I'm glad my little idea is now an ATD tradition :)

Biggest Steal(s) of the draft Sergei Makarov, Bobby Rowe
Biggest Reach(es) of the draft Scort Stevens, Punch Broadbent
Smartest/best strategic pick in the draft VanI picking Weiland & Aurie back-to-back to reunite them with Lewis
Biggest blunder selection of the draft Punch Imlach, when already having Frank Mahovlich on your team
A Player finally getting respect in the draft We talked alot about Neil Colville, hopefully he will come back in the top-300 like he used to be
A player always taken too high, finally getting picked where he should in the draft Kevin Stevens
A player you've discovered in this draft Bobby Gould
Most underrated player taken Vladimir Vikulov
Most overrated player taken Outside the usual suspect, I will throw Lanny McDonald, whom I never understand why he's always taken in the top-200 (at 216, first time I remember him outside 200)
Favorite scoring line of the draft Michel Goulet - Wayne Gretzky - Bernie Geoffrion. Everyone picked Jari Kurri over Bernard Geoffrion to play with Gretzky. For years, I wanted Geoffrion to play with Gretzky. Kudos!
Favorite checking line of the draft Bob Pulford - Ralph Backstrom - Claude Provost
Best assembled line of the draft Bert Olmstead - Jean Beliveau - Andy Bathgate
Worst assembled line of the draft Nick Metz - Evgeni Malkin - Boris Mayorov
Favorite pairing of defensemen Valeri Vasiliev -Guy Lapointe
Most puzzling pairing of defensemen Red Kelly - Ken Reardon
Team in the other conference it'd be interesting to meet in the finals PITTSBURGH BANKERS, it would be a very nice serie to watch
Team in the other conference you wouldn't want to meet in the finals Canadiens & Trail Smoke
A funny/dramatic story (related to the ATD) you've learned about since the start of the draft None come to mind, I'll edit later

Biggest Steal(s) of the draft - Bain outside of the top-500 is just wrong
Biggest Reach(es) of the draft - Lidstrom at 7th overall (Before Shore, Hull and a half dozen others? Really? Jagr, Hasek and Lafleur are greater, don't most of us think? The Lids love gone out of control)
Smartest/best strategic pick in the draft - Moog as Fuhr's backup
Biggest blunder selection of the draft - Oatman as a first liner?
A Player finally getting respect in the draft - Harris
A player always taken too high, finally getting picked where he should in the draft - Bobrov at 738th in the 24th round, extra skater (sounds about right)

Team in the other conference you wouldn't want to meet in the finals - Pittsburgh Bankers
A funny/dramatic story (related to the ATD) you've learned about since the start of the draft - Gerard beat up coach Ross (hospitalized him even) after the latter hit some other guy by mistake, as told in Conn Smythe's autobiography.

I'm glad my little idea is now an ATD tradition :)

Most puzzling pairing of defensemen Red Kelly - Ken Reardon

Don't worry about those two, Kelly will be paired with either Grant or Tsykangov and Reardon will anchor our 2nd pairing.

Biggest Steal(s) of the draft: Maltsev at 143, Cowley at 153, Stewart at 155, Vezina at 172, Schriner at 187. Great value from players who fell due to the insane runs on defensemen
Biggest Reach(es) of the draft: Cam Neely, Gary Roberts, and Wendel Clark go too early every draft. Andrew Ladd and Georges Laraque were just bad picks.
Smartest/best strategic pick in the draft: Reuniting real life lines and pairings is too easy. I'll say it was when Edmonton picked Camille Henry for their PP, addressing their biggest team weakness to that point.
Biggest blunder selection of the draft: Reds4Life selecting a total unknown as his backup when he has probably the weakest starter in the draft
A Player finally getting respect in the draft: Georges Vezina, it seems. One draft too late
A player always taken too high, finally getting picked where he should in the draft: Nice to see Yvan Cournoyer and Tim Kerr fall
A player you've discovered in this draft: Igor Liba, I had no idea who he was before a few months ago
Most underrated player taken: I don't know, probably one of the non-NHL Euros, maybe Sergei Kapustin?
Most overrated player taken: By constant draft position, it's Wendel Clark. By the comments of some other smart GMs, it's Tom Paton
Favorite scoring line of the draft: Busher Jackson - Frank Boucher - Boris Mikhailov
Favorite checking line of the draft: Bob Pulford - Ralph Backstrom - Claude Provost (surprised anyone picked anything different)
Best assembled line of the draft: Bobby Hull - Sergei Fedorov (A) - Theo Fleury
Worst assembled line of the draft: There are no real stinkers this time, well done guys. Scanning the rosters though, I really have no idea what Vic Hadfield is supposed to be doing next to Dave Keon and Ed Litzenberger
Favorite pairing of defensemen: Hod Stuart - Earl Seibert or Ray Bourque - Art Coulter
Most puzzling pairing of defensemen: Viacheslav Fetisov-Paul Reinhart
Team in the other conference it'd be interesting to meet in the finals: It could be fun to face Minnesota due to the complete contrast of style.
Team in the other conference you wouldn't want to meet in the finals: Dawson City, I really don't feel like dealing with Bobby Orr again.
A funny/dramatic story (related to the ATD) you've learned about since the start of the draft: Maybe it was a big story in Canada, but I honestly didn't know the Soviet authorities bribed international refs with vodka and prostitutes before games until I read the article on the Summit Series.

