What if the Canes see someone on the exposed list they would like to have and strike a deal with the Kraken to draft said player and then trade him to the Hurricanes for a package that would be more favorable to the canes than it would be to make the trade straight up.

I saw a random post on the Gabriel Landeskog thread on the trade rumors board suggesting the Hurricanes should sign Landeskog. I assume he will re-sign in Colorado. On the off-chance that he doesn't, I'd rather have Landeskog on the team than Dougie for the same price and term.

I'm setting up my expectations to lose Dougie and not sign anyone big. In the event that we do, it makes sense to save cap room here and there by dealing Foegele and possibly not re-signing Brock McGinn.

I don't know, all this savings talk makes me think of the guy who had his horse die on him just when he had managed to teach it not to eat.

It only matters for the veteran requirement.

Carolina is already covered there with Fast and Lorentz under contract and meeting the games played minimums for a veteran forward under contract.

Seattle can still take Foegele whether he’s been offered a QO yet or not, just as they can draft a pending UFA and not sign him. They need to have a minimum roster and cap hit but they can punt on a pick or 2.
Right but the question was exposing not about requiring protection

I like Foegele overall..he does bring hustle, speed, solid PKer, draws penalties, tenacious...if he could just put it all together he'd be an ideal middle-6 guy. Do I think he's worth $2.25-2.5M...yes. Do I think he's worth it for the Canes already near the cap in flat-cap world...no.

You are required to expose at least 2 veteran forwards, 1 veteran D, and 1 goalie. The forwards and D must be under contract for 21-22 to meet this requirement. (For goalie an RFA is sufficient.)

Foegele would not qualify as a veteran for this rule even with a QO. Lorentz and Fast do, so Carolina has met that minimum.

Yep it would require an actual contract which was the original question

If you pay Landeskog $8+ million then you better be sure that he is the missing piece for this window. I like him a lot as a player, but he would like TB's Coleman addition on steroids with no room for error.

I think you’d be disappointed if that happened. I like Landy a lot and he’s a good compliment to good players but Dougie is a bigger factor in games. I’d hardly be upset if we got Landy though.

Honestly I'm not impressed with Fast. I think he's okay at a bunch but not good at anything.

His namesake is also a lie. I'd rather trade Fast and keep Foegele who is younger, faster, more physical, and can PK too.

Foegele also shows some flashes I never saw from Fast.

Well first, I don't agree with you on Fast. He's a pretty nice piece for any bottom-6, knows his role on a team, and is locked in at a good cap hit for 2 more years. But if Foegele is requesting a trade for a top-6 opportunity, as rumored, then it's the right thing for both sides to get the request fulfilled before Seattle makes their picks.

Exactly. Putting him with Necas and Tro would be pretty sick though

I just think it’s important to keep your rfa’s and let your ufa’s go when they’re depth players. Foegele is part of this build and even if he never takes a big step can be a valuable player. He feels like the one you make the effort to keep. If we save some money on him, the ufa’s and still don’t keep Dougie it hurts I think. I know we have a model, and I think it’s not the worst idea at its heart I’m just not convinced I’m going to be a fan of it long term yet.

Nah. Canes will pursue a contract swap before considering a buyout. This isn't a club that likes to buyout players outside of sweeteners. Considering that, IMO, Seattle is going to take Skjei, it may not even be the correct move to trade him unless you know that someone like Marcus Pettersson or Hampus Lindholm is on the trade market (again, though, this is TheRillestPaulFenton, so you know that my views are sometimes going to be out on an island).

One thing that would not shock me that much is if Carolina gets in on Tyler Johnson. His contract expires right when Aho/Pesce/Turbo are due, he could vastly improve our 3rd line and weaken Tampa's for a few years, and if Seattle is asking for the moon and the stars (1st + good prospect) in order to take his contract, maybe the Canes can come in and ask for "just" the moon (aka. the 1st) to take the contract.

Example: The Silence From the Media on Dougie Makes Me Excited - CapFriendly - NHL Salary Caps

That's a worse take/idea than letting Skjei get taken in the ED but keeping Gards (assuming we don't resign Doogie). We're debating who to keep of Foegele, McGinn, & Marty, why would we be in on TJ? He's more expensive and not much (if at all) better these days...you could keep 2 for less $$ than TJ even with retention

Because of the pick. I want that extra first! I also think TJ is a better player than those three and actually plays a decent centerman's game.

We're trying to compete, why would we waste cap on a shit contract for draft picks?

Yes, I know that we're competing. I also think it's smart to pursue moves that dramatically weaken Tampa Bay. What better way to do it than to pry first round picks from them and still get a decent player for your troubles, especially if said player is not going to affect the Aho/Pesce/Turbo situation? Note that I'm well aware that my opinions are on an island, but logically, I'd rather have TJ and a shiny 2022 1st than Foegele/McGinn/Marty, especially because Foegele apparently WANTS a trade and a top-6 spot.

How does getting a 1st for taking Tyler Johnson's contract "dramatically weaken" Tampa? If anything, it helps them because it allows them to keep a superior player (Gourde, Killorn, Palat etc.).
