All-Time Draft #12​

1). The draft will last 30 rounds. You must draft 2 goalies, 6 defensemen, 12 forwards, a coach and 3 extra picks. In addition, since there will be no MLD12 (as ATD13 will begin in January) each team is to draft six minor leaguers (three forwards, two dmen, a goalie), guys to simply indicate depth in the organization or to be call-ups if desired in a playoff series. For each player called up, one must be sent down (simply indicate on the playoff thread). Your roster thread post should clearly indicate the call-up squad as apart from the main team.

2). The time windows will be tight but reasonable.

12 hour clock for the first two rounds
then 10 hour clock for rounds 3-8,
then 8 hour clock for rounds 9-14,
then 6 hour clock for rounds 15-20,
then 4 hour clock for rounds 21-30 (rounds 25-30 are double picks, so will be 3 rounds)

One hour time window deduction for each skipped pick with a minimum 4 hour clock guaranteed regardless of deductions.

3). Trading is by the THREE TRADES, THREE OBJECTOR RULE. Each team may make a maximum of three trades and any trade which is objected to by at least three teams' GMs will not be accepted, will need to be re-worked or dropped. There will be a 24-hour period to object to a trade, and accordingly, NO TRADING OF PICKS THAT ARE ON THE CLOCK.

4). Regular season rankings MUST BE VOTED ON by at least one GM (if the team is co-GM'd) per team. The penalty if not done is a lowering in the standings because we would also be ranking our own teams in our own divisions (e.g., most teams will rank their own team 1st in their own division; if a team doesn't vote they loose out on a 1st place vote opportunity and hence their team's ranking will be lower than it could have been).

5). In addition to submitting rankings of teams in every division (as per usual), each team is to submit their vote on the following twelve categories concerning the teams in the other division of the same conference. To be clear, regarding the categories: Everyone votes on the following categories for those in the OTHER division of one's own conference. (Note: The results will be tallied and the best of each division will be finalists in a second round of voting after open debate regarding which of the four divisional finalists in each category is the draft league's best.)

The 12 categories to vote on (rank the top three teams in the division 1st, 2nd, 3rd for each):

I. Top scoring line (likely a 1st or 2nd line)
II. Top two-way line (likely a 2nd or 3rd line)
III. Top defensive line (likely a 3rd or 4th line)
IV. Top starting 5 (lw-c-rw-d-d when puck drops to begin game)
V. Top defensemen duo pairing
VI. Top Top-4 core defense
VII. Top blueline overall (all 7 dmen together)
VIII. Top goaltending tandem (sharing regular season workload)
IX. Top powerplay (two 5-men units, coaching)
X. Top penalty kill (two 4-men units, goaltending, coaching)
XI. Top team chemistry (consideration of how skaters gell, how coaching "fits" with team style, etc)
XII. Top call-up squad (the quality and usefulness of the 3 forwards, 2 dmen and 1 goalie on the farm)

So, after votes are tallied, we will have four finalists for each category (the best from each division) and can openly argue thereafter which of them is the best and why, to be followed by another round of voting by all GMs on the four finalists.

6). REGULAR SEASON AND PLAYOFF VOTING TO BE A SET RESPONSIBILITY.

i) VOTING expected of every team, even after being eliminated. In a 32-team draft, there will be 16 teams/8 series starting after the first round, and the 16 just eliminated teams are to vote on the eight series in round two, four series in the divisional finals, two series in the conference finals and the championship final. This is an obligation you take on when joining the all-time draft. (Choosing to have a co-GM makes it easier for a team to meet this obligation.)

ii) Assuming a 32-team draft, all 8 teams per division would play in the opening round (1st vs. 8th, 4th vs. 5th, etc).

iii) The playoffs would last exactly 18 days, as follows:

The first round will last five days (three days discussion, one day voting, one day results).
The second round will last four days (two days discussion, one day voting, one day results).
The third, fourth and fifth rounds will each last three days (18-hour discussion, 24 hour voting, half day results).

The discussion period CAN BE extended IF AND ONLY IF under a revised, extended schedule - as might be discussed following the draft - the playoffs end date to be no later than the first week of December. This draft will not go into the holiday season.

And a few quick reminders:
1) You are REQUIRED to PM the next GM(s) after you pick. If you announce a list pick for a GM, you are still required to PM the next GM.
2) You are expected to send a list to another GM if you don't expect to be around for a while. This draft can move very fast at times. If you're not going to be around for six or eight hours, and you will be picking within the next 10 selections, there is a good chance we will get to your pick within eight hours. This is especially true for weekends and evenings.
3) We do like it when you post extensive information about a player. However, if the next GM, or the next few GMs, are on-line when your pick comes up, announce the pick, and then post the detailed bio afterwards. It's a common courtesy, and it helps keep the draft moving.

