Not quite accurate. We love our sports in Canada too (huge NFL following, among others) but we just obsess about hockey.
Forget pro sports..

Town level, High school, college they pack in crowds - sure NHL packs it in but does CEGEP? university? Not really

When I referred to hockey I meant there is interest at all levels including international competitions that pit our best against others. Of course, we don’t have that level of commitment toward other sports but we do have it for hockey.

Plus, why are you comparing a country that has almost 10 times the population as Canada when the sheer number of inhabitants for the US make it far more likely for them to have such a high strung level of interest in so many different sports?

We’re not competing with the US, they do what they do and we do our thing.

The original post was in reply to “Americans stealing basketball which was founded at McGill” - they didn’t steal anything, they simply supported & grew it because sports supporting from grassroots is embedded in US culture, in small towns & big city

All sports: swimming, lacrosse, football, baseball, basketball, etc.

To which you added a 2nd statement that made a wide generalization: “Being a sports fan is part of American culture… not so much in Canada”

What does your second statement have anything to do with the US “stealing” a sport? You made a blanket statement whereby you panned Canada’s support of sports — I merely addressed that second generalization.

As Estimated Prophet posted - the tribal aspect of U.S. society extends to all aspects of life including sports, hence, the extreme focus in all organized sports elementary school level through college - that focus also includes sizable attendance at amateur sporting events.

As an example they sell out NHL arenas for high school hockey tournaments regularly let alone state / college tournaments.

Mtl can’t sell out Bell Centre for WJC, let alone other amateur sporting events or non Habs events. It’s not good or bad, one is not better than another, supporting sports teams from amateur to pro is just a difference in cultural mindset & that difference led to creation of interest in basketball when James Naismith moved from Mtl to Springfield College and later to U of Kansas where he started the Jayhawks basketball program

When does the stadium ever get used? Besides the Metallica concert, when was it last even used??

MLB said they wouldn't permit a baseball team to play there again, which is why we almost had a new stadium in Point Saint Charles... so why the hell are we "fixing" it?

Wow...................just wow.
By all acount it's a useless building, so why fix it?

Surely it can be torn down cheaper than that...........seriously?
This is the most idiotic decision ever. Not only a waste of money but the location is horrible and it is awful for live show, sports and event.

A complete waste of public funds.

Apparently cost of demolishing the Big O is now up to $2B

Proulx says demolishing the stadium would cost $2 billion and would be complicated by the fact that the métro runs under the structure and because several businesses lease office space in the stadium’s tower.

As for expected impact & revenues:

The government predicts that, with its new roof, the stadium will attract larger events, possibly generating as much as $1.5 billion from tourism and other sources over 10 years.

It also expects to make $61 million in gross revenue per year from the Olympic Park, while the stadium itself could generate tax revenues of more than $20 million per year.

If you're gonna invest that much money, why not just build a new stadium. Makes no sense to keep spending money into a venue that won't attract a major league tenant
In quebec the cement mafia rules. None of this is driven by fan needs (what a horrible stadium for pro sports wtf). The success is measured in budget and deadlines, like the rem. Whether no-one would use or if using it sucks it is not a concern in the slightest. I would not be surprised if they drop columns from the ring that occlude the view for half the fans and congratulate themselves on a job well done. Disgusting.
