Having a little hard time finding the voting results for the Hart Trophy in past years and I mean ALL past years. Hockeyreference.com is a good website but it does not have it there that I saw. Can anyone send me a link or a website or something that has all of the Hart Trophy voting results year by year on it? Thanks, BP

Well, every time Hart Trophy voting comes up I always feel the need to point out the biggest rip off in the history of NHL Awards.

1990.

Mark Messier - 227 (29-24-10); Ray Bourque - 225 (29-26-2): The closest vote in history for the award....

....but....

6 voters left Ray off the ballot....

....Indefensible.

The rumor I always heard was that three of them were Edmonton writers. I don't know if that is true or not.

What I do know, and remember quite clearly, (even here in Boston if you can believe it), was the idea floating around that no defensemen should ever again win it....as if it would be akin to say "as good as Orr".

A truly sad day in NHL history.

Unless you consider the runner-up for the Hart in nearly the same esteem as the winner. When I rate players, being #2 is worth nearly as much as being #1. It makes no sense to give the winner tons of credit and the runner up (or third place vote getter...) nothing.

In the same way, though, it makes no sense that the player you vote first gets 10 points, the player you vote second gets 7, the player you vote third gets 5, the player you vote fourth gets 3, and the player you vote third gets 1. Were those guys 10, 7, 5 and 3 times as good as the fifth player? I doubt it.

'90 might not be the biggest rip off.

'51 hart: schmidt won even though howe outscored him by 41%, and won the art ross by a huge 30% margin.

'54 hart: rollins, G for the worst team in the NHL, won. was not even an all star.

'55 hart: ted kennedy won. not an all star. not top 10 in scoring.

'89 pearson: 66 scored 199p but lost to yzerman. (might not be a great example, b/c i think pearson voting starts before the season is over)

voters haven't always used the same standards of voting, though.

Here's my raw data from 1947-present. It's compiled from BM67's awards posts and various newspapers (mainly the Globe & Mail).

Thanks a lot. That list warms my heart. There are some plyers I always wondered if they got the recognition they deserved. Seeing them on the list is great even though they never won the Hart.

/Cheers

Yeah, but Theo's win was legitimate. Messier's was not. Bourque was certainly better, and had even 1st place votes and more second place votes than Messier. Messier won via 6 writers leaving Bourque completely off the ballot intentionally, 3 of them Edmonton writers, to deny him 3rd place votes. Even 2 3rd place votes or 1 second place votes clinched it for Bourque.

I was looking for media links for a long time, but I remember clear as day the controversy when it happened, and how every Hockey analyst pointed the finger at Edmonton Journalists.

But the biggest ripoff was Rollins winning. They basically gave him the trophy for his performance the year before. He could not win the year before with his 27W/28L/15T 6 Shutouts and 2.50GAA because Howe had demolished a few records. So they gift wrapped it the next year, which he did not deserve it for. Rollins was 12W/47L/7T and 5 shutouts + 3.23GAA the year he won the Hart.

I also don't like the idea of more first place votes breaking a tie. If you have more first place votes under the whack point system, then you have a few fewer votes in total. If fewer voters thought you were top-3 or top-5 than the other guy, and you only tied because a higher proportion of those who did vote for you, voted you first, then you shouldn't win.

Iginla's Flames were out of playoff contention months before the season ended, so all they did was try to pad his stats. He deserved the Pearson (most outstanding player) but not the Hart (most valuable player).

I've always said this too. Not to take anything away from Iggy, but anyone who paid attention to the Habs that year can remember that Theodore basically put them on his back and carried them into the playoffs

Not quite the same thing. Pronger had a clear lead in 1st place votes. Not surprising given the amount of hype the media was generating on how defensemen are not being given consideration anymore.

I meant the vote total was close. The original comment was that 1990 was the closest vote ever.
