All-Time Draft #12, Part IV

1). The draft will last 30 rounds. You must draft 2 goalies, 6 defensemen, 12 forwards, a coach and 3 extra picks. In addition, since there will be no MLD12 (as ATD13 will begin in January) each team is to draft six minor leaguers (three forwards, two dmen, a goalie), guys to simply indicate depth in the organization or to be call-ups if desired in a playoff series. For each player called up, one must be sent down (simply indicate on the playoff thread). Your roster thread post should clearly indicate the call-up squad as apart from the main team.

2). The time windows will be tight but reasonable.

12 hour clock for the first two rounds
then 10 hour clock for rounds 3-8,
then 8 hour clock for rounds 9-14,
then 6 hour clock for rounds 15-20,
then 4 hour clock for rounds 21-30 (rounds 25-30 are double picks, so will be 3 rounds)

One hour time window deduction for each skipped pick with a minimum one- hour clock guaranteed regardless of deductions.

3). Trading is by the THREE TRADES, THREE OBJECTOR RULE. Each team may make a maximum of three trades and any trade which is objected to by at least three teams' GMs will not be accepted, will need to be re-worked or dropped. There will be a 24-hour period to object to a trade, and accordingly, NO TRADING OF PICKS THAT ARE ON THE CLOCK.

4). Regular season rankings MUST BE VOTED ON by at least one GM (if the team is co-GM'd) per team. The penalty if not done is a lowering in the standings because we would also be ranking our own teams in our own divisions (e.g., most teams will rank their own team 1st in their own division; if a team doesn't vote they loose out on a 1st place vote opportunity and hence their team's ranking will be lower than it could have been).

5). In addition to submitting rankings of teams in every division (as per usual), each team is to submit their vote on the following twelve categories concerning the teams in the other division of the same conference. To be clear, regarding the categories: Everyone votes on the following categories for those in the OTHER division of one's own conference. (Note: The results will be tallied and the best of each division will be finalists in a second round of voting after open debate regarding which of the four divisional finalists in each category is the draft league's best.)

The 12 categories to vote on (rank the top three teams in the division 1st, 2nd, 3rd for each):

I. Top scoring line (likely a 1st or 2nd line)
II. Top two-way line (likely a 2nd or 3rd line)
III. Top defensive line (likely a 3rd or 4th line)
IV. Top starting 5 (lw-c-rw-d-d when puck drops to begin game)
V. Top defensemen duo pairing
VI. Top Top-4 core defense
VII. Top blueline overall (all 7 dmen together)
VIII. Top goaltending tandem (sharing regular season workload)
IX. Top powerplay (two 5-men units, coaching)
X. Top penalty kill (two 4-men units, goaltending, coaching)
XI. Top team chemistry (consideration of how skaters gell, how coaching "fits" with team style, etc)
XII. Top call-up squad (the quality and usefulness of the 3 forwards, 2 dmen and 1 goalie on the farm)

So, after votes are tallied, we will have four finalists for each category (the best from each division) and can openly argue thereafter which of them is the best and why, to be followed by another round of voting by all GMs on the four finalists.

6). REGULAR SEASON AND PLAYOFF VOTING TO BE A SET RESPONSIBILITY.

i) VOTING expected of every team, even after being eliminated. In a 32-team draft, there will be 16 teams/8 series starting after the first round, and the 16 just eliminated teams are to vote on the eight series in round two, four series in the divisional finals, two series in the conference finals and the championship final. This is an obligation you take on when joining the all-time draft. (Choosing to have a co-GM makes it easier for a team to meet this obligation.)

ii) Assuming a 32-team draft, all 8 teams per division would play in the opening round (1st vs. 8th, 4th vs. 5th, etc).

iii) The playoffs would last exactly 18 days, as follows:

The first round will last five days (three days discussion, one day voting, one day results).
The second round will last four days (two days discussion, one day voting, one day results).
The third, fourth and fifth rounds will each last three days (18-hour discussion, 24 hour voting, half day results).

The discussion period CAN BE extended IF AND ONLY IF under a revised, extended schedule - as might be discussed following the draft - the playoffs end date to be no later than the first week of December. This draft will not go into the holiday season.

And a few quick reminders:
1) You are REQUIRED to PM the next GM(s) after you pick. If you announce a list pick for a GM, you are still required to PM the next GM.
2) You are expected to send a list to another GM if you don't expect to be around for a while. This draft can move very fast at times. If you're not going to be around for six or eight hours, and you will be picking within the next 10 selections, there is a good chance we will get to your pick within eight hours. This is especially true for weekends and evenings.
3) We do like it when you post extensive information about a player. However, if the next GM, or the next few GMs, are on-line when your pick comes up, announce the pick, and then post the detailed bio afterwards. It's a common courtesy, and it helps keep the draft moving.

