After 82 games with the Islanders it's time to admit that Doug Weight is elite at coaching

So when Doug Weight took over as coach for the Islanders many here on HF Boards had their doubts on if he could get it done. The Islanders as a team was one big mess and Tavares had clearly lost his smile. Many saw Weight as a Gretzky/ Housley like coach that just got his job because he was good at putting up points back in the day. But 82 games and almost a year later Doug Weight is finally proving everybody wrong.

All you have to do is just look at the numbers. Tavares who was lost before that is back on track with 34+50=84 Points in just 77 games, a 89 Point pace if he wouldn't have missed 5 games. That would be a career high and up a massive 23 Points from the 66 Tavares put up as a whole last year. Because of Doug Weight, John Tavares will most likely make a few extra million a year on his next contract.

Doug Weight's biggest impact however has been Josh Bailey. Bailey is best known for being 4th in scoring right now, but many don't know that he's actually been in the NHL since 2008-09. Before Doug Weight took over as coach Josh Bailey was basically a poor man's Jussi Jokinen at best. But a year later and Doug Weight has turned him into a star with 19+58=77 Points in 82 games. If everything goes right for Josh Bailey moving forward, he's going to have a good shot at becomming the most overpaid hockey player of all time and it's all thanks to Doug Weight.

But it doesn't stop there, Doug Weight has also managed to turn some guy named Anders Lee into a 40+ goal scorer. Before Doug Weight took over as coach this guy's career high was a fluke 25 goal season in 2014-15, but in 81 games with Doug Weight he scored 43 goals. Nick Leddy has also been turned into a top offensive Dman under Weight with 10+43=53 Points in 82 games. Those 50+ point Dmen don't grow on trees anymore. Oh and Andrew Ladd also seems to have returned to normal after Winnipeg ruined him, as he's put up 24 goals in 79 games with Weight. Plus we can't forget about Mathew Barzal this season. Nobody really expected anything from this kid but Doug Weight has been able to knock some star potential into this rookie as he's put up 13+24=37 points in just 42 games.

Sure some of you might point out that the Islanders are on a losing streak right now, but it's usually good to get your losing streak out of the way in January so you'll be ready for the playoffs.

So what do you guys think of Doug Weight as a coach? Is he underrated? Has he screwed over the Islanders with his supreme coaching, as Tavares, Bailey, Lee, Leddy and Barzal are all going to get big Money deals out of it?

This belongs with the "Is John Chayka A Top 3 GM?" thread.
How can you be elite as a coach if you've accomplished nothing? They are out of a playoff spot right now and the ship is sinking.

Did you even read what I wrote?! Doug Weigth has basically turned Tavares back into a star, turned Leddy into a top Dman, and made stars out of Lee, Bailey and Barzal. He's basically turned the whole offense around and the Islanders are only a few wins away from making the playoffs right now. They'll not just make the playoffs this year, but they'll make it past the second round this time!

NYI are 22nd in the standings with two more games played than the two teams behind and in front of them.... Every team above them in the standings has a better goal differential then them aswell.

Well the Islanders have an easier Schedule comming up the rest of the season with more home games too. And last year Dough Weight had a 24-12-4 record in the 40 games he coached. A similar result in this seasons last 40 games will be more than enough to make the playoffs!

The Islanders are 22nd in the league in winning%, 10th in the East, have by a substantial margin the worst defensive record in the entire in NHL and 2nd worst penalty killing record.

Their offense certainly seems have gotten a major boost and they have an array of offensive cogs centered by a true superstar in Tavares and a brilliant youngster in Barzal - but their track record is that of the single most one-dimensional team in the NHL right now. While the Halak/Greiss tandem in net is not the fault of Weight - the defensive unit and team defense as a whole has a lot to work on. And that falls on Weight and his staff to address. Not sure why we need to anoint him as anything right now other than a young head coach with a clearly excellent offensive mind who is showing promise but with a lot of room for growth and whose team is very clearly excellent on one side of the ice and very clearly highly flawed on the other.

The growth of Barzal, challenging around the fringes of the playoff picture (either just getting in or just on the outside) and re-signing Tavares would constitute a monumentally excellent season for the Islanders, I'm not sure why there should be pressure for anything more than that.

Teams get a bump typically from new coaches. The honeymoon period has ended.

Yeah, the timing is strange indeed. They are just terrible.
Struggling team gets a brief boost after a coaching change and then falls back down to earth...Never seen that one before..

It's no weird timing, I've been planning this thread since February. It's been 82 games, aka a full regular season. Thereby you can evaluate every player without relying too much on pace, like Crosby fans usually do...

Crosby has the 6th highest PPG in NHL history...

I liked the Josh Bailey, "poor mans Jussi Jokinen" part.

I also liked how Lee scored had a "fluke" season with 25 goals, but all goals after that are legit because Weight.

All that aside, i don't think Weight is a bad coach for the Islanders. After he took over i've seen the Isles play the way i always wanted to see them play but never did when Capuano was there. Right now i think it's just personnel issue more than anything.

You can't expect to win many hockey games with 1 top 4 dman and Halak/Greiss as your goalies. They desperately need Boychuk/De Haan back and hope one of their goalies catches fire or look elsewhere.

Islanders desperately need to trade for Lehner. He's the real deal. You can tell there's no way he's going to want to re-sign in Buffalo so the Sabres might as well try and recover the first round pick they lost to get him in the first place.
