Looks like we haven't had had an Armchair GM thread in a while - last one appears to have been closed on April 17. I'm a fan of having a single place to throw around rumors, trade ideas, etc., so I thought I'd bring it back.

To kick things off:

We were almost certainly going to ship him out at the deadline, so this isn't too surprising. Hoping for a 3rd back at least.

Hopefully Fabbro can play all the time now, maybe pairings like this once Carrier is back:

Josi - Fabbro
McDonagh - Carrier
Stastney - Schenn
Lauzon

(Previous Armchair GM Threads: I, II, III, IV, (V))

Barrie has been pretty meh defensively and his 5v5 offense hasnt been great either. Depending on if theyre willing to retain or take back an equal value contract his value is probably between a 3rd and 6th.

His strength is running the PP, but I think we're married to Josi there. Which means he's not all that great of a fit on this team.

I wonder if he requested a trade. I could see where he might not be overly thrilled with his role, but I've no idea.

lets package him and cody glass for a 4th round pick

with that said i dont hate barrie as much as the “intellegentsia” and “thought police “ on here
Dont really hate him. Just dont see a huge market for him. Not great defensively. Large caphit. Best served as a PP specialist gettinf 4-6 D minutes.

Not alot of teams that can handle his caphit. The ones that can likely arent buying what he is selling (ANA, BUF, CHI). Most contenders have a better powerplay then us so Im not sure theyd be looking at us for a way to boost their powerplay plus most teams implement a 4F 1D setup so he likely ends up on 2nd PP anyways.

Usually if the player/agent is given permission to look around, it is the team saying "we have tried and there isnt anything we are willing to do"

He must have requested a trade. As an impending UFA looking for a nice new payday, he is going to need more of a point producing and PP-QB role than he is getting here. So he must be realizing that he's not going to get it, and wants out sooner than the TDL to start building his resume. Fair enough. You don't get to the point of being granted permission to seek your own trade without going through the steps of a) requesting a trade + b) your GM not being able to find one.

Which of course probably tanks his trade value. Oh well. Maybe even at best we were thinking of a 2nd if he got big points (he hasn't been) or a 3rd or less otherwise. If it was going to be a 3rd or less, then that's not appreciably different than "nothing". I imagine if they waived him today, there'd be no takers. Maybe closer to the deadline we can retain on him and at least give him away. His type of player definitely needs a specific lineup niche to fit into, and is not usually a popular playoff target. But anyway, even if we lose him for nothing, this is a lot better than the fear heading into this season that they might end up liking him enough to extend him! I'll take the "nothing" as a win, therefore. :thumbu:

Barries conundrum is what happens in a lot of these cases. If he was playing better, we'd want to keep him, and hed probably want to stay. Since he's not playing well, nobody is gonna want him at 4.5M. I suspect we can't give him away right now

Toronto sort of makes sense but they previously decided they didn't like Barrie and let him walk. Different GM but the coach is the same so I can't see them going back to him especially since even at 50% retained that is a significant chunk of the minimal LTIR cap space they have left.

I really don't mind Barrie as a player but he's a niche guy that needs a very specific situation to be successful. We can't give him that opportunity and there aren't a lot of other teams out there that can either. Couple that with his cap hit and it is tricky to see a move for him that makes sense. Honestly, I wouldn't be surprised if he went unclaimed even if we waived him.

Glass is struggling and Fabbro seems to be constantly in the doghouse.

That said.... we got tons of cap room and nothing better going on unless we want to rush prospects that arent ready. So if the return isnt worth it then pass. We still need a RHD with top pairing potential and a C prospect with top line potential. Neither get that return but that is what i think we need most... so Ostlund, Savoie, kulich, wahlberg type area is what id want. Probably not what i get but buffalo seems to have an excess of center prospects

I hope we don't need to be armchair GMing after tonight... but as some of the other threads are kind of venturing into that territory, maybe it is time to bump this thread, so as not to pollute those other ones?

Here's a post I made a couple months ago plotting out a potential lineup for next season... some things have already changed... but the bottom line is we will have something like $10M we could spend in Free Agency, even after you tweak/update some of the old data below...

2024-25 Nashville Predators

Forsberg ($8.5M) - O'Reilly ($4.5M) - Nyquist ($3.185M)
L'Heureux ($0.8633M) - Novak ($3.5M) - Evangelista ($0.7975M)
Parssinen (RFA - $0.775M) - Glass ($2.5M) - Tomasino (RFA - $0.775M)
Afanseyev (RFA - $0.775M) - Sissons ($2.857M) - Smith ($1M)
McCarron ($0.900M)

Josi ($9.059M) - Fabbro (RFA - $3.5M)
McDonagh ($6.75M) - Carrier (UFA - $3.5M)
Stastney (RFA - $0.775M) - Lauzon ($2M)
Del Gaizo (RFA - $0.775M) - Schenn ($2.75M)

Saros ($5M)
Askarov ($0.925M)

Ekholm retention: $0.250M
Johansen retention: $4M
Turris Buyout: $2M
Duchene Buyout: $5.5556M

TOTAL: $77.7674M
2024-25 NHL Cap: $87-88M
REMAINING CAP SPACE: ~$10M

What is next year's team looking like? For me, there are some obvious choices:

Walk:

Beauvillier
Carrier
Sherwood
Barrie

Re-sign:

Zucker
Lankinen

Trade:

Saros -> 10th OA

Head into next year:

Forsberg - O'Reilly - Evangelista
Zucker - Parssinen - Nyquist
L'Heureux - Sissons - UFA
Smith - Novak - Afanasyev
McCarron

Still not great but at least inject some youth in there and see what happens. We now know what happens with Sherwood and company and it ain't much.

Josi - Pesce/X
McDonagh - Fabbro
Statsney - Schenn/Lauzon
Schenn/Lauzon

Molendyk has an outside shot of making the team but given how Trotz has talked about over-cooking the prospects, I have a hard time seeing it, though.

Lankinen
Askarov

Bold choice to go here but I think it's time to make this move. Lankinen's at least an 1B option and Askarov could hold his own as the back-up. I think we've seen where this Saros express takes us and it's not to the Cup.

I will not be surprised if some of the players who just signed new contracts will be shopped and possibly part of package deals. Trading guys that are signed to lower contracts is standard operating procedure.

I just can't get past the idea that these playoff collapses, not unlike some earlier games during the regular season, are going to leave a foul taste in Trotz's mouth. A taste he's going to take some actions about. Given his DNA, a strongly defensive minded coach, just makes it that much more likely. Still, there is no track record here, so it is all wild guessing.

I thought Schenn would bring more effort he is older , and slower I know, Sometimes he just looks to me not invested. Thats just my opinion not based on facts.
