Tampa Bay has been called a few select phrases over the years including one of the best turf courses in all America and now comes this tidbit. One thing: Tampa Bay usually runs two days mid-year June 30 and July 1 though the article mentions only the former date. Anyway...

Tampa Meet Extension in Pipeline

A plan is in the works to extend the race meet at Tampa Bay Downs beyond its scheduled May 3 closing, but a track official deferred comment on specifics while the request is pending at the state level.

The Tampa overnight for the Apr. 24 races (drawn on Apr. 19), led with the notice “Attention Horsemen: We are seriously considering extending the meet,” but no additional details were disclosed.

When reached via phone on Tuesday, Peter Berube, Tampa’s vice president and general manager, said, “I’m really not going to comment until I get the approval back from the state, and I anticipate getting that sometime this week.”

TDN could not reach a representative from the Tampa Horsemen’s Benevolent and Protective Association for comment. That organization’s on-track office is keeping limited hours as a pandemic precaution.

There are currently four other Thoroughbred tracks running spectator-free meets in America. Gulfstream Park is scheduled to run through Sep. 27. Oaklawn Park closes May 2 and has indicated its meet will not be extended. Fonner Park races through Apr. 29, but a 12-date extension is on the agenda for Wednesday’s Nebraska Racing Commission meeting. Will Rogers Downs is currently racing through May 20.

Tampa’s contiguous winter/spring meet traditionally closes in early May, although the schedule annually contains one quirk–a standalone single-day program, this year scheduled for June 30–that is related to a fiscal technicality at the state level. That lone date allows Tampa to be classified as a live racing facility for the entire year, which enables the track to import simulcasts year-round without having to take them through another permit-holder in the state of Florida.

UPDATE: TAMPA BAY HAS APPLIED FOR EXTENDED RACING DATES

That's near the exit I used to live off of. It's two (NOT a typo) counties away from Turfway probably about 20 miles or so. It's closer to Belterra Park and the downtown Cincy casino than TP.

Pretty obvious why they chose that location instead of actually by the horse track...or even in the same freakin' county.
I watched the meetings today. I didn't hear Keeneland mentioned as much as the other tracks but that of course was because September racing dates were a primary discussion.

The tracks are working together in the Commonwealth. From an outsider's perspective, it looks as if Kentucky Downs and Ellis Park have a strong bond.

Keeneland wants to add summer racing dates. I suppose that is during the Ellis Park dates. Thus, even with the meeting today. Kentucky racing dates appear to be written in pencil though September is finalized.

Unless I missed something, this appears to be the current calendar for the five tracks:
  • Turfway: Jan. 1 - Mar. 28 closed a few days earlier than expected.
  • Keeneland: Canceled its entire meet from Apr. 2 - Apr. 24.
  • Churchill Downs: The spring meet was to be held Apr. 25 - Jun. 27 but opening day has been postponed to a yet unspecified date though May 7 is possible. Stables will open April 28.
  • Ellis Park: Jun. 28 - Sep.16 (expected to run on Sept. 7 and 16 along with Ky. Downs)
  • Keeneland: Looking into summer dates.
  • Churchill Downs: Sep. 1, 2, 3, 4, 5
    • Kentucky Oaks,Sep. 4
    • Kentucky Derby, Sep. 5
  • Kentucky Downs: Sep. 7, 9-10, 12-13, and 16 [was Sept. 2, 7, 9, 10, 12-13]
  • Churchill Downs: Sep. 17 - 27
  • Keeneland: Oct. 2 - 24
  • Churchill Downs: Oct. 25 - Nov. 29
  • Keeneland: Nov. 6 - 7 [Breeders' Cup host]
  • Turfway: Dec. 2 - 31

I wonder if Los Alamitos will be getting the Cali horses sitting idle, i.e. the good ones?

My initial feeling is no but that could depend on what happens with the two major tracks in the state. The Stronach Group has requested to reopen both of their properties -- Santa Anita and Golden Gate -- and supposedly that will be determined shortly. I would assume some jocks from both tracks will head to Los Al just to keep in shape and be active.

