He (and his dad) would tell you he owes it to good mentoring by his junior (Chicago Cougars) coach.
When he played travel and high school he was the guy who took it end to end and finished.
After making the Cougars in his 1st 3 games he tried to be that guy … without success.
His coach sat him without explanation the 4th game then had a talk with him. Told him IF he was going to make it past that level he needed to develop his whole game. Everyone there was the best on a travel team. There were guys better than him at the fancy stuff. If he would commit to excellence in Faceoffs, penalty kill, being sandpaper and a bitch to play against he would get noticed.
It worked. The 1st time NM’s coach saw him he was there to see someone else. Twice in that game they were 2 men short. Both times Matt was the center chosen to defend it. That stood out to him.
He’s become a gritty 3rd/4th line center. Low scoring totals but, well a bitch to play against.

I've been a season-ticket holder for Minnesota State hockey for 22 years. So, I'll be seeing him here in Mankato next season. Congratulations to him.
