so I see 9 quite good trades and 5 I would grade as bad... around 50 moves that really didn't make a difference.

I am putting together a more indepth look at his oiler time. people forget the puke horrible team he inherited. it probably doesn't matter. he was never a likable person. now that he has a taint on him, the truth isn't going to set him free. but, I wish people were more fair.

it might be interesting to note neely was hired in june of 2010... chiarellis record in trades before that was perfect. theres really no doubt that neely wanted to get control of the team and inheriting a gm that wasn't his man didn't suit him. the question will exist, how much did neely interfere in Chiarelli's moves after the hire?

all in all, these guys gave us our only cup win in the past 45 years so they deserve our cheer.

Wheeler trade was a win. Just a short-term one. Peverely was the better player from 2011-2013 and the results are irrefutable.

Kaberle was a lot better to have in the lineup than Hnidy, Kampfer or Colby Cohen on the way to the Cup. That trade was more of a push. You can't discount the Cup win that resulted. Kaberle was underwhelming...not useless. They overpaid but he was good depth to have and it worked out well.

Brett Connolly trade was a loss.

Seguin trade was a loss, but not ----- bad. probably ---

They got a 30 goal/70pt 2 way winger in Ericsson, and what turned out to be a very good player in Smith. You cant hold it against Chiarelli that he couldnt predict the future and see Scott scrambling Loui's noggin on a cheapshot.

Kessel trade is a ** or *** win. They didnt have the space to pay his demand and were very much in danger of losing him to an offer sheet. Getting 2 unprotected 1sts from a bad team is almost always a win. Especially since they turned out to be #2 and #9 overall

