ATD 2012 !!!

Now on an 8 hour clock

1). The draft will last 25 rounds. You must draft 2 goalies, 6 defensemen, 12 forwards, a coach and 4 extra picks.

2). The time windows will be tight but reasonable.

• 12 hour clock for the first two rounds, (sending a shortlist to another GM highly encouraged here)
• then 10 hour clock for rounds 3-6,
• then 8 hour clock for rounds 7-14,
• then 6 hour clock for rounds 15-20,
• then 4 hour clock for rounds 21-25

One hour time window deduction for each skipped pick (two hour deduction for missing a 12 hour clock - leave a list), with a minimum 4 hour clock guaranteed regardless of deductions.

3). Trading is to be reasonably fair and balanced and lopsided trades will need to be re-worked or dropped. This is at the discretion of the trade committee.

• Trading while on the clock is discouraged and will be penalized like a missed deadline, so if you do it, you better be sure that's what you want.
• There is no limit to the number of trades you can make.

4). Regular season rankings MUST BE VOTED ON by at least one GM (if the team is co-GM'd) per team. The penalty if not done is a lowering in the standings because we would also be ranking our own teams in our own divisions (e.g., most teams will rank their own team 1st in their own division; if a team doesn't vote they loose out on a 1st place vote opportunity and hence their team's ranking will be lower than it could have been). All teams make the playoffs. 4th & 5th seeds play a 2-game series to narrow the field to 32.

5). REGULAR SEASON AND PLAYOFF VOTING TO BE A SET RESPONSIBILITY.

6). NO MENTIONING UNDRAFTED PLAYERS!!!

He was a guy that didn't really buy into the communist system of coaching. He would often showboat on the ice. That said, he was an incredibly skilled hockey player, you just need a coach that will allow him to run wild. That said, I'm not sure he's a very good defender. Ask EB for more details about him, he has a copy of Kings of the Ice. Also, here is a short bio I put together for him in the Leafscentral MLD.

I'll look into him (Balderis) if I can find the time I still have a couple of bios to do also , but yeah I drafted him to make sure I had another offensive RWer after Hextall Sr.He'll play on the Nighbor line as long as there isn't a spectacular LWer in front of him that need to be stopped at all cost , in this case Provost will just take it from there like my original plan.I think he's fine with Denneny-Nighbor , he brings tremendous speed and good all around offense to support them , and he doesn't need to concentrate that much on his defense.

The only issue I'd have is that Balderis is, in all respects, most likely bad defensively. He definitely seems like a less physical Bure to me. He is a genius offensively, though. I'm not sure if I'd put him on a line with Denneny, either. Denneny seemed to me a guy that really worked well on rushes based on my research, and while he had a great shot, I think he relied a lot on players getting him the puck. Balderis won't pass the puck. Balderis needs to be the best player on his line, I think.

EDIT: Alright, it's wrong to say he won't pass the puck, as he has multiple top-10 assists finishes in the russian league, but he's certainly biased towards goal scoring, and I don't think that he would work well in combination with Denneny.

I disagree, I found NOTHING in my research to suggest Denneny was a slow skater. That is likely a myth, started by Ultimate Hockey, that seemed to stick with almost everyone, and was probably perpetuated by Denneny's size. He was definitely overweight, and overweight people tend to be slow skaters. That said, there was nothing to show that he was, in fact, slow, and the fact that newspapers were so quick to say that a guy like Keats was slow as **** demonstrates that they weren't shy about saying it like it was.

I know that you were likely only half serious with this, but it's a little disappointing that this myth still exists in any form at all.

Well like I explained in my previous post, my line-up will always change depending who I'm facing.But he'll sometimes play with Denneny-Nighbor.It'll be fine depending who is the LWer on the other side , he'll be able to capitalize on weak skaters bringing some more offense to the line.He doesn't need to be good defensively , I have plenty of defensive power in my forward group if I need it.He brings even more versatility to my forwards , I have players of all kind up there.

Of the remaining available defensemen, I basically see a bunch of guys with one great season, and maybe a few other decent seasons besides that, and a European that's a question mark. This guy is the only guy that really sticks out to me, so he's my pick, a 2x 2nd team All Star, and he was selected to the All Star game by merit twice, which is basically two more seasons as a top 10 defenseman, D Leo Reise Jr.

The bio seventies made certainly justifies a 24 pick jump for this guy. I'll do some looking around to see if there is anything he missed, but I highly doubt I'll find anything.

Alright to play with Keith Tkachuk on my 2nd/3rd line, I'm taking another physical, tough, American C. This line will be a ***** to play against because of its physicality and scoring ability. Tkachuk actually had his best goal scoring season with this guy, and also had some pretty kind words to say about him in this article: blackhawks.nhl.com/club/news.htm?id=610987

Jeremy’s secret weapon was his versatility: he could score, he could set up a play and he could even fight. You were always aware when he was on the ice. And he gave it everything he had every shift.

