Is it possible for MLSE to just tell the league, we are done with revenue sharing and the salary cap. We are done with this "fair" random draft lottery crap. We are done supporting your unprofitable franchises. Yes we have had bad management for almost five decades, but we dont give a ****.

We are the most valuable franchise in the NHL. You either throw us a bone in the form of no salary cap or ufa age of 23, or else we will just pack it in for a year or two and see how the league does without us. It's like we are a bank lending out money to people and charging no interest. We can't keep supporting this crap and get nothing in return.

No. This wouldn't work.

If we want the leafs to get better we need better management. There is no reason why the leafs couldn't have a championship team by now - it's just been a poorly run organization. Don't get mad at the league for our own incompetence

Not sure how the whole revenue sharing works but I guess it would be possible if the Leafs were majority owned by multi-billionaire who didn't care about profits from his hockey team, then he could threaten to lower Leafs ticket prices to the point that he wouldn't have to revenue share. But Leafs are owned by entities that want to maximize the profits.

I do wish they'd abolish the current cap system. I understand having it. But they should adopt a soft cap/hard cap luxury tax system.

As fans, we should just vote with our money. Spend less money on the Leafs and let the league know we don't want to finance Bettman's manifest destiny program. Kill the cash cow and open up new demands next CBA.

As far as I know all Canadian teams are profitable.Maybe we can form our own league with no need for a salary cap.The NHL would fold.

Refuse to compete in the league.
Refuse to ice a team

Then Bell and Rogers lose A LOT of money. They own majority of the team, so they lose money by not operating, yet they will still have operating costs (all the Salaries). Then they also will lose money in there respected companies for lack of content to provide to it's customers.

The fact that there is only one NHL franchise in the world's biggest hockey market illustrates how much power MLSE holds on the league.

that might be more to the fact that the Commissioner loves Florida and the Desert more.

It's not going to happen. I get the exasperation though - it's rough to want to believe when there's no hope and nothing really to look forward to after a disaster of a season and the prospect of several more bad ones in a rebuild with no guarantees.

It is true we have had incompetant management, however there should be metrics in place to allow more than one method for a team to get better. Richer teams should be allowed to spend to compete. Poorer teams can follow the drafting and developing model. Players should be allowed to choose where they want to play at an earlier age.
In fact, one could argue the salary cap and the current system has prevented the league from maximizing profits in a market like toronto where playoff revenue could do wonders for revenue sharing.
Also, if the leafs continue to be bad, it could be very possible to see a decline in hockey talent coming out of the GTA or even southern ontario. Less kids being inspired to play hockey.

Not as some knee jerk reaction to Edmonton winning Connor McDavid but there has always been something here. There are too many teams and an inequitable amount of finances distributed to franchises that aren't profitable. Revenue generated by the Toronto Maple Leafs franchise gained from paying customers doesn't go towards a better product on the ice it goes to other franchises who sometimes can't give away tickets for free.

The solution is a rogue league, a small league in a few premium locations like Toronto, New York, Chicago, Montreal, Los Angeles that has no salary cap, no entry draft, rules designed to make the best product possible, no guaranteed contracts, unrestricted free agency when each contract expires, no limit salary ceilings, shorter schedule, less games per week.

Yes they lose a lot of money IF it gets to that point. It is threat first and foremost. Imagine it like a mini labour dispute, but instead of the nhlpa, it is mlse.
1 step backward, 3 steps forward approach. Would the league be willing to risk losing MLSE for a year or two

Sigh, more whining because things aren't handed to us?
Have to agree. Things would have to become really corrupt UEFA style wise for the Leafs to have an advantage. You would have just rich clubs at the top only this being the Leafs they would be Liverpool and miss out regardless.
