A Question on Nicklas Lidstrom at the 2006 Olympics

I noticed something strange. During 2006 Olympics, Nicklas Lidstrom wore blue pants with red stripes on the outside:

He seems to be the only Swedish player on the team to do so.

Moreover, he doesn't seem to have had those red stripes at any other international competitions.

I am genuinely curious: why? What exactly made him decide to include red stripes in his uniform at that particular tournament? And how could he manage to be the only player on his team to do so?

This is correct. In the same tournament when a couple of players' covers tore, the IIHF reminded that all equipment needs to match.

You'll see that for some of the Olympics with NHL players and World Champs with players arriving on short notice. Look at some of Lundqvist's highlights and you will see that he usually wears red Rangers pants underneath so he does not have to break a new pair in.