Best selection: You cannot vote for players you own
1st round: Maurice Richard at 13
2nd round: Henri Richard at 64
3rd round: Sergei Makarov at 71
4th round: Busher Jackson at 115 (seems like he's the end of a tier of LWs)
5th round: Maltsev at 143, Cowley at 153, Stewart at 155. The round of steals!
6th round: Georges Vezina at 172, Sweeney Schriner at 187
7th round: Allan Stanley at 195 (suck it, sturm), Art Ross at 213
8th round: Baldy Northcott at 252
9th round: Jack Crawford at 268, Gus Mortson at 277, Bullet Joe Simpson at 287
10th round: Danny Heatley at 298
11th round: George Hay at 338, Barry Beck at 348
12nd round: Svedberg at 355, Drillion at 361 (in a vacuum at least), Gottselig at 373
13th round: Jiri Holik at 413
14th round:
15th round: Hap Day (coach) at 470
16th round: Vladimir Vikulov at 486

19th round: Bobby Rowe at 585
20th round: Bob Davidson at 637

23th round: Paddy Moran at 729
24th round: Brian Campbell at 765
25th round: Slava Bykov at 800

'Worst' Selection
1st round: I'm not going to pile on Scott Stevens, so I'll say that while I understand wanting to start with a center, I would never pick Mikita over Hull or Richard

4th round: Punch Broadbent at 128
5th round: Vladimir Konstantionv at 149

17th round: Kelly Miller at 529
18th round:
19th round: Ian Turnbull at 583
20th round:
21st round: Tomas Holmstrom at 651 (worthless if you aren't using him on the PP)
22nd round: Marc Andre Fleury at 701
23th round: Kirk Maltby at 733
24th round: Andrew Ladd at 765
25th round: Georges Laraque at 777,

So basically a good chunk of my team? Sheesh.. glad I had at least one steal in there too.

I swear to god every other post in this is comparing bargain basement or poor #4's or whatever to someone on my team.

I really don't think my team is that bad at all.

I don't think your team is bad at all despite what IMO were some questionable picks. And I don't know, maybe I have trouble objectively evaluating Rick Nash in an all-time sense, because I think he's been the most overrated player in the NHL for a long time. It's funny/sad seeing Wayne Cashman less than 70 spots after Nels Stewart!

Edit: You seem to agree that you took Corbeau too high. And Kelly Miller.... meh, I just don't see what makes him a special player. Good team penalty killing stats, but I don't think he got much individual recognition for it.

Well I admit I overrated Bert Corbeau based on his bio.

And Cashman was drafted specifically to be wingman to Stewart so he is higher than he should be otherwise too.

Nash was drafted for his fit and goalscoring bias..

I guess most of my "poor" picks are based on fit more than my overrating them, really.

I gotta stop picking Broadbent so early, I realize this.

Haha, the funny thing is it seems you pick him sooner & sooner every year! He's got throng of intangibles, but he's not Top-200 material IMO. I'm still unsure just how far he should fall, but outside the 100's would be a good start.