One side matter, the fair at Pleasanton, which is near San Francisco (Golden Gate) has offered to have its mid-June-to-mid-July meet postponed until October; however, that is when Golden Gate is also scheduled to runs. Stronach and the fair tracks had a major conflict over simulcast issues two years ago and the two sides aren't always in agreement.

With updates from Kentucky, California and Nebraska, this is the latest running tab. Situations have changed frequently and while there may be data not represented below, it was at one point accurate. Attempts are made to update in proper fashion.

  • California
    • Los Alamitos for QH night racing through December 20. TB racing will be conducted for twelve days from June 28 through July 14.
  • Florida
    • Gulfstream is currently in its spring/summer meet. Gulfstream usually races year-round until a brief autumn meet at nearby Gulfstream Park West (formerly Calder). GPW will be held probably in late September until around Thanksgiving based on the final year of the contract between Stronach (owner of Gulfstream) and Churchill Downs (owner of Calder).
    • Tampa Bay runs through May 30 after receiving an extension. It is dark until near Thanksgiving as scheduled but runs on June 30 and July 1 for fiscal reasons.

MARYLAND: It is going to be interesting to see how the state and city have their interests placated should the Preakness not be held at Pimlico. And if the date changes to September to coincide with the revamped Kentucky Derby and the Triple Crown as norm, then the annual spring meet at Pimlico will have to switch to September from what I gather. Timonium is popular with families but would that meet be canceled without spectators? Or will people be allowed to gather by then?! And Laurel is Laurel, always ready to race.

For those waiting to see what is happening with Maryland racing and especially the Preakness Stakes, this quotes sums it up best from earlier today:

Keefe, an accomplished triathlete as well as a multiple stakes-winning Thoroughbred trainer, also serves as president of the Maryland Thoroughbred Horsemen's Association. As such, he has been part of the ongoing conversations with state government, including Gov. Larry Hogan, Secretary of Labor Tiffany Robinson and Secretary of Commerce Kelly Schulz about the return of live racing.

“I guess in my mind, and it's nothing that I know or don't know, it's just kind of what I'm seeing on the news and reading about and seeing what's going on in our state and our country and the world,” Keefe said. “I'm hopeful that we'll be running back here May 1st. I'm thinking to myself it's going to be the middle of May, but the reality is it could be the first part of June, too.

The shouts of disgust were numerous. Now we have an article pertaining to the matter.

What I said last week...

With so few tracks operating, could we please clean up this one issue! We are appreciative to all who run and sacrifice but please don't overlap. TVG made a comment about Gulf and Oak working side-by-side so not to overlap during the Apple Blossom yesterday but there are only three tracks operating. These days should be less obfusgated than the usual weekend.

No name-calling here. Just a desire to express the obvious.

With Just Two Tracks Running, Post Times Still Collide

TVG, whose signal has been picked up by NBC Sports during a time in which racing has garnered increased exposure due to the COVID-19 pandemic, was forced to show one race live and the other on tape delay. Those who bet both races and were watching through an ADW were forced to try to watch both at one. Those who cashed a winning wager on either race did not then have the opportunity to put those funds directly back into the pools on another race, say, five or 10 minutes later.

“Equibase has a schedule which everyone sends in their post times for,” Gulfstream’s Vice President of racing Mike Lakow said Wednesday. “Our post time for that race was supposed to be 6:03, and we sent that out four, five, six days prior. Oaklawn’s post time was 5:45… We went off at 6:06–we were three minutes late–they went off at 6:06 and they were 21 minutes late.”

Lakow noted that Gulfstream, which is known for implementing post-time drag, provides its actual expected off times to Equibase rather than just its published post times. He also said that he has been in occasional contact with mutuel department and racing office officials at Oaklawn in response to past instances of post time overlap.

