I've mentioned this in a couple threads lately. I think he would be a tremendous addition if we could lure him in, I'd love to see them replace both Mac-T and Howson with Burke. He has spent a lot of time working under and learning from Don Maloney, who in my opinion is one of the best GM's in the league. Maloney has pretty consistently iced a competitive team with nothing for payroll and an uncertain franchise future. He's been excellent at identifying the type of players this team sorely needs.
Add in the fact that Burke has spent a lot of time around Dave Tippett, a real good coach who is known for getting the most out of players and teams. A quote that I love from a Tippett interview I heard years ago was soothing along the lines of "It's the 3 T's. First you Train a player to do play a specific role, if he can't perform that role, then you Transfer him to a different role and if he can't perform that role then really there is no use for that player on your team so you Trade him. For too long this team has tried to develop a system and a style of play moulded to the players they have when really we need to be looking at the systems and styles that are successful around the league. If our players can't alter their game to fit into that style then we move them out for players who can and will.
On top of working with guys like Maloney and Tippett for years he's also been a goalie guru, having great success with big goalies such as Bryzgalov, Smith, Dubnyk. He would be a real asset to our rookie goalie coach and a guy like Anders Nilsson.
Now Burke left Arizona because he didn't see any room for advancement there and there was a couple GM jobs and the Hockey Canada job he thought he might have a chance at. Nothing panned out for him and he ended up as a scout for the Euro team in the World Cup of Hockey. The guy is obviously angling for a GM job and I think here being Assistant GM to Chiarelli and helping turn the team around could be a springboard to a GM's job for him in the next couple of years. I really think it's a win win for Burke and the Oilers to get him in here.
Edit: Forgot to add this but here is a link to a story on what Burke has been up to since his exit from Arizona
