Calgary got out from being crushed by a failing player in Dion Phaneuf. They dumped him a year late (always dump a player a year early rather than a year late), but they recognized that he's got a head full of rocks and they got his athletic peak and they cashed out...

Let's see if Edmonton does the same thing with Evan Bouchard when the time comes...

On Edmonton, Bouchard is actually bright compared to the likes of Lucic, Kassian and most of their d-men.

Phaneuf is actually a great comparison for Bouchard.

Bouchard's hockey sense is one of his best assets and is nothing like Phaneuf... some of this thread is cringe-worthy.

Aaaaaallllright, if we're going to pick apart the circumstances, expectations, and results surrounding a nearly 9-year old trade that's fine, but we're not on the HOH board to debate how prospects compare to 30-something active players. Let's steer this back a few years.

One Burke-bite I remember - and I can't find a source for this - was that he had his sights set on 5 potential "studs on defense", all from the Western Conference, and that he worked on their respective GMs until Sutter finally gave him Phaneuf. Now, who were those targets, realistically? Probably not Doughty or Keith, as that's too far-fetched for even Burke's imagination. I'd have to imagine Brent Burns and Erik Johnson were in there, as high-potential guys who were traded not long after that. Was he after Seabrook? Suter or even Weber? Jack Johnson? Was this story even true? Does anyone remember this?

Pro tip: you can actually put details about the trade in the thread title, so that people know what they're going to be reading about when they click on the thread.

Or we could just title every thread on the boards with "Can you guess what I want to talk about?"

This is not accurate.

Sutter had shopped Phaneuf on at least two occasions prior to the deal. The first time was during training camp the season he got traded and only Los Angeles and Toronto expressed interest, but Sutter didn't like the offers. He shopped him again over Christmas that season and that point LA was no longer interested so he made a trade with Toronto. No "work" was required to get Phaneuf from Sutter, he was actively trying to get rid of him.

My recollection of the trade was that Toronto had stolen Phaneuf from the Flames in what was very reminiscent of the Thornton to San Jose trade

It was an interesting trade because it was mid-season and the Leafs had bottomed out and weren't competitive. One of the odd trades meant for down-the-road impact taking place in January.