Lakow said he did not know what caused Oaklawn’s delay Saturday, but added, “Things happen–horses get loose; there are issues in the paddock; issues taking races off the turf; a tractor stalls on the track. We’re trying to do our best, but again, we were three minutes off our post and they were 21 minutes off their post that day.”

Lakow said he recently requested a list of off times from Equibase for the month of April to analyze examples of overlap, of which he says there have been approximately five during a much quieter month than usual.

“All directors of mutuels watch the races,” Lakow said when asked if the tracks maintained a line of communication mid-card. “They’re all watching TVG or they have [other track feeds] on. They’re watching–there’s no doubt about it. And every track will say the same thing, ‘Well, if Oaklawn takes 15, are we supposed to keep moving off our schedule?’ We have a schedule, and we’re handling twice as much money as Oaklawn. If anything, Oaklawn should stay off of us–not creep up on us.”

While a more detailed explanation was not provided by Oaklawn by the deadline for this story, a spokesperson for the track said it had been working with Equibase to avoid running on top of other tracks. The Arkansas oval operated about one to three minutes later than scheduled through its first five races, and was about five minutes late by its sixth race. It was running about seven minutes late by race seven, which featured an inquiry. Race eight, the GIII Count Fleet Sprint H., was off 14 minutes late.

I'm all over Citation in this baby. Too easy to have Secretariat win, right?!

Virtual Kentucky Derby to be Televised May 2 on NBC - BloodHorse

The virtual race, created by Inspired Entertainment, will feature the 13 past Triple Crown winners and use data algorithms including historical handicapping information about each horse, which helps to determine the probability of their potential finishing positions.

Plans call for an at-home "Derby party," with track officials aiming to raise $2 million for COVID-19 emergency relief efforts. As part of this theme, Churchill Downs will join the Kentucky Derby Museum and other partners to offer virtual tours, Derby cocktail instructions, and an at-home fashion contest.

Beginning on April 30, fans will be able to visit www.KentuckyDerby.comto choose their favorite horse to win the virtual race and also join Churchill Downs in making a charitable donation to COVID-19 emergency relief efforts. All participants who select the winning horse will be entered to win the ultimate Kentucky Derby 146 VIP Experience. Churchill Downs has pledged to match up to $1 million of donations with funds to be directed to the Team Kentucky Fund and Direct Relief. A small percentage will be earmarked for the Relief for Equine Industry Needs, a program managed by the Churchill Downs Foundation designed to benefit workers of the backside whose livelihood has been impacted by COVID-19 and also to help ensure essential care for horses throughout the pandemic.

My ranking of the 13 Triple Crown winners:

13. Omaha -- 1935
12. Sir Barton -- 1919
11. Assault -- 1946
10. Gallant Fox -- 1930
9. Justify -- 2018
8. Whirlaway -- 1941
7. American Pharoah -- 2015
6. War Admiral -- 1937
5. Seattle Slew - 1977
4. Affirmed -- 1978
3. Count Fleet -- 1943
2. Citation -- 1948
1. Secretariat -- 1973

And now comes one writer's morning line odds:

Three graded stakes listed.

1. Grade 2 $200,000 6f for fillies/mares.
2. Grade 3 $100,000 Los Al Derby to be run on the 4th of July.
3. Non-graded $100,000 for Cali breds.

