PRE-GAME SKATE:
Bob Kelly is absent from the ice and not in the starting line-up for tonight's tilt. Rumour has it the Nuggets made it a precondition of their participation, as the Hound Dog is a balls-to-the-wall Broadstreet Bully who has no low gear and who surely would have looked to have given the Soviets in the Dawson City line-up the same sort of roughing up he gave the Red Army back in Philly's 1975 win.
In his place for Halifax will be d/lw HHOFer George Richardson, who starred at left wing for the 14th Regiment of Kingston hockey team that went on to the Ontario Hockey Association finals three consecutive years from 1907 to '09. He is a real gentleman and brings brilliant stickhandling and a scoring presence to an Eurekas! third line that sports two Memorial Cup champs: three-time Stanley Cup winner Billy "Hinky" Harris and three-time Stanley Cup finalist, one-time winner Chico Maki.
Dawson City has made no changes to its starting line-up.

Eureka! An Early Goal
The Arnott line scores on their second shift of the first period and is anyone surprised? With 212 NHL playoff points between them, these three know how to score when it matters most. Their playoff scoring experience far exceeds any other line in this game, and in fact in this draft league. The play started on a turnover in the Halifax end as Juneau intercepted a Stumpel pass and began a two-on-one surge the other way with Sykora streaking up the right side. Nugget captain Gut took away the pass and so Juneau pulled up short and passed to Arnott who joined the play late, only Jason quickly flicked the puck off the right boards to Petr and just before a backchecking Johnson arrived, the right winger wristed the puck to the big centreman in the crease for a tip in goal that Hrudey only got a piece of.

Dawson City sees Russians even it up
If goal scoring at the highest level of competition were the sole criteria of all-time worth, then Nugget Sergei Svetlov would be playing in a higher level of competition. Two times top-5 in Soviet league scoring, the right winger scores the early tying goal tonight to go with his 57 goals for the Soviet national team in the eighties, including some beauts in Canada Cup and Olympic play. An assist goes to his longtime pivot, Semenov, himself a two-time first team all-star in the Soviet league and the second assist to defenseman Starikov, a mainstay on the great Soviet teams of the eighties with an impressive 186 international starts.

A Real Nugget Strikes
The lead goes to the Yukon boys thanks to a slapper from Alf Pike, the rookie key contributor to the Rangers 1940 Stanley Cup victory with three timely goals, two of them tying goals in wins and one an overtime tally. Pike scored tonight on a breathtaking deke and pass play by Real Chevrefils. A two-time Stanley Cup finalist from his days in Boston, Chevy turned on the wheels and danced past two Halifax players before sliding the puck past a sprawling Zinger to Pike at the far post.

The first period ends Dawson City up 2-1 and the middle frame is scoreless as the Nuggets' third and fourth lines see more time at even strength and the penalty kill holds up despite three penalties against. Edmond Bouchard shines with Bell and Pike, Edmond being the left wing/defenseman who was once valued so much that he was traded in 1922 to the Hamilton Tigers for Joe Malone and Bert Corbeau, a laughable move until Bouchard went on to lead the NHL in assists the following season. Bouchard is playing well with his conteporary, Billy Bell, the solid checking right winger/centre who won two championships with Montreal, retiring after the 1924 Stanley Cup. The Nuggets third line also is having success, Drouin keeping his emotions in check and Brydson battling along the boards as Erixon plays a safe, defensive game as the third man back. The Eurekas! manage only 7 shots in the second period, four of those with the man advantage.

Mark Johnson extends the Nuggets lead
Everyone knows Mark Johnson for scoring against Tretiak and Myshkin but few remember he went on to score 11 tourney points in all, including the winner against Finland in the final. The two-time NCAA All-American played in eight world championships and three Canada Cups, including 5 points in 6 games in the '84 Canada Cup. In 1988 he jed the Devils in playoff scoring with 10 goals and 18 points as New Jersey came within one game of the Stanley Cup finals. So it should be no surprise that Johnson gets an unassisted goal midway through the third period of this match-up on a partially screened rifle shot top left corner, making it a 3-1 game with 10:45 remaining.

Shepelev scores twice
Sergei Shepelev famously scored hat tricks against Canada and the Czechs in the '81 Canada Cup and was central in three world championship gold medals over a 4-year peak period rarely matched in international competition. His two goals tonight reflect his opportunistic style of play, always looking for the quick break, cheating on his defensive assignment when he anticipates the turning tide. His first goal of the night is on a clean breakaway after Guryshev bumped Anisin off the puck and fed it center ice. The tying goal was a tic-tac-toe play with Skvortsov that frankly embarrassed Bob Trapp, and rumour has it the blueliner was headed back to one of the minor leagues he spent the majority of his playing career in. This game is tied with two minutes remaining.

Game over!
Bryan Murray and Jacques Martin are both top-10 all-time in NHL games won with over 500 victories each but they will have to settle for a tie tonight as both teams agree to end it after regulation a 3-3 final. Officially each team will go down as 3rd in the AAA11 draft challenge playoff series. Nuggets captain Karel Gut is expected to play in the big leagues next season and Eurekas! extra forward Henrik Sedin has already been drafted by a top level team to be on its call-up squad.

Actually, I heard this is a benefit for the families of Mike Keenan and Kirk Maltby, both in the past 5 ATDs, but lost their jobs this season and were not picked up for anyone's minor league squads, either.
Hey, Trapp was in a top pro league from age 22 to 28! Outscored Gardiner and Dutton handily. First all-star team along with Shore. Also, he was certainly not a failure at the ATD level; he was one of 29 AAA11 players someone saw fit to draft this time, and one of just 4 nuggets. He'll be a minor league call-up, but that's a step up!
