing Wayne Cashman less than 70 spots after Nels Stewart!

Edit: You seem to agree that you took Corbeau too high. And Kelly Miller.... meh, I just don't see what makes him a special player. Good team penalty killing stats, but I don't think he got much individual recognition for it.

Well I admit I overrated Bert Corbeau based on his bio.

And Cashman was drafted specifically to be wingman to Stewart so he is higher than he should be otherwise too.

Nash was drafted for his fit and goalscoring bias..

I guess most of my "poor" picks are based on fit more than my overrating them, really.

Haha, the funny thing is it seems you pick him sooner & sooner every year! He's got throng of intangibles, but he's not Top-200 material IMO. I'm still unsure just how far he should fall, but outside the 100's would be a good start.

Biggest Reach(es) of the draft: Punch Broadbent [128] - this guy to Modo is like Gainey to Murphy, who used to pick old Bob in the 3rd round every year, in spite of the fact that no one else would have even thought about him for at least another hundred picks.
Smartest/best strategic pick in the draft: Not a pick, but I thought Raptor picking up Emile Francis was a very good move. The Cat is an underrated hockey mind around these parts.

Biggest blunder selection of the draft - Punch Imlach coaching the Big M.
A player always taken too high, finally getting picked where he should in the draft - Doug Jarvis - Pick 334. Went 265 last year. Doesn't seem too high for 964 consecutive games played. Tough for your opponent to play the injury card with Jarvis.
Most overrated player taken - Tie - Bad Joe Hall and Terrible Ted Green are not top 310 players. There were more skilled dmen available such as Leo Reise, Jr. and Frank Patrick who also create less PPs for the other team.
Most puzzling pairing of defensemen - Dave Burrows - Ted Green - Who's the puck mover?
A funny/dramatic story you've learned about since the start of the draft - Mark Howe admits Gordie was a dirty player. I like this, because Gordie is the dirtiest player I've ever seen. He used his stick as a weapon and didn't care how badly he cut or hurt the other player. I like him and don't judge him though, because when he entered the league in 46 that was the status quo.

Biggest blunder selection of the draft: Drafting Laraque.. I mean wtf?

Lol...the 25th round is pretty much always a gong show in the draft. We didn't even have a 25th round in the past and I think a lot of GMs just don't care that much about their 4th spare. I think Laraque might end up with more PIMS than TOI in the season, though as the team doesn't otherwise have a "true heavyweight", I do see the logic in having him around, and am not planning to drop him.

I don't think any 25th rounder can really be called a "blunder", though, simply because they are almost completely insignificant.

It would return some value to multi-positional spares, though that would further encourage GMs to list every spare drafted as an F/D like we had for a little while this year. I dunno, I find the 25th round entertaining in a certain spastic sense.

There are tons of heavyweights that can do a better job as both a hockey player and an enforcer than Laraque. For example, Overpass nabbed a much better player in the same round in Marty McSorley. Most of the picks in the 25th round might not have been great but most of them were atleast MLD level players, Laraque might be useful in the single-A draft.

McSorely at this level will most likely beat up laraque, outscore him and then play better defense than him.

and I dont like this argument that "hes a spare so it doesnt matter", no player is insignificant during a real NHL season so why would they be here. Real NHL teams that lacks depth usually dont do that well specially not if someone gets injured.
