In the 9/27/14 Herald, Chiarelli says:

Pastrnak still out

Top pick David Pastrnak, who suffered a bruised shoulder in practice last week, is not with the team.

But general manager Peter Chiarelli expressed optimism the 18-year-old will play one or more of the final three preseason games this coming week.

“I think he’ll play games next week,†said Chiarelli. “It’s going to be hard for him (to make the team). He’s made a good impression. This has been a little disappointing. It’s a little bit of a setback for him. I know there was a lot of hype around him making the team. I’ve been trying to temper expectations, really because of his size and age. I don’t know if it was a longshot (for him to stay), but I wasn’t expecting it.â€

I guess this is in contrast with what he said about a week ago ... about Pastrnak's possibility of making the team, about playing on Krejci's line, etc ...

Looks like Pastrnak's ticketed for Sweden, unless he does something great.

Other players of his size has done well in the NHL. For example, Steve Sullivan (165 lbs) did pretty well in the NHL.

Take your time with Pastrnak, there's no rush to bring him into the NHL. Let him develop more experiences and get more confident with his game.

he hasn't turned on him. He said he would start *camp* on Krejci's wing (which he did) and that he had a shot at making the team, but wanted to temper expections (same thing he's saying now). Being injured and missing half of camp definitely impacts his ability to make the team which is all Chia is saying here.

As they say in the NFL, you can't make the team from the trainer's table.

THis isn't CHia turning on him, but simply a statement of fact. Pastranak's chances of making the team were tied to him coming to camp and playing so well that Boston had no choice but to keep him.

Now he hasn't played at all, and that chance has passed

So much for dem Samsonovian vibes of mine...

But let's be reality.. he had a limited chance of making the team even before he got hurt. No knock on him, he's a teenager that isn't even fully grown yet. He'll be a good player in due time. Has some nice skill and a great disposition/attitude.

I'll be happy if he develops at Hamilton's rate... Go back and dominate Sweden for another year and make the team next year.

"Turns on Pastrnak?"

Come on already.

Kid got hurt and hasn't been able to play or skate with the team much....is it really a shock with so little to evaluate that the chances of him making the team went down with that?

I'd be more concerned if Chiarelli artificially inflated his chances of making the team without a proper evaluation period.

Who's in charge of this henhouse and is there a red "nuclear option" phone nearby, as it feels like we're at DEFCON 1 around here.

Concern? Yes. I didn't see last night game but I know there's concerns as well as some brights spots.....but let's keep the pitchforks stashed until we look at what comes out closer to final cuts.

Good god, Chiarelli turning on his first round draft pick. Something new each day around here.

I don't think "turn on him" is accurate.

But I do think this:
"I know there was a lot of hype around him making the team. I’ve been trying to temper expectations..."
is a load of horse crap.

He was pumping Pastrnak up as having the potential to make the team and where he might fit... and now he says "I've been trying to temper expectations." BS. I think WBC8 is bang on (even if he was being sarcastic) with the distraction assertion. Unrest in the fanbase, so here's something to get excited about. Aaaaand ****ed.

It's a shame. I thought he had a legit shot, and that was before PC or the media said one word about him. It wasn't about the cap or holdouts or anything other than his skill set and his compete level.

That said, when I was at practice the other day, watching the players go through breakouts and regroups and zone coverages, I couldn't help but think how far behind he must be now. Pastrnak hasn't been a part of any of those repetitions. While the players that have been at camp know them cold. They could probably skate those patterns with their eyes closed now, and the players with the puck can probably pass the puck to 'space' knowing which lanes are going to be filled. There's a pattern you skate when the D away from you has the puck, and one you skate when the D near you has the puck. There are times when you swing with crossovers and build speed and a time when you use an inside-reverse-pivot to stay low, facing the puck. They are using a stretch guy on certain plays, who goes out to the far blue line, crosses it and then comes back towards the Dzone so he's moving in the opposite direction of everyone else... There's a lot to learn, a lot to take in, practice and perfect. And Pastrnak has missed most of it.

There's still a chance, but I think he'd have to absolutely dazzle in the two pre-season games for them to decide it's worth taking away regular season practice time to teach him the things everyone else has spent the last two weeks learning.

I know it could have been anyone that could have hit him. And this may very well be a good indication that he is not ready to make the jump.... But still. DAMMIT BARTKOWSKI! Even just the full camp experience I'm sure would have been great for his development.. But nooo. :shakehead

All Bartkowski did was poke check the puck. He caught an edge and fell on his own. There was no "hit".
