The Toronto game flipped a switch inside Ovechkin. He miraculously has remembered how to handle the puck at the NHL level and is skating hard again. Hasn't done that since 14-15 when he was runner-up for the Hart. Not sure how this has happened but if (probably a big if, but still) he plays like this the rest of the way then he will have no problem hitting 50.

I am hoping more for the 7th Richard for OV than for another 50-goal season, both because OV probably will not need 50 to win it and because tying Bobby Hull for most goal-scoring titles ever (btw, Hull was tied for one of them) is an unbelievably huge achievement.

I did predict around 40 to 45 before the season started so I am going to stick to that

I hope he has the balls to great Gretzyk's record. Forget respect past legends. Play until your 43 and become the undisputed best goal scorer ever.

Yes, this is definitely one of the harder records to break in hockey. If Bossy, Gretzky, and Lemieux couldn't do it, it must be difficult. The thing with goal scoring is that it usually erodes quickly after the mid 20's.

And the hate he gets from dumb uninformed fans is amazing.

"Hur dur, do it in the playoffs, loser!"

It seems that a distinguishing trait of the best goal-scorers in history is that they defy this rule.
Bobby Hull had his best goal-scoring season (which is allegedly the best goal-scoring season in history) at 28, and won his last goal-scoring title at 30.
Maurice Richard last goal-scoring title came at the age of 33, and he followed that up by two strong 2nd places.
Gordie Howe's last goal-scoring title came at the age of 34, and he had three strong top5 finishes in goals after that.
It seems that Ovechkin is not already 32, he is only 32 :)

Yes it is. But Mike Bossy, whom he just passed, took something like 200 less games to reach about the same amount he has right now.

2005-2017 Washington Capitals GPG is 2.98, second place in the league
1977-1986 New York Islanders GPG is 4.15 (28% higher than now), third place in the league

Bossy scored 17.24% of all NYI goals
Ovechkin scored 19.8% of all WSH goals

Those are very nice stats. Again, Im not trying to take anything away from Ovi. Just responded to someone who said "Wow, Ovi did that in like 700+ games less than Recchi"

Well it's important to note that scoring levels were drastically different when Bossy played. As a goal-scorer OV passed Bossy long time ago.

Then why wasn't the whole Islanders team in the top 25 all time scorers ? While I agree that more goals were scored in Bossy's time, its still 200 games less. Saying he passed Bossy a LONG time ago is just delusional IMO

And too think people thought he was done after last year's playoffs. Ovi is the greatest goal scorer of all time.

Comparing their scoring finishes Ovechkin has a massive advantage. At the very least Ovechkin undeniably went ahead was his latest Rocket but in all honestly it probably was his 5th that sealed that deal. Nothing delusional in that. Bossy was great goal-scorer but he didn't dominate his peers in that regard. He was just incredibly consistent. Adjusting to scoring levels he was the equivalent of 45-50 goal scorer throughout his career. Twice he led the league in goals and once he was fist in GPG. Only once was he bested by Gretzky alone so even if we might count Gretzky out as an outlier Bossy still led the league in goals three times compared to OV's 6. Both all time great scorers but Ovechkin is significantly ahead and has been a while.
