Looks like the city is going to play chicken again.

Would almost bet this is planned to force the franchise into a long term lease.

Hasn’t Bettman came out and said they can’t stay in Glendale long term?

Only after Glendale terminated the original lease with Ice Arizona.

While there is growth around Westgate and a coupe of big project are coming, it doesn't resolve the issues with the arena.

They also said it when the current owner bought the team.

Wow. Is this is retaliation to the arena plans in Tempe? Today was the original RFP which got moved by 2 weeks for a reply.

The beat just keeps going on for this franchise. If the plans in Tempe get approved quickly they'll still need a home to bridge the gap and it could be a long one.

Is it?

Phoenix was developing a rivalry with Vegas and of course the 2 SoCal teams.

They were the team that made the most geographic sense. There's no way in hell they were gonna split up Edmonton and Calgary lmao (and both are slightly further west anyway). The overwhelming and main reason the Coyotes were moved to the central is the Pacific had 9 teams and geographically moving them made the most sense.

Owner just bought a $12.5 million home in Phoenix. Don't think his plan is to go anywhere.

Looks at what's going on.....

Glendale has been adamant for years about wanting the Coyotes to sign a long term lease.

Meruelo has been looking for a new location since buying the franchise. Even mentioned he had two possibilities in the East Valley.

Tempe now has an RFP out for a new sports arena.... due in about two weeks. Coyotes are the defacto applicant given a sports arena is part of the RFP. But it will take 3-4 years for that project to be completed.

So Glendale KNOWS it's a forgone conclusion they will leave GRA in 2025 or 2026...

UNLESS.....

They try sabotaging the Tempe deal by forcing the Coyotes to sign a long term agreement or giving them no place to play.

Pretty sure a lease will get done in the end. The city doesn’t want to lose a keystone tenant and the Coyotes don’t have any real good options for relocating in such a short time frame. This is all just posturing for the negotiation.

Coyotes and the NHL can go tell Glendale to pound sand if they try to pull that stunt and leave the city with no major anchor and pay off the rest of the cost themselves.

If a new arena in Tempe pans out, Glendale will be stuck with a building with no major tenant and with about a dozen years to go in the bonds anyways.

I've said in previous threads on this matter, the team moving within the region is a bigger threat to the city than them leaving the state altogether.

I wonder if this had anything to do with the delayed RFP date. Not pretty.