Biggest Steal(s) of the draft: Alexander Maltsev [143], Sweeney Schriner [187]
Biggest Reach(es) of the draft: Punch Broadbent [128] - this guy to Modo is like Gainey to Murphy, who used to pick old Bob in the 3rd round every year, in spite of the fact that no one else would have even thought about him for at least another hundred picks.
Smartest/best strategic pick in the draft: Not a pick, but I thought Raptor picking up Emile Francis was a very good move. The Cat is an underrated hockey mind around these parts.
Biggest blunder selection of the draft: Imlach
A Player finally getting respect in the draft: Rod Brind'Amour
A player always taken too high, finally getting picked where he should in the draft: Steve Shutt
A player you've discovered in this draft: Red Sullivan - I already knew he existed, but had no idea what a good all-around player he was
Most underrated player taken: Vladimir Vikulov
Most overrated player taken Syl Apps Sr
Favorite scoring line of the draft Olmstead - Beliveau - Bathgate
Favorite checking line of the draft Pulford - Backstrom - Provost
Best assembled line of the draft Pavelich - Goyette - Dillon - I think this is a terribly underrated unit, and an excellent two-way 3rd line
Worst assembled line of the draft Metz - Malkin - Mayorov
Favorite pairing of defensemen Horton - Suchy
Most puzzling pairing of defensemen Carlyle - Weber
Team in the other conference it'd be interesting to meet in the finals Mystery - Tarasov's east-west vs. Gorman's north-south would be epic
Team in the other conference you wouldn't want to meet in the finals Pittsburgh AC
A funny/dramatic story (related to the ATD) you've learned about since the start of the draft Neil Colville and the other Rangers trolling Phil Watson.

Biggest Steal(s) of the draft: Cowley, Barry, Vezina, Schriner
Biggest Reach(es) of the draft: Lidstrom, Stevens, Neely, Broadbent
Smartest/best strategic pick in the draft: Would have to agree selecting Camille Henry as a PP specialist
Biggest blunder selection of the draft: Benny Woit, uncontested besides maybe Georges Laraque
A Player finally getting respect in the draft: Sweeney Schriner, who I hoped to had steal a couple picks later. VsX definitely improved his standing.

A player you've discovered in this draft: Bob Armstrong
Most underrated player taken: Percy LeSueur
Most overrated player taken: Balderis, IMO

Team in the other conference you wouldn't want to meet in the finals: Pittsburgh Athletic Club (strong contender) or Quebec Nordiques (shutdown physicality team)

Biggest Reach(es) of the draft - Stamkos, Karlsson
Biggest blunder selection of the draft - Punch Imlach coaching the Big M.
A player always taken too high, finally getting picked where he should in the draft - Doug Jarvis - Pick 334. Went 265 last year. Doesn't seem too high for 964 consecutive games played. Tough for your opponent to play the injury card with Jarvis.
Most overrated player taken - Tie - Bad Joe Hall and Terrible Ted Green are not top 310 players. There were more skilled dmen available such as Leo Reise, Jr. and Frank Patrick who also create less PPs for the other team.
Most puzzling pairing of defensemen - Dave Burrows - Ted Green - Who's the puck mover?
A funny/dramatic story you've learned about since the start of the draft - Mark Howe admits Gordie was a dirty player. I like this, because Gordie is the dirtiest player I've ever seen. He used his stick as a weapon and didn't care how badly he cut or hurt the other player. I like him and don't judge him though, because when he entered the league in 46 that was the status quo.

Lol...the 25th round is pretty much always a gong show in the draft. We didn't even have a 25th round in the past and I think a lot of GMs just don't care that much about their 4th spare. I think Laraque might end up with more PIMS than TOI in the season, though as the team doesn't otherwise have a "true heavyweight", I do see the logic in having him around, and am not planning to drop him.

I don't think any 25th rounder can really be called a "blunder", though, simply because they are almost completely insignificant.

The way the 25th round has gone since we added it... I certainly wouldn't mind getting rid of it next time. Then you don't have the awkwardness an odd number of rounds for a snake draft too.

It would return some value to multi-positional spares, though that would further encourage GMs to list every spare drafted as an F/D like we had for a little while this year. I dunno, I find the 25th round entertaining in a certain spastic sense.

There are tons of heavyweights that can do a better job as both a hockey player and an enforcer than Laraque. For example, Overpass nabbed a much better player in the same round in Marty McSorley. Most of the picks in the 25th round might not have been great but most of them were atleast MLD level players, Laraque might be useful in the single-A draft.

McSorely at this level will most likely beat up laraque, outscore him and then play better defense than him.

and I dont like this argument that "hes a spare so it doesnt matter", no player is insignificant during a real NHL season so why would they be here. Real NHL teams that lacks depth usually dont do that well specially not if someone gets injured.

Wow...you've got really strong feelings about Georges Laraque. I think you're just mad that you didn't get him:
