Guelph Platers
1986 Memorial Cup Champions

Home Rink: Guelph Memorial Gardens (1948)
GM: BraveCanadian

Coaches: Fred Shero, Bruce Boudreau
Captain: Ron Francis
Alternates: Rod Brind'Amour, Sprague Cleghorn

Rick Nash - Ron Francis - Jaromir Jagr
Wayne Cashman - Nels Stewart - Bill Mosienko
Rod Brind'Amour - Bernie Nicholls - Kevin Dineen
Gaetan Duchesne - Bobby Gould - Kelly Miller

Sprague Cleghorn - Harry Howell
Craig Ludwig - Dan Boyle
Charlie Huddy - Bert Corbeau

Jean-Sebastien Giguere

Reserves

Dion Phaneuf
John Ogrodnick

Powerplay:
PP1: Bernie Nicholls - Nels Stewart - Jaromir Jagr
Ron Francis - Dan Boyle

PP2: Rick Nash - Rod Brind'Amour - Bill Mosienko
Sprague Cleghorn - Bert Corbeau

Penalty Kill:
PK1: Rod Brind'Amour - Kelly Miller - Craig Ludwig - Harry Howell
PK2: Ron Francis - Bobby Gould - Sprague Cleghorn - Charlie Huddy

Forward Line Play:

Our first line features a top of the line two-way, playmaking center in Francis. His faceoff prowess along with Jagr and Nash's puck possession should mean that this line is going to have the puck an awful lot. Not to mention the size of this line is imposing even though they are not overly physical except in shielding the puck.

Our second line is constructed to maximize Nels Stewart. Cashman performed a similar role for Esposito that he will be called upon to revisit here. Mosienko gives the line speed and he is a balanced player, being able to make a play or give the line another trigger so that the opposition cannot focus exclusively on Stewart. The line will have the option of playing dump and chase with Cashman's boardplay and Mosienko's speed to run out loose pucks, or having our puck moving defensemen gain the zone and let Stewart setup shop to do what he does best.

The third line features Rod Brind'amour who is really a 2nd line talent in this thing both ways. I've decided to move him to the wing to allow us to move Nicholls up and take advantage of Brind'amour's offense some more. Brind'amour and Dineen give the line a ton of grit and determination, good and decent offense, and great and decent defense. Nicholls has the talent to make use of the pucks they will free up. And while not being great defensively he isn't a minus either. Brind'amour will take the draws.

Our new fourth line is a real life checking line that I have reconstructed here. Duchesne-Gould-Miller all have good Selke recognition and regularly went up against the Gretzky's/Bossy's/Hull's/Lemieux's in real life and had some success. They are all good penalty killers as well and will be doing that for us.

Defensive Play:

All our defensive pairings are constructed with a primary puck mover and a primary stay at home player. Sort of the cookie cutter approach but it is proven. This lets them work somewhat interchangeably with the forwards so that the forwards aren't adapting.

That being said, we're relying on our 1st pairing heavily to make up for our somewhat weaker 2nd and 3rd pairings. This is why Cleghorn isn't on our first PP or PK for example -- we are saving him for ES where he can have a bigger impact on our overall fortunes.

Protecting Close Lead

If we're protecting a close lead in the last couple minutes of the game, we'll shorten the bench:

Miller - Francis - Gould
Duchesne - Brind'amour - Dineen

Cleghorn - Howell
Ludwig - Huddy

Offensive Hero Lines

If we need a goal very late in the game (again taking advantage of our faceoff prowess):

Stewart - Francis - Jagr
Nicholls - Brind'amour - Mosienko

General Strategies:

- We are going to roll three lines for the most part and use our fourth as a checking line.

- One of Francis or Brind'amour will take all of our important draws no matter which zone. If need be (late in a game and behind), Brind'amour will play on the second line to do so with more offensive oriented players. Francis/Brind'amour will sub on lines for the draw and then come to the bench. We will start with the puck most of the time.

- Jagr will be double shifted at times with Brind'amour / Nicholls' line (in Dineen's spot) to shake off his checkers and to take advantage of our center depth. We will take advantage of one of the greatest even strength scorers in NHL history.

Chicago Shamrocks Real World Team History

In 1930, James Norris pursued the NHL for rights to a second NHL team in Chicago, but was spurned by the league who supported the NHL Chicago Black Hawks concerns regarding competition for fan base. He turned to the American Hockey Association who gave him rights to an expansion team in Chicago. The league had renamed itself the American Hockey League and declared itself a major league, to the anger of NHL president Frank Calder, who branded the league an outlaw league.

In 1931-32 season, their second, the Shamrocks won the league championship. Convinced they should be given a chance to play for the Stanley Cup, they petitioned the Cup trustees for that opportunity. However the trustees would have to convince the NHL to accept that challenge and the NHL would not. Perhaps frustrated by this, Norris once again looked to join the NHL.

In May 1932, the Detroit Falcons of the NHL declared bankruptcy, and Norris used that opportunity to convince the NHL he could take over the team. The NHL agreed on the condition that he disband the Shamrocks who were a thorn in the side for the Chicago Blackhawks. So he disbanded the Shamrocks and took three of the best players with him to Detroit, renaming the team the Red Wings. The American Hockey League reverted to the American Hockey Association after this and once again demoted itself to minor league status.

VIKING MANIACS

Coach: Jacques Demers
Captain: Bob Gainey
Ass. captains:
Viacheslav Fetisov
Guy Carbonneau

Our top three lines is generally gonna play equally much, the fourth is for just for relief 5-on-5. A little less playing time means higher tempo to do what they do best but if the opposition has one defined first unit they can expect that our third will play 20 minutes plus against them, partly on the PK obviously.

Brendan Shanahan - Max Bentley - Dany Heatley
Bentley will drive the puck with shanny creating some space not the least in front of the net. Prime Heatley can snipe it on a pass or drop.
Daniel Sedin - Vladimir Petrov - Bobby Schmautz(Almost PPG player during prime, little PP and 1st line duty. Also carves people up Old Time Hockey-style which we want against checking lines. Fights everybody although being medium sized in the seventies.)
Sedin and Petrov can keep the puck like the twins does, with any of them sniping or slapping. Schmautz certainly has a slapper of his own and can relentlessly push and shove.
Bob Gainey - Guy Carbonneau - Claude Lemieux
Always ready to play no matter how much an opponents top line do.
Simon Gagne - Bengt-Ã…ke Gustafsson - Andy Hebenton
A line that can play in all zones when in for relief.

Slava Fetisov - Ulf Samuelsson
Had to surrender for the idea to put Samuelsson here. These two can together play solid defense and wont be pleasant to meet there, perhaps even loose a knee when trying.
Gary Suter - Ken Morrow
Suter has an impressive offensive game and are at least tenacious on defense when it's not exactly certain no-one might loose control over their spine, while Morrow covers for his further shortcomings. Perhaps the latters total lack of offense explains the few AS-votes he got. Anyway, he used to cover for Denis Potvin and are in todays metrics probably 6'6" and strong like a bear.
Paul Reinhart - James Patrick
These are two sometimes underrated defensive players who certainly can start the play on the counter attack. They're mainly PP-guys though only in for relief 5-on-5, and on those occations will be tried to be pitched against opponents lower lines.

Glenn Hall
Will play any game until the stretch when he gets a little rest now and then to prepare for the playoffs. Hall is used to see a lot of bubber and we sure have the defensemen to start the counter attack.
Vladimir Dzurilla
We feel this is a guy that wont moan too much when not playing, but always be ready for his chance to shine.

Spares:
Alexei Gusarov goes in if we loose a PK:er.
Jeff Brown goes in if we loose any of our PP defenders.
Tiger Williams goes in on the fourth line if we smell trouble or got a debt to collect.
Marcel Bonin is a great player to put on the fourth if anyone there gets injured, or he or probably Hebenton can move up if a top liner gets injured. We got flexibility there becouse Heatley can go to LW.

Power Play:

Petrov(RHS) - Shanahan(RHS) - Bentley
Patrick(RHS) - Fetisov

We certainly feel the defenders, Petrov and Bentley sure can keep the pressure here. Petrov has the opportunity to either play off a pass from Patrick or slap it from the same or Bentley. Bentley can take a pass from almost everywhere here really, shoot or zig-zag his way into position in the slot here while Shanahan covers the goalie. We also have good setups for Fetisov in store.

Sedin - Lemieux(RHS) - Heatley
Reinhart - Suter

I believe the two defensemen together with Sedin can have the puck on a string here. Prime Heatley will always be looking for the one-timer with the help of Lemieux who gets to show his full tenacity in the slot and in front of the goalie which we feel he can do allright.

Penalty Kill:

Carbonneau - Gainey
Fetisov - Samuelsson

Gagne - Gustafsson
Morrow - Patrick

Gagne, although not normally a full time PK:er, gets the nod here besides a very qualifed Gustafsson. Perhaps they are able to do a breakaway as well. Morrow wont let anyone have their way in front of the goalie.
