Numerous goalies won cups with save percentages under that, some of which are in the Hall of Fame. The hockey world was very different before the butterfly became effectively mandatory.

I think Niemi had at least 1 series under .900 in our cup run. I don't remember though. I would guess it used to be fairly common if you're talking about "ever".

What was the collective save percentage between Philadelphia and Pittsburgh in round 1 of 2012?

I'm too lazy to do math and get the totals and too lazy to find the totals but here are the individual game save %'s.

Stats courtesy of NHL.com https://www.nhl.com/gamecenter/pit-vs-phi/2012/04/18/2011030144#game=2011030144,game_state=final

Game 1
Bryzgalov .893
Fleury .846

Game 2
Bryzgalov .821
Fleury .767

Game 3
Bryzgalov .886
Fleury .786 Johnson .667

Game 4
Bryzgalov .722 Bobrovsky .722
Fleury .880

Game 5
Bryzgalov .870
Fleury .923

Game 6
Bryzgalov .968
Fleury .818

So in 6 games only twice did a goalie go 900 or better.

just curious

Grant Fuhr won the CUP twice with a save percentage below .900. Sub .900 save percentages used to be the norm. He was 31-5 in those two cup runs too.

I am sure there are more examples, that was the first I checked.

A ton in the 70's,80's early 90's.

For a long time .900 was significantly above league average even in the playoff and elite:

http://www.quanthockey.com/TS/TS_SavePercentage.php

For recent example, Brodeur save percentage in 2000-2001 against Toronto was .878:
https://www.nhl.com/player/martin-brodeur-8455710?stats=gamelogs-p-nhl&season=20002001

Dan Cloutier against St-Louis, .898:
https://www.nhl.com/player/dan-cloutier-8460516?stats=gamelogs-p-nhl&season=20022003

You can look at the lowest playoff percentage of goaltender with 4+ wins in recent year's to find some case :

Billy Smith was over .900 for all 4 cup years...even was over .900 in 83-84...I forgot how insanely good he was in the playoffs.

In 1973 The Hawks beat the Habs 8-7 in game 5. Habs eventually won the cup. Ken Dryden's Save percentage probably wasn't very good for that year. He let in 50 goals. IN 1971 he let in 61 on the way to the Cup.
