Being the most skilled dman in Carolina's organisation is also a plus for him IMO.

At least as a healthy scratch, otherwise he will probably have to clear waivers to play in Albany.
It´s also possible that he secures his spot till the injured players come back and with the bad luck of Carolina it wouldn´t surprise me if there are other injured defenders at the time of their return.

Tanabe he'd likely be above on the depth chart at this point. When Kaberle is healthy he'll likely be a scratch as it would be between him and Hutchinson for the #6/PP roster spot. With how Hutchinson has sparked the Canes PP of late my bet is that Babchuk would be the odd man out but that's no garentuee either. Laviolette had a tendency to run with an 11 forward/7 defenseman lineup last season durring the regular season, the Canes just haven't been healthy enough on the blue line to use that at any point this season so there's no telling if he'll go to it or not.