He didn't. If he would have continued to drop this round, we would have had to look at him.

To be honest, when we picked Magic Max, the guy I envisioned on the left side was Ovechkin. That combination of speed, skill and aggressiveness would be lights out in this draft. Ovechkin's one of the few LWs who can keep up with Max, and his physical game would open up room for Max, too.

I think there is a fair-sized gap between Max and Doug. Playoffs play a big part in it. Max's playoff record is incredible. Doug's is incomplete. I don't fault Doug. It's not his fault Chicago was a doormat dynasty for most of their first 35 years of existence. But a great playoff record still trumps an incomplete one. But I don't think Doug should be that far behind Delvecchio or Toe Blake.

It is often said that if you were some how able to rank the top players in the history of hockey, a number of the members of the Soviet Red Army would be included near the top. Some would say Alexander Maltsev would top that list.

However there is little doubt that Maltsev ranks among the most talented hockey players ever.

In Soviet League play Alexander played in 530 games from 1967 to 1984. In that time he scored 329 goals while leading Dynamo Moscow to 6 silver medals and 7 bronze medals. The Red Army, stacked with all the best players, almost annually won the gold medal. Dynamo Moscow is generally considered to be Russia's second most successful team.

Maltsev is of course best known to North Americans for his starring role in the 1972 Summit Series where he teamed with CCCP's most dangerous individual player, Valeri Kharlamov. He was a set up man for Kharlamov who was the trigger man. His five assists tied him for second on the Series' assist list. When Kharlamov scored his two goals in game one to shock the Canadians and take a demanding lead, Maltsev, was the guy who set him up.

Alexander Maltsev also starred in the 1976 Canada Cup. He scored 3 goals and 7 assists in 5 games and was the only Russian named to the tournament All Star team.

Like Ovechkin, Maltsev was a creative player who was not afraid to try unique plays in practice or in games. In a game against Dynamo Berlin he was once reported to have scored a goal by flipping the puck over net while he darted out in front to knock the puck passed the goalie baseball style. Valeri Kharlamov, Pavel Bure and Pavel Datsyuk, amongst other Russian stars, have tried to emulate the famous goal, but with no success.

Maltsev was "born to be a hockey player," and it showed. He loved to be on the ice, even if it was just practice. He was said to be "out of sorts" when away from the rink, anxious to get back to it. He seemed to crave the attention he could generate with his game. Retirement from the game was said to be extremely tough for him.

- Maltsev is perhaps the greatest international forward (leaving Tretiak and the defensemen out) in Soviet history. His achievements on international ice outshine all of the players thus far profiled, and there is a good argument that he was superior to Makarov, or at least on the same level.

- given the similarities in overall quality between Maltsev's career and that of Army Line bookends Kharlamov and Mikhailov, it is strange that he goes largely unheralded among North American fans. This is probably due to nothing more profound than a lack of press. Maltsev didn't stand out like Kharlamov in 72 (though his 0-5-5 was good for 9th in scoring in the tournament, tied with Mikhailov, Cournoyer and Park), and was never a member of a famous line, nor Soviet captain like Mikhailov. He played for Dynamo and not for CSKA, and was never a Soviet champion. In short, Maltsev's greatness was quieter than that of his better-known countrymen. There is good reason to believe, however, that he was of similar quality.

Norris Trophy Winner (2009)

At 6 ft 9 in (2.06 m), he is the tallest player ever to play in the NHL.

Chára was drafted 56th overall by the New York Islanders in the 1996 NHL Entry Draft. After four seasons with the Islanders, he was traded to the Ottawa Senators during the 2001 NHL Entry Draft. Chára was part of a package deal with xxxx xxxx and the second overall pick in that year's draft (xxxx xxxx) that sent xxxx xxxx to New York.

As a Senator for four years, Chára emerged as an elite defenseman in the league and more than doubled his previous offensive totals in his first season with Ottawa. In his second season with the team, 2002–03, Chára made his first All-Star Game appearance and recorded the second hardest shot behind Al MacInnis in the skills competition.[2]

The next season, in addition to posting 16 goals and 41 points, Chára recorded the league's third highest plus/minus, behind xxxx xxxx and xxxx xxxx, culminating into his first Norris Trophy nomination. Although he would lose to Scott Niedermayer as the league's best defenseman, he would join Niedermayer on the NHL First All-Star Team.