Gulfstream (Florida):
  • Race 7: Luca Panici brought home a 31-to-1 shot for the card's biggest win. The second longest shot on the board in a field of nine.
  • Race 6: Untitled (Luis Saez/Mark Casse) won at 1-to-9 in a field of four. It was his second victory in five starts and his first win since breaking his maiden in his debut by 11 lengths. Following the first race, film producer and multi-horse owner Gary Barber bought a majority interest in the horse through a private purchase and transferred him from trainer Ralph Nicks to Mark Casse. The horse was destined for bigger things but failed to win in two graded stakes and now today was dropped back down in class. We'll see what happens next but I sense this was a paid workout.
  • Tyler Gaffalione served the second day of his four-day suspension. He is scheduled to resume racing on Sunday. He is the leading rider at the meet but likely will be surpassed by Luis Saez who has 22 wins, one behind the leader.
  • Luis Saez added two wins to his yearly total which now stands at 105. He is comfortably in the lead for most wins among all riders this year in North America.
  • Irad Ortiz, Jr. will return to riding on Saturday. He last rode on March 19 prior to a self-imposed quarantine. He was the nation's leading rider at the time but is now third with 90 victories in 2020.
Oaklawn (Arkansas):
  • Nine races, 18 winners: Not one rider or trainer repeated a win.
  • Robertino Diodoro became the fourth trainer in history to win 50 races at an Oaklawn meet. The others: David Vance in 1974 (still active, been training since the 1960s), Cole Norman (2003, since passed away) and Steve Asmussen (2019).

    • Blackberry Wine
    • Winning Impression
  • Scenario 1: The race is split into two divisions if up to 24 horses are entered. Each race would be worth $500,000. • ILLINOIS: There is a new stay-at-home order for the state that goes into May. Previous, Illinois and Arlington seemed to have a revamped agreement to run July 4 - Sept. 26. But that is now in trouble because of more than one issue. There is much concern in Illinois right now but another meeting is slated for some time in May.
  • Luis Saez (Gulfstream), Samy Camacho (Tampa Bay) and Joe Talamo (Oaklawn) each rode three winners today.

NBCSN pick up TVG coverage today from 4-8 pm ET.

Tampa Bay (Florida):
  • Samy Camacho/Gerald Bennett went back-to-back.
  • Samy Camacho had the riding triple.
  • Gerald Bennett, who is the leading trainer at the meet, was a perfect 3 3-0-0 today.
Gulfstream (Florida):
  • No repeats yet: Through seven races, seven different riders and conditioners have been victorious. Until the 8th race that is...
  • So much for that! Luis Saez went back-to-back and as stated yesterday it was just a matter of immediate time before he took the rider's lead at the meet which he now has with 24 wins.
  • So much for that, Part 2! Luis Saez went back-to-back-to-back under a hand ride for Todd Pletcher who had the horse for the first time in Graceful Princess' seventh career start. Not only a three-win day but a natural hat trick for Saez.
  • Race 10: Kobe Fifty Two (Emisael Jaramillo/Gilberto Zerpa) went gate-to-wire in his debut race. The trainer is 14 7-1-0 (50%/57%) with first-time starters the past two years. Fathered by the terrific turf sire Sky Mesa. The horse is named after the deceased former basketball player who once own a race horse. Runner up? Nothin But Net.
  • Luca Panici suffered broken ribs and will be sidelined 2-to-3 weeks after Mrs. Miniver, who he was riding, suffered a heart attack
Oaklawn (Arkansas):
  • Race 4: Calvin Borel and Cecil Borel combined for another winner. Cecil is 15 7-0-3 (47%/67%) in 2020 with his brother Calvin riding the last six winners. The winner was sent off at 13-to-1.
  • Race 9: Wow! I mean... wow! Keep an eye on this one, stakes races have to be in his future. Volatile (Ricardo Santana, Jr./Steve Asmussen) buried the competition in the stretch to improve lifetime to 4 3-1-0-0. The 4-year-old colt, a son to Violence, was purchased for $850,000 in 2017. This was his first race since November. That is a wonderful training job by Asmussen.
  • Race 10: No Parole (Joe Talamo/Tom Amoss) won for the fourth time in five lifetime starts. It was the Louisiana-bred's first win outside his own state. It was the second straight win for a Violence runner. The jockey-trainer teamed for a second win today, the third victory for the rider.
  • Riders up! The four big boys won eight of the ten races. As of tonight, the leaders are: Ricardo Santana, Jr. (51 wins), Martin Garcia (48 wins), Joe Talamo (48 wins) and David Cohen (43 wins).
  • California: The connections have collectively received passing grades at this meet.