When the Jets moved from Winnipeg and became the Coyotes, we added Jeremy to the team, and it turned out to be great for both of us. It was a great partnership – everybody thought he and I might clash a little bit personally, but we became even better friends. I learned a lot from him. I mean, who wouldn’t want to play with Jeremy Roenick?

Friends or not – and he and I were really good friends from the time I entered the league – it didn’t matter. He would run you through the boards. You always had to be on your toes when Jeremy was on the ice there.

Agreed. In a 40 team league I'd be proud to take him in the 9th round as my 2nd C. I was going to take him at pick #320, but I needed wingers and there's been a real run on them so supply and demand really dictated my pick.

Makes for a decent #2 C in a 40 team league. I like the direction that team is going with JR as their 3rd, though - sets up a fiery third scoring line that can play it two-way (they will have to make a careful selection for 3rd line RW though).

I will help you out a bit, since Balderis is a player who interests me very much (I have a thing for Golden Age European players). Based on what I have found, I think Triffy's analysis in that post was most likely right on. Balderis seems to have been a player who would hold the puck and try to carry a line when on weak Riga teams or when his line was built to feed him, but he also seems to have been capable of sharing the puck when placed on strong lines, and was at any rate not a selfish player. Unfortunately, most google archves info on Balderis is locked up under pay-per-view pages, but as I have a NYT subscription, I can help out a bit. The below is all the relevant text from all the NYT articles I could find on Balderis (that really contained anything meaningful). I haven't left anything out that I know of.

Here is a snippet from a New York Times article I found on the 1979 Soviet National team when they played the Islanders in NY.

This is mostly praise of the team and the Soviet passing system, but Balderis seems to have fit into that system (on a line with Makarov? This supports Triffy's assumption that they, in fact, played together at CSKA) well.

NYT - May 13, 1978:

The Soviet team had it much easier. After leading 2-0, in the first period, it broke the game open with fve goals in the second.

The first of these was by Helmut Balderis, who brought the puck up ice, passed to xxxxx, took a return pass just to the right of the goalie and put the puck away easily. The play had the economy and grace of poetry. The Swedes were so dazzled that their defense did little else but stand around and watch as Balderis scored two more goals in the romp.

Sounds like Balderis liked to use his linemates on the rush. Doesn't sound like a Bure/Kovalchuk type to me.

Leading Soviet scorers in the series were Vladimir Petrov, with six goals and five assists in six games; Alexander Yakushev, seven goals, one assist in seven games, and Helmut Balderis, four goals, four assists in seven games.

Everyone who has seen the team is impressed by its latest star, Helmut Balderis, who is hardly in the mold of the typically conforming player the squad usually boasts. For one thing, Balderis sports a moustache, the first of the current crop to do so. Before a recent game, when all the players were lined up for the national anthem, he stood out boldly: his socks were colored differently from everyone else's. He is also a Latvian, and it is said that he is quick to make a distinction if someone refers to him as a Russian.

But it is his performance that fans at the Garden will note most.

"He's got a lot of moves," said xxxxx. "He makes believe he's losing the puck, the defensemen comes up on him and gets too close, and then he controls the puck and pushes it between your legs."

A one-man give and go.

"Can he ever motor!" xxxxx said in admiration. "Oh, gee is he fast!"

Balderis plays the "off wing", that is, he is a left-handed shot playing the right side. He is the goal scorer. His center is the rangy, playmaking xxxxx, and his left wing is xxxxxx, a digger in the corners. Together, they are a classic combination, and they form the top Soviet line.

The first player to appear in uniform was Helmut Balderis, the huge 26 year-old right wing with a moustache the Volga boatmen would have cherished. "He is something," said a Canadian familiar with the Soviet team. "Over there, he is known as Elekritchka - The Electric Train."

Helmut Balderis is from Riga, a Baltic sea port in Latvia, where he was discovered by the Soviet coach, xxxxxx, and brought back to play for the Moscow Dynamo team. Of the Soviet players, he is the one to watch, the one that the NHL all-stars must contain. Some hockey people consider him the equal of Guy Lafleur, the Montreal Canadiens' elegant right wing. Among the Soviet players he is unusual in that he is the only one listed as a technologist. Most are listed as students, a few as teachers, and one is listed as a crane operator.

"He's also listed at 5-10 and 189 pounds," an onlooker mentioned later. "He looks twice that big to me."

He opened the scoring in the second period, after a spectacular opening 20 minutes that was probably the most fun to watch of any period in the series. It's not a comprehensive look at this player, but from the text, we get a picture of Balderis as more Lafleur than Bure in style, and he seems to have been a huge star for a little while there. The Electric Train is a pretty cool nickname, as well.

Garnish selects a player who appeared in 4 all star games (2 as an actual all star and not as a member of the defending Cup champs, and a guy who was known as a tremendous defensive defenseman and won the Cup 5 times with the Montreal Canadiens.
