I give Ristolainen a niner

But really of these 5 in terms of pairing, which is what I think you mean...

Ristolainen 1/2
Scandella - 2
McCabe - 2
Bogosian - 2/3
Beaulieu - 3

Ristolainen 2
Scandella 3
McCabe 4
Bogosian 4/5
Beaulieu 4/5
Antipin ? (I think he ends up as a 4)

As compared to going into last year:
Ristolainen 2
Kulikov 3/4
McCabe 4/5
Bogosian 4/5
Franson 6/7
Gorges 7

Scandella is an upgrade on Kulikov (maybe only slightly overall, but if Scandella continues to play as he has, it'll be miles ahead of what Kulikov did here last year).

McCabe & Ristolainen should be improved.

Bogosian is Bogosian.

Beaulieu is I believe a major improvement over Franson.

And I believe Antipin will be a major addition over Gorges.

Overall I'd say just in those terms, they've gone from one of the worst 5 defensive groups, to something towards the middle of the pack.

as of right now
Risto 2
McCabe 3
Scandella 3
Bogosian 4
NB 5
Antipin 6
Gorges 8

I think under the system we havent seen you we could see McCabe, Bogosian, and Risto take a solid move forward. We will also find out if NB can become a top 4 guy or not.

Antipin - Unknown

Risto - #1 Defenseman. He might not be the BEST #1 defenseman, but he's a guy that can play all situations, and CAN play against the best of the best talent. Spreadsheet watchers may not say so because "look at statistics", but actually watching the game, he can play against these guys. I think people are down on him because of the Dark Hole of the Bylsma years

Scandella - #2 Defenseman, but can and should anchor our 2nd pairing. Much like Risto, he has the ability in all situations as well, and that's why I think he can play on a 1st pairing, but I'm not comfortable just with him being THE guy.

McCabe - #3-#4 Defenseman depending on the night. He has the skillset to play on the PP and the PK, but he's a guy I don't want playing top talent often(sometimes you can't control who he's matched up against). Unfortunately, his inconsistent play makes me weary to feel comfortable anchoring a pairing.

Bogosian - #4-#5 defenseman, again depending on the night. You can pretty much cut and paste everything about McCabe. I think under Housley, you're going to see a much needed rebound season.

Beaulieu - #4-#5 defenseman. He has some nice tools, but he hasn't used them well over the years in Montreal. Consistency will be key. I think under Housley, he can reach a higher level of play.

Antipin - Unknown for me. I will peg him as a #5 defenseman at this point. I'm looking at his skillset and its a toss up. He could surprise a lot of us and be a #3 level of player, or he can be limited in his abilities and be a 3rd pairing guy.

Gorges - #3-#4 AHL defenseman. guy is just toast.

I like this system.

Hopefully Antipin is more of a 5B instead of a 6B.