It seems to me that durability is less valuable in the ATD than in real life, simply because the replacements are so much better. There's a far larger gap between any player and the 13th forward/7th D in real life than in the ATD. Especially once you get into the bottom half of the roster, there may not be a big difference at all in the ATD, where in real life those players would have really been missed on their teams.

Does anyone else see it that way? Obviously you don't want to build a team full of fragile players, and the gap between Mario Lemieux and his replacement is still huge, but I think there's a real difference in value.

I never put much stock into durability for an ATD team. In my opinion, a player's durability is reflected in their scoring placements. Obviously if you were a great player but were always injured, and didn't get quite the placements that would have reflected your skill level, my opinion of you takes that into account. There is no reason to worry about durability.

Honestly, if a guy has missed enough picks to have his clock reduced by 4 hours at this point, what justification do we have to say that he will become more reliable later on? I say GMs should get their clock reduced to a minimum of 1 hour. You should know when your pick is coming up, it takes like 2 minutes out of your day to check the draft list and send a list if your pick is coming up.

I've addressed this already. All of my skipped picks have came in the AM on work nights or when I'm at school (HF is blocked there). When I get home from work, my internet is disconnected. Pick coming soon or later tonight.

I never put much stock into durability for an ATD team. In my opinion, a player's durability is reflected in their scoring placements. Obviously if you were a great player but were always injured, and didn't get quite the placements that would have reflected your skill level, my opinion of you takes that into account. There is no reason to worry about durability.

What? Duff has a major edge in skating and defensive play, some edge in goalscoring. That's about it.

And a big edge in the playoffs. What else is there, then?

It's much easier to be top 20 in 6-team league than 12 or 16. 2-2.6 times easier, actually.

Duff has two top-20s in points (17th & 18th). So does Hadfield (4th and 18th). Being 4th among 252 puts you in the top 1.6%. Finishing 17th among 108? Top 15.7%. 18th for Hadfield? Top 8.3%. 18th for Duff? Top 16.7%. Twice worse. The difference is enormous.

TDMM and jarek adressed this one but you should know this is just wrong.

P.S. Make sure you draft the guy who finished 60th in 2009 since that's 8% down the NHL list and therefore better than the time Hadfield was 18th with a measly 14 teams in the league.

But as unimpressive as Fuhr's personal numbers were, they were better than Cheevers', in both the season and playoffs. Fuhr could also handle a massive workload and received more in the way of personal accolades. And of course, Fuhr won more often.

Benedict was, what, 32 at the time? That's hardly old, even for back then. Let's also not forget that it's not like Benedict was on his last legs, he played 4+ seasons after that. He is very much applicable. His tenure with the Maroons was pretty decent, but the only year he was considered for the Hart was when they were a 9-win team.

And only Worters and another goalie were ever considered for the Hart more than once in the Hart's first 15 years. So Benedict didn't exactly do any worse than the Norm.

No. Just, no. Awarding him all-star selections because his team got better is one thing, and probably still very wrong, but to just chalk him up a couple cup wins and finals appearances? Come on seventies, you're better than that. That's one of the most ridiculous statements I've ever heard in an ATD. You have absolutely zero evidence to support it, you're just making an assumption because you like the guy so much.

All-star teams went to the best goalies on the best teams. The best goalies on the worst teams were lucky to get AST's when they did, but they still got Hart consideration. You don't think Worters gets on the AST on a better team considering he was a one-man show in New York? I guess I can't convince you. Read the newspaper accounts. The guy was a one-man show. On a better team he would see fewer shots, have more goal support, and of course not have to act like a 3rd defenseman.

Let's not act like Worters had a midget AA team in front of him. Lionel Conacher was there that season, and while Bullet Joe was old, considering his best NHL season came in 1930, I wouldn't call him over the hill at that point. He also had Hall of Famer Billy Burch up front. Now Rayner did have some talent in front of him, but almost every somewhat-talented player had their successes somewhere else, either before the 1950 season, or after. It's also documented that this was just an absolutely horrible team in front of Rayner. Other than simply looking at the team and recognizing few names, on top of seeing he won the Hart despite having a sub .500 record. You can do that for Rayner, and you can also read about how his team was bad offensively and defensively, and he still carried them to game 7 of the SCF.

