That's not a very high endorsement at all! Was there anything in particular that made you not like his style of game?
Don't get me wrong, I thought Andrew Ladd was often one of the best players on the ice throughout the season. Obvioulsy he was motivated to get drafted high. This should also speak volumes: he's willing to go after his goals. I was never in the Hitmen dressing room, but I'm sure he'll be a leader.
However, I question a few parts of his game, especially how they might translate to the NHL game.
-Sometimes it looked as though he
really lacked first-step quickness. If the Canes want him to be a John LeClair moulded player, this shouldn't be a big deal...I'm sure Stall will find him open in front of the net. I just don't think he's scary off the rush.
-For a "big guy", I thought he got bumped around a little too often, considering it was junior. I question his strenght on the puck.
-The Getzlaf Factor: I thought Ryan Getzlaf played a more predominant role than anyone in the WHL this year, and that includes Phaneuf. He did it all. I saw two games where Ladd had two points: problem was that they were all 2nd assists on great 1-on-1 plays by Getzlaf. It's become cliche....but I seriously wonder how much this had to do with it.
That being said, I don't think the Canes wasted a pick. Viscous checker, relentless puck pursuer, shot blocker, all with some nifty hands. I'm sure he'll help them win. I just don't think it will be with the same panache that might be expected out of a 4th overall pick.