also, the Boychuk and Soderberg trades are 5* wins

--------------------------------------
1/ a 7th round pick for petr tenkrat -worth a shot.
2/ andrew raycroft for the rights to tuuka rask {*****} dynamite
3/ trade up a 4th and 5th to draft brad marchand in 3rd {******} dynamite
4/ nick boyton and a 4th for paul mara and a 3rd - they wanted Mara for a long time - good on paper after lockout.
5/ 3rd round pick for stanslav chistov - swing and fouled out
6/ tyler redenbach for philippe sauve - ankle injuries and couldn't stay healthy - not on player just bad luck
7/ wade brookbank for futures - clearing deck
8/ yan stastny for a 5th - clearing deck - Yan was a warm body in NHL
9/ milan jucina for a 3rd {later used to draft tj brodie} - warm body in WAS - promise but no product
10/ kris versteeg for Brandon bochenski - ok, then bad after regimen change and muscling up - an OTT guy (scouting force feed?)
11/ wayne primeau and brad stuart and the pick that became tj brodie - Stuart was bailing and Wayne was a warm body. Ference and Chuck brought more to the team.
for andrew ference and chuck kobasew
12/ paul mara for Aaron ward - good until that cheap shot by Walker. Aaron was definitely part of the culture shift in BOS after Lewis debacle. Win
13/ brad boyes for Dennis wideman - Win -) Boyes had that good year under Lewis with Bernie and Sturm then regressed. Good
14/ 5th round pick {used to draft jamie benn} for Adam mcquaid - good value for a 5th
15/ peter kalus and a 4th for Manny fernandez - Jennings trophy - enough said
16/ shean donovan for Peter schaefer - another OTT pro scout mess - Peter no longer had that puck protect game
17/ hannu toivonen for carl soderberg {****} - win for the Sasquatch
18/ ben walter and a second for petteri nokelainen - pricey and never panned out - 3rd or 4th and no issue but 2nd hurts.
19/ mark mowers for brett skinner and Nathan saunders - milk for eggs, eggs for milk,
20/ nate dicasmirro and a 5th for alex auld - needed a backup
21/ brandon bochenski and a 4th for shane hnidy and a 6th - fair as >Shane added some emotion and a filler on D when Brandon was done..
22/johnathan sigalet for matt marquardt - MS syndrome
23/ trade up to draft jamie arniel - miss
24/ matt hendricks for johnny boychuk {****} dynamite but took a few years
25/ pascal pelletier for martin st pierre - caution for Q scorers with long sticks - Chicago grabbed our Karma for Debrincat
26/ andrew alberts for a 3rd and ned lukacevic - he was plateauing at a N6 - fav
27/ matt lashoff and martins karsums for mark recchi and a second {****} dynamite
28/ petteri nokelainen for Steve montadore - depth for depth
29/ aaron ward for patrick eaves and a 4th round pick - more OTT old boy stuff
30/ phil kessel for picks that become seguin/hamilton/knight - dynamite but luck of the draw
31/ chuck kobasew for a second round pick that becomes Alexander khokhlachev - value good, bad pick
32/ 3rd round pick for Daniel paille - Merlot was tops
33/ matt marquardt for cody wild - musical chairs
34/ 4th round pick for Steven kampfer - depth deal, ok
35/ bron bitz, craig weller and 2nd pick used to chose alexander petrovic for dennis seidenberg and matt bartowski {****} dynamite
36/ derek morris for a 3rd round pick - was on last legs, 2nd would have been better but market calls price..
37/ dennos wideman, 1st, 3rd for gregory campbell and nathan horton {****} dynamite until the "hit" and off ice crap that made Horton walk. Started the downward trend with Lucic when he left...
38/johan mattsson for zach trottman} - some promise there in early days
39/ vladimir sobotka for david warsofsky {--} no sizzle JAG's .. and I like SOB but he isn't a core player...
40/ matt hunwick for colby cohen {--} no sizzle JAG's
41/ jordan knackstedt and jeff lovecchio for sean zimmerman and 7th - shows the depth they had at the time...
42/ levi nelson for juraj simek- shows the depth they had at the time...
43/ marco sturm for futures - blown knee - cap move
44/ second round pick for chris kelly {***} dynamite move - not everything is score sheet
45/ mark stuart and blake wheeler for rich peverly and boris valabik {-----}. good short term, bad long term. Won a cup...
46/ tomas karberle for joe colborn, a first that was used on rickard rakell, and a second {---}good short term, bad long term. Won a cup...
47/ brian mcgrattan and sean zimmerman for stephane chaput and david laliberte - who???
48/ jeff penner for anton khudobin {***}. depth thinking Khudo could be a Timmy light. Not quite but decent N2
49/ 4th round pick for Joe corvo - waste and too much baggage to come back to BOS...
50/ yannick riendeau and marc cantin for mike mottaau and Brian rolston - Brian was better first time around - OK value
51/ steven kampfer for greg zanon - moves for size..
52/ yuri alexandrov for futures - last place in cute testing - smart player just not committed...
53/ zach hamil for chris bourque - as Chia said, smart stick (wtf...) for a tweener.
54/ benoit pouliot for michael ouellet and a 5th - recoup for a UFA who wasn't going to sign anyway...
55/ tim thomas for nothing - TT was off the reservation so unlikely to snag anything as he wasn't committed to coming back.
56/ cody payne, lane macdermid and a pick for jaromir jagr
57/ maxime sauve for rob flick - shot in the dark but neither played NHL minutes so ...
58/ 7th round pick for wade redden - could do worse for a 7th even if just a pom pom girl at that stage in his career.
59/ the trade that was bad
seguin, peverley,buttom
for eriksson, morrow, smith, fraser {-----} bad not getting at least a first out of it....
60/ carter camper for Blake parlett - who??
61/ 3rd round pick for andrej meszaros - playoff depth that didn't work out - ok
62/ johnny boychuk for 2 second round picks and a 3rd round pick - OK value but horrible timing as we all know
63/ jared knight for zack phillips - anything for Jared given his trajectory is a positive
64/ jordan caron and 6th for maxime talbot and Paul carey - fair value at the time
65/ two second round picks for brett Connolly - bad trade - should have been one second and a warm body - Brett was OK for a bottom 6 but never got into a role and could have done better - I always thought he'd be a player and I think this was Chia enamoured with draft status and size, thinking he got a steal to load up a heavy roster. Miss for the price...

so I see 9 quite good trades and 5 I would grade as bad... around 50 moves that really didn't make a difference.

Id grade the Ference trade higher, he was a huge part of that group

and the Peverly Trade, I know gets a lot of flak due to Wheeler being an assist machine now a days but all things considered, the way peverly played during the cup run? I'd do it again in a heartbeat.

The contract after the trade, no, no, kill it with fire.