Also, why list the win percentage to say how good the team is? That's just silly. The Rangers had a win percentage of .479 because of one reason: Rayner. They were below the league average in GA despite allowing 35-40 shots a game, according to one writer. Quite impressive. Also, look at how his back-up did. One game, 8 goals allowed. Kind of shows what kind of team was in front of Rayner for a whole season.

I also find it very odd of you to list the Rangers' .479 win percentage that year to show that Rayner had a good team in front of him. Especially when Worters' New York Americans had a win percentage of .568. So Rayners team had a win percentage of .479, so that's a juggernaut compared to the team who had .568. But yeah, Rayner's was all the team in front of him while that .568 was all Shrimpy.

I already said Rayner was oustanding that year.

As for Hainsworth playing on a way better team, did he? In 1929 his Canadiens scored only 18 more goals than Worters' Americans. Considering the era it's a nice chunk more, but nothing crazy like many would think. Defensively, I won't say that the Americans were better, but they did have the better defenseman between the two teams. There wasn't as much past Mantha as one would think, either, on those Canadiens teams.

18 more goals in a 44 game schedule is 0.41 more goals per game. That adds up. Of course, that was perhaps the lowest-scoring season in history. 0.41 GPG represents 28% of the league average of 1.46 - that is massive!

In today's terms (using 3.00 GPG and 82 games as a benchmark) that is like one team outscoring another by 69 goals.

Then you have shots against. The limited shots against totals we have from three different snapshots from 1927-1931 indicate that the Habs allowed about 30 shots a game compared to 37 allowed by the Americans.

Those two things make a massive difference in a goalie's ability to win games. As discussed, coincidentally recently, in the "Win Threshold" entry at http://brodeurisafraud.blogspot.com.

However, it is incredibly disappointing that you see Duff as nothing more than a second line checker. Beastly playoff numbers, 5 top-20s in goals, and he's nothing more than a second line checker. Also, the whole chemistry thing here with a single player is completely overblown. So Ratelle suddenly wouldn't play as good with a guy who was for all intents and purposes, better at everything than the guy he actually played with in real life? They both played similar games, except Duff was just flat out better. 2nd line checker.. lol. That one is very funny.

Yeah, his height is a tough thing to consider. I always go into this thinking that all players are on an equal playing field based on training, style, etc. And if a player was huge in 1920, he's huge in this, regardless of whether he was only actually 6'2. So I assume that a goaltender from the 30's could learn the modern butterfly style if he was trained in that system. But with this style, it would be near impossible to make it at 5'2. Maybe 5'4 or 5'5 would be a better modern comparison, but I'm not sure you could still effectively pull off the butterfly at that height.

It's one of those anomalies, where we can say a player probably wouldn't be as good now, but that shouldn't take away from what he did back in his era.

Why? He accomplished what he did despite his height. Vezina and Hainsworth played during the same era and stood 5'6, so it's not like he was a shrimp amongst giants.

b/c he would not cover much of the net, especially the top of the net. in worters time, players probably scored over the shoulder or glove far, far less than they do now. worters would also be more vulnerable to screens.

vezina and hainsworth would be small goalies, but worters would be a tiny goalie.

a few days ago, i watched a '59 playoff game between TML and montreal.

dick duff was fast, all over the ice, tenacious on the boards, and won the game in OT.


i saw harvey for the 1st time in that game.
now i understand why everyone talks about his puck control. he often looked very casual. he was by far the best at controlling the puck. the play was often chaotic, but never when harvey had the puck. sometimes he looked like he was walking around, but sometimes he also joined the rush with speed.

i was surprised at something he did while defending, though. he once defended a 2 on 2 rush by getting on his knees. not to block a shot, but to trip the attacker. it worked, but seemed strange.

harvey looked basically like a modern player.

No I'm done with that strategy. Rather than use up a pick for a guy who's main function on my team is to stand in front of the net on the PP I'm going to go in another direction. Plus I want my best players on the ice.

As for size being an issue, I don't think it will. This isn't the 50s-60s where a smaller player could be taken advantage of while on a PP(I can only imagine how brutal the PKers of those days were). There's plenty of small players who will see PP time, guys like Kariya, Fleury, St. Louis, Bentley, etc. Plus, he will have at least one big winger there in Didier Pitre. The other winger, be in Peter Stastny or someone else promoted to the top PP unit(So I can best use Stastny's playmaking), remains to be seen.

PP is not brain surgery. richard knew how to score. that would not change on PP. beliveau missed many games in several seasons, so richard probably took some of his PP time.