After the 2004–05 NHL lockout, in which Chára played in the Swedish Elite League for Färjestad BK, he matched his previous NHL season's 16-goal total and increased to 43 points, good enough for NHL Second All-Star Team honours. As Chára did not come to terms on a new contract with Ottawa, he became an unrestricted free agent at the end of 2005–06.

Subsequently, on July 1, 2006, he signed a five-year, $37.5 million contract with the Boston Bruins and was named the team's captain. He became only the third Slovak-born NHL player to become a team captain, after Peter Šťastný of the Quebec Nordiques and Stan Mikita (co-captain) of the Chicago Blackhawks. He was named to the 2007 All-Star Game, his second appearance, in Dallas and scored two goals in an 12–9 Eastern Conference loss. Chára also won the hardest shot segment of the preceding skills competition, clocking a shot at 100.4 mph.

In 2008, he was voted in as a starter in the All-Star Game for the first time in his career and repeated as the winner of the hardest shot competition, recording an even-faster 103.1 mph (166 km/h) on the radar gun.

At the end of the season, Chára received his second nomination for the Norris Trophy after tallying a career-high 17 goals, 34 assists and 51 points, marking the fifth straight season he had either matched or increased his previous season's points total.

In 2008–09, Chára was named to his fourth All-Star Game. As back-to-back champion of the hardest shot competition, Chára set a new Skills Competition record, with a 105.4 mph (169.7 km/h) slapshot. The shot passed xx xxxx previous record-making 105.2 mph (169.3 km/h) slapper from just over a decade earlier. He won the Norris Trophy for the 2008–09 season, beating out xxxx xxxx of the Washington Capitals and Nicklas Lidstrom of the Detroit Red Wings.

Legends of Hockey
In 2009, not only did Zdeno Chara break Nicklas Lidstrom's strangle-hold on the Norris Trophy, but he joined exclusive company by becoming just the third Bruin, along with Hall of Famers Bobby Orr and Ray Bourque to win the prestigious award as the NHL's top defenceman. The Bruins captain anchored a defence corps that allowed the fewest goals against (2.32) in the league and led his club to a first place finish in the Eastern Conference with 116 points, the third best total in franchise history. Also a 1st Team All-Star, Chara set career-high marks for goals (19), assists (31), points (50) and plus/minus (+23). He would lead the Bruins and finish sixth among all players by averaging just over 26 minutes of ice time per game and was a force on the Bruins power play, recording 11 goals for third best among all NHL defencemen.

On the international scene, Chara has represented Slovakia at the World Championships (1999-2001, 2004-2005), Winter Olympics (2006) and the 2004 World Cup of Hockey.

A huge man for his day, Moose protected his zone with his enormous reach, as well as generally putting up around half a point per game in the NHA and PCHA, before they started recording second assists. If I'm reading correctly, he won the Cup 4 times (but this was in the challenge days, so it happened more than once a year).
His calling card for the ATD, however, is 8 FASTs in the PCHA. Split league, yes, but that still likely shakes out to the equivalent of 4 FASTs and 4 SASTs!

I've been in his shoes. In my younger years, I took an ill-advised job at a resort 5 or 6 hours of town for the fall/winter. From the moment I moved there, I was given the run-around- first the bell boy was sick, then another one was on vacation, etc. etc. After two weeks, management admitted the job they'd hired me for was actually not available, but would I like to try house-keeping?

I packed all my stuff into a cab and got outta there. I was broke and had few possessions, and ended up moving in with my dad until I got back on my feet.

I love Chara and I am a huge fan. Also I think he is a good pick at this point. God Bless Canada said Pronger was unique for his size. Chara is a FREAK. Big and mean and good. Not as recklessly violent as Pronger but he can throw down with anyone.

The question mark for me is playoffs. He just really does not have any even good playoffs. He seemed with injured or mentally unable to come through in the playoffs for Ottawa and Boston is the 2nd best team in the NHL and they can't get to the final.

Like I said, I am a huge fan of Chara. But I really do think there are some question marks about him in performing under pressure in big games. Looking at say Ovechkin... with a far shorter career and one playoffs he was unbelievable for them however. Iginla has the Game 7 of the Stanley Cup final... he had a Smythe worthy playoff on his resume. Chara IMO has never even played well in the playoffs let alone exceptionally. I'd love to see him go all Pronger and take the Bruins to the final or the Cup but he has never been close to doing this in Ottawa or Boston.
