Why should things be gifted to us? New York and Montreal are big markets who are doing fine. No excuses for us.

Not as some knee jerk reaction to Edmonton winning Connor McDavid but there has always been something here. There are too many teams and an inequitable amount of finances distributed to franchises that aren't profitable. Revenue generated by the Toronto Maple Leafs franchise gained from paying customers doesn't go towards a better product on the ice it goes to other franchises who sometimes can't give away tickets for free.

The solution is a rogue league, a small league in a few premium locations like Toronto, New York, Chicago, Montreal, Los Angeles that has no salary cap, no entry draft, rules designed to make the best product possible, no guaranteed contracts, unrestricted free agency when each contract expires, no limit salary ceilings, shorter schedule, less games per week.

Do you really think that the players would agree to no guaranteed contracts?

This team is terrible at spending money under a cap system, imagine the level of stupidity a carte blanche would allow.

well last time we got 2 eastern conference finals + 2 semi finals in a 4 year span, so

Everyone gets where the OP's frustration is coming from, but his/her suggestions are total craziness - something you would have seen from Ballard if he owned the team in this age.
I do agree that the markets that support their team through thick and thin and subsequently keep the small markets afloat and also provide (ie minor hockey) the vast majority of the game's stars should be given something.
What would be fair but not throw out the balance too much?

Is it possible for MLSE to just tell the league, we are done with revenue sharing and the salary cap. We are done with this "fair" random draft lottery crap. We are done supporting your unprofitable franchises. Yes we have had bad management for almost five decades, but we dont give a ****.

We are the most valuable franchise in the NHL. You either throw us a bone in the form of no salary cap or ufa age of 23, or else we will just pack it in for a year or two and see how the league does without us. It's like we are a bank lending out money to people and charging no interest. We can't keep supporting this crap and get nothing in return.

The League would probably be better off if Toronto wasn't in the league. At first no, lose tv ratings, although most Leaf fans would probably adopt new teams.

What would happen is with less revenue the Leafs pull in, the lower the cap goes. The lower the cap goes the lower the cap floor goes, which helps the teams on a budget and maybe more teams in the league end up profitable.

No, MLSE does not have that kind of pull.

If the owners locked them out long enough for sure. The Owners for the most part have more money than the players. The players will always cave on more than the owners.

No. This wouldn't work.

If we want the leafs to get better we need better management. There is no reason why the leafs couldn't have a championship team by now - it's just been a poorly run organization. Don't get mad at the league for our own incompetence

What he said.

Sorry this just isn't possible.

Leafs will have to find a way to compete under the same CBA rules as all the other 29 NHL teams do.
