** - min 8 series.
If you gave me 500 guesses, I never would have picked Larry Aurie. (I know - it's a small sample size, and a lot of those are 3rd place finishes - but I never would have guessed he'd be anywhere close to this list).

I could've gotten there by guess 250 I think.

I think poor Larry is just easy to over look

Thank you, I'll be here all night

These stats really confirm how crazy Gretzky was in big games too. He has more series as #1 than many hall of famers even played.

One day the ability of Lidstrom to play so many minutes with strong defense without putting his team on the PK will be way more valued than during his time I suspect. A bit more like getting on the line, putting opponent on the line in basketball.

Every 2PIM you take is around giving away 0.2 goal plus removing offense for your team for that time.

Generally speaking you're correct about high-PIM players costing their team points. It would be 0.2 for every 2 PIMs perhaps, but then you have to remove the PIMs accumulated that don't actually put your team at a disadvantage because they were fights or otherwise offsetting penalties.

The Flyers won Game 6 of the 1974 Finals 1-0 by a goal scored on a 4-on-3 PP. Not only should Bobby Clarke not be penalized (by us after the fact, obviously he should have still gone to the box) for drawing an offsetting penalty with Bobby Orr, it should be held up as a point in Clarke's favour.

Net PIM being obviously the wanted value here, creating penalty with your play being the other side of the coin, giving 0.2 goals to your team and shutting down the opposition for 2 minutes. Mario Lemieux for example was maybe lethal in that regard, boosting a team PPO and PP% at the same time.

I don't know if there's any evidence for that.

Here's Pittsburgh in the playoffs:

20005.09414.31112.59
20013.391518.0813.110

Observations
  • They ate a lot of SH goals on the PP. 1992 is the only year where they have a very strong net PP%
  • PP chances were high in 1989, and kind of high in 1991 and 1996 (just looking at Lemieux years). But they don't look to be anything special or attributable to Lemieux (Pens got 5.5 chances per game against 92 Rangers, which Lemieux mostly missed - though he did take at least one slash).
  • PP% is high in 1989, 1992, and 1993. Beyond that, the Penguins PP% is above average, with or without Lemieux. (Except for the historically terrible 1994, with a 0.0% net PP%.)
  • Opponents help determine PP chances too. Running into the 2001 Devils is probably bad for getting PP chances, while playing the 1989 Flyers helps a ton.

I would look over larger sample of game than a single series to try to find one, sadly it seem that hockey reference game log has PPG but not PPO in the season back then.

If we look at raw penalty minutes as a proxy, the opponent do not seem to get more when Mario play they go down a lot for both teams when Lemieux is in the games, but considering how large 5 minutes.

In the 1991-1992 and 92-93 season looking at the very imperfect PIM:

Penguins go from a +0.42 Minute a game team to a -23 minutes, a nice shift of more than half a minute, scoring 1.03 goal a game on the PP to a 1.26, but maybe it is not by adding PPO, just a better PP%.

Joe Thornton never led a series in points? I know he wasn't great in the playoffs... but damn.
1) He did, so there's something wrong with the data gathering in the OP.
2) Leading a series is less significant than leading one's team, it's a relative figure. If the team wins the series and the player leads their team in scoring, that's far more significant than leading the series in scoring but losing the series.

I.... Am extremely confused by this statement? How exactly is leading your team more impressive than leading the entire series? That means you outscored the other team aswell.... Which is how you win hockey games. I seriously think I may be in the twilight zone here.

You removed leading your team + beating the opponent and winning the series vs leading a series you did not win in scoring, we can assume the poster will consider winning the series and leading the series at scoring the best among the 3 scenario obviously.
