could it be a goaltender who led chicago to a stanley cup?
Yes it could :) I was realy tempted to pick him, but IMHO Foster was better. I am a little suprised that no-one picked him up though.

This one suprised me. I also thought Gadsby lasted a lot longer than he should have.

I was just wondering how everyone here would rate the teams in the following categories

Offensive Ability
Defensive Ability
Team Toughness
Goaltending
Overall

Well I've made a start, and it needs some revisions, since even I don't think my rankings are right.

I've started by rating the players out of 10 in each area. When I've done all 12 teams, I'll have to make a review, and then probably weight things like starter/backup, and actually have to decide who I think is the top goalie of all-time. A lot of goalies rated at 9.5 right now.

Any how just to get some thoughts flowing:

Offense:
1 - Quebec Nordiques
1 - New Jersey Devils
3 - Vancouver Millionaires
4 - Philadelphia Flyers
5 - Toronto Maple Leafs
5 - Colorado Rockies
7 - Detroit Red Wings
7 - Boston Bruins

Defense:
1 - Boston Bruins
2 - Vancouver Millionaires
3 - Philadelphia Flyers
3 - Colorado Rockies
3 - New Jersey Devils
6 - Quebec Nordiques
7 - Toronto Maple Leafs
8 - Detroit Red Wings

Toughness:
1 - Boston Bruins
2 - Toronto Maple Leafs
3 - Colorado Rockies
4 - New Jersey Devils
5 - Detroit Red Wings
6 - Vancouver Millionaires
7 - Philadelphia Flyers
8 - Quebec Nordiques

Goaltending:
1 - New Jersey Devils
2 - Vancouver Millionaires
2 - Boston Bruins
2 - Toronto Maple Leafs
2 - Pittsburgh Penguins
6 - Colorado Rockies
6 - Winnipeg Jets
8 - Philadelphia Flyers
8 - Quebec Nordiques
8 - Los Angeles Kings
11 - Montreal Canadiens
12 - Detroit Red Wings

Overall:
1 - Philadelphia Flyers
1 - New Jersey Devils
3 - Quebec Nordiques
3 - Boston Bruins
5 - Vancouver Millionaires
6 - Toronto Maple Leafs
6 - Colorado Rockies
8 - Detroit Red Wings

I think my ratings might be getting worse rather than better. Remember still in the rough draft phase. :teach:

sawchuck is in the roy territory

fhur won 4 cups

both my golaies got over 400 wins

I think there shouyld be arule no rankign your team#1 :)

You mean Roy is in the Sawchuk territory. Since we're looking at them in their prime only their best year applies, not the career numbers, so most everybody is comparable. I have to say that Goalie is the one area where it is neccesary to look at career almost as much as the best year to get a true perspective.

Fuhr won 5 Cups, but didn't play a game in one Cup run, and Sawchuk won 4, but they both played for about 20 years. 9 Cups in 40 is nothing compared to Dryden and Broda with 11 in 22 years.

Goalie - Cups - Years
Dryden - 6 - 8
Plante - 6 - 18
Broda - 5 - 14
Fuhr - 5 - 19
Bower - 4 - 15
Roy - 4 - 18
Smith - 4 - 18
Sawchuk - 4 - 21
Brodeur - 3 - 11
Durnan - 2 - 7
Hainsworth - 2 - 11
Parent - 2 - 13
Cheevers - 2 - 14
Vernon - 2 - 19
Hasek - 1 - 12
Thompson - 1 - 12
Belfour - 1 - 15
Richter - 1 - 15
Esposito - 1 -16
Hall - 1 - 18
Tretiak - 0 - 0
Foster - 0 - 0
Lindbergh - 0 - 5
Worters - 0 - 12

I can't match your 400+ wins but then again nobody can match Dryden's career 57 losses. Dryden/Broda combined have fewer losses than Fuhr.

You really think Plante and Thompson deserve 6th?

Plante is probably the best goalie after Roy and Sawchuk, and is in the top 5 goaltenders all-time in shutouts.

Just so happens you have the same exact 5 teams in each category too..

you are also underestimating Hasek and Lindbergh. If Pelle didn't ram himself into a pole he would be one of the top goaltenders of the 80's hell he had a 63 - 30 - 3 record. Just because he died at a young age is no reason to look down on him.

As I said I've made a start. I have rated 5 teams (7 now but I have to add them) totally and all teams in goaltending, and yes it needs some work. As of right now I have most of the starters at 9.5 out of 10 and the difference is in the backups. I probably will have to weight it in favor of the starters somehow, and I have to decide who deserves 10s.

Yeah, I might have to upgrade Thompson, but I do have him rated the same as Cheevers.

Yeah, looking at the score I gave Lidbergh, I might have left him a little low, but he didn't do anything in his short career to put him above any of the others taken. He never won a Cup or a Hart. He didn't lead the league in GAA or shutouts. His 87-49-15 and 12-10 playoff record are good/very good but not great. He won the AHL MVP award, but Maine didn't win the Calder Cup that year.

I can understand it being low though thanks to the number of years he actually played. He was a hell of a goaltender who IMO was one of the top 3 from the 80's (Fuhr and Roy the other and Fuhr is debateable)

but Dryden losing so few games is because he played on what is quite possibly the best NHL team ever assembled.

It's not so much his short career as his lack of "glory" that have him rated low. Compare his best year to Pete Peeters' and Ron Hextall's just before and after his. Peeters was runner-up for the Hart and Hextall won the Conn Smythe and both were 1st team and Vezina winners. Lindbergh showed signs of being a very good goalie, but he didn't get the chance to prove himself as an all-time great. There's a fine line between giving him credit for what he might have done and giving him too much or to little credit. Right now I've ranked him equal to Vernon and Richter so it's not like I give him no credit.

As for Dryden compare him to Durnan and Thompson. Durnan in 7 years won 6 Vezinas and was named 1st all-star 6 times, but he only won 2 Cups. Thompson won only 1 Cup on a team that won something like 5 straight American Division titles. Dryden's record is helped by the team he played on but you don't have the best team of all-time without an all-time great goalie. He won the Conn Smythe and was runner-up for the Hart in his first two years as a pro, before the Candiens became a great team, and this shows that he wasn't just the product of his team. With Dryden the Habs won 6 Cups in 8 years. They didn't win in the year before or after he was there, and they din't win the year he sat out.

I cant help it if my players were superb atheltes mentally and physically and thus had extended careers:)

When i drafted I wanted a high # of career wins and Stanley Cuos and shut outs with mr shutout Terry Sawchuk

It is much easier to decide who is last in each area than it is to decide who is first, and in most cases top to bottom isn't much of a spread.

The rankings don't figure for Detroit playing Orr 30+ minutes a game, which is the most likely strategy. Goal is the only area where I gave extra value to the starter over the backup.

Overall also doesn't fully account for any glaring weaknesses that might cripple a team, such as Quebec having a 5'7" defender, four 5'8" players, including a defender, and two 5'9" skaters, plus another handful under 6'. Kharlamov can skate like the wind and be a force on offense, but Clancy and Suchy are going to have trouble clearing the crease.

Is anybody else even making a stab at ranking the teams?
