Awww, this thread has been open for hours, and no one's posted in it yet.

So... Subban, eh? $9mil. Nothing against Subban, dude's a good player, but hopefully the Habs choke on that cap hit.

Nothing personal, just divisional rivalries.

I still think it's an overpayment and going to screw up the salary 'chart' for future signings, basically they created an instant inflation on an RFA contract. Teams are supposed to have the leverage in that point - for arbitration, if awarded would it have even taken him to UFA?

I think he still would have been an RFA next season.

Players have 100% of the leverage.

Players have 2 choices, get paid what they want by their current team or get payed what they want by another team.

Teams have 2 choices, pay them or lose them.

Ridiculous contracts and lockouts will keep happening as long as this is true.

RFAs don't necessarily have that choice, at least if they want to stay in the NHL.
That's where the leverage is supposed to come in and why they have to go to arbitration.

Basically what Montreal did is screw up the RFA payscale much like Penners offer sheet destroyed the 'second contract' for RFAs.

Seems like every RFA wins the dispute.

Subban should send Matt Cooke a rolex. If he never sliced Kalrsson's tendon, Subban would never have won the Norris and he would be getting a contract closer to 6M.

Him and the Montreal reporters who conspired to win him the award. It was a farce. Suter obviously should have won. He averaged 4 minutes more per game while Subban was sheltered. (35th in average ice time for D ffs) Despite playing in a tougher and lower scoring conference, Suter only had 6 less points. Subban shouldn't have one if logic was every applied, but it wasn't, they fixed that vote and we're sure to put Suter at 5, 4 or off their lists. Montreal typical. They don't like things to be fair.

Doesn't Montreal have the most voters for the Norris?

Either way, that relationship is ruined. Thing will never be the same between him, management, and the fans.

I suspect we'll see PK in a different uniform within 2 years (basically before the no-movement clause kicks in).

Arbitration usually damages the relationship between player and GM, but Subban got what he wanted.

It had to be done.

That's the thing, it didn't!
Habs went into arb wanting a 1 year deal, Subban went in wanting a 1 year deal. The arb was only going to award a 1 year deal. Then Montreal caved and gave subban a ridiculous contract. Why not give him that before if you were just going to cave anyways? Why strain the relationship?

Ya thats what I meant.

IMO it's not a ridiculous contract. Montreal had no way to avoid this type of contract.

At most Subban would have had a one year deal between 5 and 8 million... And still be an RFA when done with it.

Maybe they wanted to avoid a second round of this but signing max length for the highest amount a defenseman has received in terms of aav... That's just silly.

Montreal would have been susceptible to an offer sheet if he was awarded a 1 year deal.

That probably wouldn't have been such a bad thing given the contract he got. At worst he signs a similar contract with another team and the Habs get 4 first rounders. Better situation is PK continues to prove that he isn't a Norris calibre D and he signs a more reasonable contract. The habs pretty much got the worst of all sides here. Piss off the fans and player while completely crumbling in negotiations. Everyone loses in this scenario besides Subban. The league is really who's going to suffer. This is a first step towards another lockout. We couldn't save the owners from themselves.

How many teams actually have all four first round picks and the budget and cap space to offer?

It would have been next off season anyway, and by then he'd have proven what he's actually worth.

And they'd still have the opportunity to match whatever deal was offered regardless... Which likely would not have been any worse than the one provided this season.

People seriously overinflate the scariness of an offer sheet.

The real danger would have been PK signing his qualifying offer, would would have been a 1-year deal taking him to UFA.
