1930-31 to 1942-43

All Star voting record for the split LD/RD era.

See this thread for details on how these are calculated.

I'm going on the assumption that there was no point system used to determine the actual first and second team all stars, so there is no official ranking of defensemen from this time that can be used. Therefore, I'm creating my own ranking: 2 points for every 1st Team vote (RD or LD); 1 point for every 2nd Team vote (RD or LD).

One key change from the thread I linked: I decided to consistently apply my point system even in years where it differed from the actual named all star teams. This mainly affects one year, 1942:

1. Earl Seibert (18, 6)
2. Tom Anderson (13, 12)
3. Pat Egan (6, 4)
4. Bucko McDonald (3, 7)
5. Jack Crawford (6, 3)

McDonald was named 2nd Team All Star, seemingly because he got more total votes than Jack Crawford. But any weighted system that you can possibly come up with would rank Jack Crawford 4th in voting points, so that is how this system ranks him now.

The other year affected is 1933-34, when Earl Seibert and Eddie Shore tied in 1st and 2nd Team votes, and Shore was awarded the 2nd Team spot on a tiebreaker because he got more of his votes at RD. My system ranks both Seibert and Shore as 4th in AS voting for 1933-34.

Here are the results for the time period. I'm only noting a tie when it's a tie for first.

Minimum requirement: At least 2 total votes

Important note: There are inconsistencies in the records for 1934-35, so the rankings may change slightly if more sources are found.

I'm including all these years together, since each voting method was used for such a short period of time.

1943-44 to 45-46

Writers vote 1st and 2nd Team, weighted to give each city equal voting power

Minimum requirement:1 1st place vote, or 2 2nd place votes

1946-47 to 1949-50

6 NHL coaches voted, 3-2-1 format, coaches can't vote for own players

Minimum requirement: none. With only 5 possible votes per player, each vote counts a lot, and these are NHL coaches, not potentially homer writers.

Important note: We only have the top 6 for 48-49.

1950-51 to 1952-53

Writers vote 1st, 2nd, 3rd Team, 3-2-1 format, probably still weighted to give each city equal voting powers

Important note: We only have the top 4 for all three of these years (50-51, 51-52, 52-53).

1953-54 to 1967-68

Separate votes for 1st and 2nd half of the season added together

Minimum requirement: at least 1 voting point.

Important note: We only have the top 5 for 54-55, 57-58, 58-59. We only have the top 7 for 59-60 and top 8 for 61-62. When a player received more than one Norris votes in a year in which we have incomplete All-Star records for him, I indicated his AS finish with a "?"

Everything we have from 1930-31 to 1967-68 is included in either Post 1, 2, or 3 of this thread. I may or may not get around to compiling the voting records from the modern voting system that has been in place since 1968-69.

We have complete records for every year but 1948-49 (top 6), 1950-51 (top 4), 1951-52 (top 4), 1952-53 (top 4), 1954-55 (top 5), 1957-58 (top 5), 1958-59 (top 5), 1959-60 (top 7), and 1961-62 (top 8).

If using these threads to find the complete record for a defenseman, remember that if his career spans more than the time period covered by one of the posts, his might have votes that aren't taken into account by that post.

This is great work, TDMM. It might also be useful to work out some system for how we should handle all-star game appearances for the years without complete AST voting records.

I think it might be useful to figure out exactly how the ASGs were selected in every year and compile a list every ASG every defenseman played in - but that's a huge project itself.

As for what you're saying, that would only apply to 1949, 1951, 1952, and 1953, correct?

It's relatively easy to assume when a guy got Norris votes that he'd probably also get AS votes since it was the same group of voters and they got to put more names on the AS ballots than the Norris ballots. I think it's something of a reach to assume that playing in an All Star game would necessarily mean Post-season All-Star votes in the same year, but it might be more reasonable than the alternative - ignoring lesser star defensemen in those 4 years entirely.