I'm not saying he wasn't great, he was, but you still can't say for sure that if he was on a good team he'd have a few more AS team selections. I agree with you completely that there's a great chance he would, but that's not an assessment you can make for sure. Case in point, the current Vancouver Canucks' starting goaltender. He racked up a 2nd team AS selection playing on a very crappy team in Florida. He, of course, was hyped as one of the best in the league, and it was a consensus belief that he'd do amazing things with an actual team in front of him. Then he was traded to Vancouver, who have had a very good defense. How many AS teams has he won since then? Just one other 2nd team. I know a lot has changed since Worters' era, but the concept of a very good goalie looking even
better on a bad team probably hasn't, especially in such a defensive era.

Yes, you did say Rayner was outstanding, but then made his team in 1950 to be great compared to Worters' in 1929, which just wasn't true.

And yes, Worter would without a doubt be the #1 player all time with the Americans. But being the best player the Americans ever had isn't that impressive considering how bad of a franchise they were. Conversely, Rayner would never come close to claiming to be the top Ranger of all time because they are such an old and distinguished franchise who have had many a good player come through their ranks. Rayner, during his era, though, is most certainly the top Ranger(hell, opposing players referred to them as the "Rayngers"), so that's a bit of a wash. I'm not here saying Worters is bad, I had him inches behind Rayner, but if we're gonna pimp shrimp, then I want Bonnie Prince Charlie to get on some of that action as well.

Dodn't realize how bad the league average was. Wow, yeah it's a nice difference then. But, from what I recall, that Canadiens team still wasn't an offensive juggernaut(again I'm going solely off memory so I could easily be wrong. Fuhr played 300+ minutes in the playoffs 12 times. In 9 of those 12 playoffs, his sv% was at or above the league average. The three times it wasnt? 1982 (age 19), 1998 (age 35) and 1999 (age 36). 5 of these 12 times he faced more than the league average shots per game.

Cheevers played 300+ minutes in the playoffs 9 times. In 4 of those 9 playoffs, his sv% was at or above the league average. When it wasn't, he was 30, 36, 37, and 39. He faced above the league average in shots per game in just 2 of 9 seasons.

In total, Cheevers had a career playoff sv% of .9017 versus a league average of .9018. He faced 27.38 shots/60 when the league average was 29.62. Fuhr had a .9026 sv% versus a league average of .8968. He faced 28.59 shots/60 when the league average was 29.21.

For a comparison from roughly the same time, here are Smith's numbers, and a good reason why I have him ahead of both: .9053 vs. .8912 league average, 28.87 SV vs. 29.39 league average.

Regarding Richard on Montreal's power play, from what I've heard Beliveau used his size in front of the net on the power play to score goals, so Richard's lack of size was a disadvantage when replacing Beliveau within that context. Richard was more of a playmaker than a goal scorer on the power play, with 49 goals and 119 assists on the power play in his career. Lots of power plays do well with the centre as a primary playmaker - see Pittsburgh and Sidney Crosby today - and I'm sure Richard could do well on another power play, but Montreal played a different style on their first unit.

Actually, in 1928, of his 19 wins, 6 were SO. 5 were ties. It was better in 1929, where only 4 or so of his 13 shutouts were ties.

I do find it odd, though, that this argument is being used, as it was a trend quite prominent during Hainsworth's 1929 season. On the outsite, Hainsworth had 22 wins and 22 SO, and only 5 were ties(a better rate than Worters as well), so 17 of his 22 wins were because he shut the door. Yet you'll never see Hainsworth get any credit for that, or anything he did in the 1929 season, for that matter.

70's pimping of Worters and criticism of Hainesworth are odd bookends of opinion, considering how much the two had in common. Of course, part of 70's pimping of Worters looks more complimentary than it really is because he just hates Fuhr, Smith and apparently Gardiner and Holecek, as well. The arguments against Fuhr and Smith I sort of understand (though having watched both men play, I disagree) and I do think Gardiner gets a bit overrated, but the placement of Holecek I really don't get.

I like the Worters pick, but I see little reason to rate him above a guy like Eddie Giacomin, another great regular season goalie with a questionable playoff record. Hart voting in that era is just hard to take at anything approaching face value. Red Dutton has more top-5 Hart placements than Nick Lidstrom. And that means what, exactly? That being said, if Worters is as good as Giacomin (which I think he probably is), he's a good pick at this point.

Do you have a similar comparison for regular season numbers? Fuhr's sv% is far from stellar there. Your playoff stats for Cheevers and Fuhr are actually quite similar - especially if we take into account that 3 of Cheevers 'bad' seasons were at quite old age (yeah Fuhr had two too), and that he spent his early 30s in WHA. Fuhr does come out ahead here - but given how much better his teams were...
