End of an era - Pujols has been a fixture since I started paying attention to baseball in detail.

never thought his career avg would dip below .300 but it currently sits at .298

'd think the Angels told him his playing time would be severely reduced and he asked to be Released.

I wonder if anyone has interest in him and vice versa. He's kinda just awful at this point though.

Shame he didn't age so well. Despite being one the best to ever do it, it feels like he's been a replacement player for the past decade.

he should go to detroit to play with cabrera, who like pujols, is also going out on depressing terms

has there ever been another player whose career was as night and day as pujols? with STL he was one of the greatest offensive players of all time. he gets to anaheim and immediately becomes a replacement level player for virtually his entire stint there

He was far from immediately a replacement level player in Los Angeles

Reality is Pujols had some productive years in Los Angeles but was far cry from who he was in St Louis and declined while in Los Angeles

Ken Griffey Jr would be a more recent example of a guy leaving one place as best in league to being not as productive and eventually a shadow of his former self

Pujols was only a replacement level player for half of his Angels' stint. He was average to above-average the first five years there.

Griffey is pretty similar - good to great player every year with the Mariners (not quite as good as his reputation was, but still a superb peak and good every year), one good year with the Reds, and turns into an injury-plagued pumpkin as an above-average (but not excellent) hitter who doesn't belong in the field but is stuck in a non-DH league.

Age started catching up to Pujols in Anaheim, who is probably older than his official record shows. At least that has been the long-standing rumor.

I don't know why he would ask to be released though. That means he doesn't get paid the rest of his year's salary, correct?

He isn't going to get playing time anywhere else. So why not just collect the last of that big annual salary and sit?

he still gets paid the rest of his '21 salary regardless. the paycheck will just come from a different team if he does get picked up

It speaks volume to how incredible Pujols was where even after almost a decade of shitty play he's still a sure fire hall of famer.

Edit: And it took him 10 years of shitty play to get his batting average to dip below .300. Insanity.
