Are the oilers just a poorly built team?

The entire organization is failing the fans and players. This team is not built poorly, it's worse. It's a disaster, and it's going to take some time to fix.

If a player like McDavid steps in and the team still looks like a bottom feeder, there are serious problems.

In the past 9ish years, Oilers have had 7 different head coaches.... Mac T, Quinn, Renney, Krueger, Eakins, Nelson and MacLellan

I realize coaches are always the one to get blame, but cmon there is something else going on here.. Cant ALWAYS blame the coaches... Especially that many

Where are those coaches now? The coaches have sucked. But the people who hired them are at fault.

He couldn't really do much, with the cap problems and the lack of assets that other teams would be interested in. If he would have been willing to dump his first round pick or one of Draisaitl or Nurse or RNH that would have been something.

Ya i agree.. There are only a few players/picks that teams would desperately want that he could get a good return with... But its a tough decision for him i would imagine, especially with his poor history of making bigger trades

If the Oilers had any respect for hockey they would release McDavid from his contract and let him sign with a non dumpster fire. Its such a shame that its unbearable to watch a game with McDavid in it.

Hall-McDavid could've been their McKinnon-Rantanen. Too bad.
1. Hall-McDavid >>>>>>> that duo
2. Would've been better to have them drive their own line, Hall with LD and McDavid on another line would've been enough offense for that team to be a cup contender. Should've moved out Nuge, Eberle, not your 2nd best talent in Hall.

Yes, the Oilers should release him from his contract and let him sign with another team, rather than building around him, or trading him for actual assets.

That said, it is absolutely painful as a fan of hockey to see the team around that poor kid.

We're not in the same era of Oilers teams though. There were the pre-McDavid and post-McDavid eras. The unfortunate part is that for some reason the Oilers organization retained much of the management in the pre-McDavid era for some odd reason. But the team took a vastly different direction the moment we won that lottery.

Todd McLellan has had three full years and four full training camps and his on-ice product has gotten noticeably worse and he's become complacent with how the team is run despite teams routinely picking his units apart. This isn't 'fire the coach cuz we're losing!' It's 'fire the coach because it's not 2008 anymore'. The guy's systems are dated.

Poorly built? What?

They have Nurse, who is supposedly Pronger 2.0. They have Klefbom, who has GAR dominance. They have Draisaitl, who is Malkin-west. They have the only Strome brother to have a 50pt season. They have Kailer Yamamoto, who is a rich man's Gaudreau. They have Talbot, who is a top tier #1G. They have Puljujarvi who is the next Hossa. They have RNH who is Datsyuk 2.0. Lucic speaks for himself, exactly what you need to protect Connor from division rivals who might hurt him, like Keller, Gaudreau, and Pettersson. And Zack Kassian is sober now. Adam Larsson was once considered Lidstrom's successor. Evan Bouchard is already a #1D. They have Ty Rattie, who scored at a 29G pace last year.

The Oilers almost beat the Ducks two years ago when Gibson went cold and Talbot went hot. Nuff said.

The Oilers are not poorly built. The refs just hate them!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Other than the obvious McDavid, that team has nothing but busts. Acompianied by horrible trades, poor coaching and management, there is not much to say.

There's a losing culture in Edmonton. They should do a big change up like the hurricanes did last offseason. New GM, new coach, change of players of similar value just to get a different outlook. Keep mcdavid of course.

It's incredible how they have pulled this off

I mean .. a decade of complete suck. Multiple top 3 picks. A "generational" talent (I use quotations cause I'm not fond of that term .. but the point stands).

Yet ... nothing.

It really is rather impressive to fail THAT well at something.

I know everyone loves to blame the coach, but Chiarelli is just awful. He literally hasn’t made a good move as a GM yet and it is totally his fault, he should be gone long before McLellan
Agreed.

Maybe if a team goes through "X" number of HCs in "X" number of years it should allow you you an RFA eligibility? :naughty:
