Currently on a 8 hour clock


1). The draft will last 25 rounds. You must draft 2 goalies, 6 defensemen, 12 forwards, a coach and 4 extra picks.

2). The time windows will be tight but reasonable.

12 hour clock for the first two rounds, (shortlists PM'd to me highly encouraged here)
then 8 hour clock for rounds 3-8,
then 6 hour clock for rounds 9-18,
then 4 hour clock for rounds 19-25

One hour time window deduction for each skipped pick with a minimum 1 hour clock guaranteed regardless of deductions.

3). Trading is to be reasonably fair and balanced and lopsided trades will need to be re-worked or dropped. This is at the discretion of the trade committee. To keep the draft flowing smoothly we ask that you do not trade while on the clock. We realize that this is easy to circumvent so be courteous. Circumventing this rule will be penalized like a missed deadline so if you do it, you better be sure that's what you want.

4). Regular season rankings MUST BE VOTED ON by at least one GM (if the team is co-GM'd) per team. The penalty if not done is a lowering in the standings because we would also be ranking our own teams in our own divisions (e.g., most teams will rank their own team 1st in their own division; if a team doesn't vote they loose out on a 1st place vote opportunity and hence their team's ranking will be lower than it could have been). All teams make the playoffs. 4th & 5th seeds play a 2-game series to narrow the field to 32.

5). REGULAR SEASON AND PLAYOFF VOTING TO BE A SET RESPONSIBILITY.

6). NO MENTIONING UNDRAFTED PLAYERS!!!

Watching Gonchar play, the first thing you notice is his powerful wrist shot. Often you don't even see the puck flying through the air; you only spot it when it's already in the net. He didn't have such a powerful shot playing back in Russia. Gonchar transferred smoothly to the North American style of hockey. In a way, he was lucky that his first season was during the 1994 NHL lockout. Gonchar had a two-way contract with the Capitals, so he was able to spend the lockout months with Portland of the AHL, the Capitals' farm team. He perfected his English and started learning the North American playing style.

New Capitals coach Ron Wilson has had an influence on Gonchar's career. Within six months they had gotten to know each other better, and Wilson soon considered Gonchar indispensable to the team. Gonchar's trip to Nagano, Japan, with the Russian Olympic team helped raise his profile. In Nagano he performed well, and back in Washington his star began to shine.

In the 1998-99 season, Gonchar became the first Russian defenseman to score over 20 goals in regular-season play. Gonchar his regarded as one of the most offensive defenceman in the NHL and proved it yet again in 2001-02 when he scored 26 goals and finished with a career high 59 points.

The smooth skating defenceman saw the defensive aspect of his game improve in 2002-03, while establishing career highs in assists and points. In 2003-04, Gonchar and the Caps struggled and piece by piece high profile members of the team were traded away. Jaromir Jagr went to the New York Rangers, Peter Bondra to the Ottawa Senators, Robert Lang to the Detroit Red Wings and Sergei Gonchar found a new home with the Boston Bruins.

Upon his arrival in Boston, Gonchar continued to produce offensively and once the regular season ended he was the league leader amongst defenseman with 58 points (11-47-58) before being acquired by the Pittsburgh Penguins during the summer of 2005.

On the international stage, Gonchar has gone on to represent his homeland at the World Junior Championship (1993), the World Championship (2000), the World Cup of Hockey (1996-2004) and the Winter Olympics (2002, 2006).

Despite injuring his knee in the Eastern Conference semi-final, Gonchar would return to the Penguins lineup to help them win the franchise's third Stanley Cup title in June of 2009.

After 13 seasons as one of the best offensive threats from the blue line, Penguins defenseman Sergei Gonchar still can't get any respect around the National Hockey League.

I know some people are weary of him because of the Kurt Cobain effect. But from what I can gather, statistically, Vezina and Benedict were close enough that the gap there is, just shouldn't be there.

Gonchar wasn't always good in his own end. He gradually improved as time went on, but even now I don't think he's really all that good enough to make a huge impact. In the ATD, he's a fairly below average guy defensively. He is, however, an exceptional puck mover, one of the better PP guys and great in the playoffs.

I think Gonchar is a good pick at this point. He is not good defensively, but his ability to run PP is really great. He has been one of the best PP quaterbacks in the world for quite some time. If you pair him with a great defensive partner, he can easily play on the second pair.

Norris Trophy, especially in previous, has largely been more of an offensive award. One certainly hasn't had to been particularly good defensively to do well in the award voting.

The TOI is good. I think people suggest putting him on the 3rd pairing largely so you can let Gonchar do the thing he does best (the PP), but I don't see why he can't be on the second pairing in a forty-teamer. First pairing is more...eh.

I have no idea why he always gets drafted behind Adam Foote.

When Hatcher and Zubov both played together in Dallas, there was little doubt that Hatcher was the better defenseman and bigger impact player. After Hatcher left Dallas, he injured his knee and his career basically went in the toilet, while Zubov continued to improve, however.

Georges Vezina is also a great pick at this point.

I assume Sergei Gonchar is the guy nik jr was talking about when he mentioned a contemporary of Zubov who was clearly worse, but has a better Norris record. And I agree. A minority of Norris voters view the Norris trophy as an Art Ross race for defensemen, and Gonchar always ranked highly for these voters.

You guys really suck. Derian Hatcher and Martin St. Louis were at the top of my list for defenseman and forward.

He's still a top 3 (at least) RW over a 7-season stretch. Why is the gap so huge between him and Iginla, to be honest? Probably because he's 5'7''.

Damn you for taking Bernie Federko He is one of the guys I have ahead of Mike Modano.

The offensive gap isn't nearly large enough to make up for the fact that Federko was an offense-only player.

It's not true. Gonchar is the worst defensive defenseman in the ATD drafted so far, in my opinion. The guy was an absolute sieve in his own zone in all but a couple of years in Pittsburgh.

Excellent guy to get for the PP at this stage, however.

Agree - don't pair him with Langway. Langway needs to be used to shut down your opponent's top lines, not as Gonchar's babysitter at even strength.

The majority of GMs here saw most or all of Gonchar's career, and you really can't pull a fast one on us with his Norris record. We all know that there is a minority of writers who view the Norris as an Art Ross trophy for defensemen.

I believe that there were years that Gonchar was 5th on Washington in non-PP minutes and he got Norris votes? Are you kidding me?

I was not aware of how high his TOI is in recent years, however.

True enough on Iginla. Not entirely sure but that would require me to look at more top lines; but I think often times we see top lines rely on one guy to be the designated "puck winner", and I think Francis is pretty solid in that sense.
