Speculation: A Possible Cure For Pronger? Latendresse Was Cured Of Post Concussion Syndrome

Sorry if this has been posted before, I didn't see it here anywhere.

Very interesting article I found. Apparently, Guillaume Latendresse suffered severe post concussion syndrome much like Pronger.

He saw this doctor in Georgia who uses a machine called "GyroStim" to cure post concussion syndrome.

Could this be the cure for Pronger?

Latendresse, after being treated by a concussion specialist in Georgia who uses a contraption called a "GyroStim," has declared himself symptom-free from a concussion that destroyed his 2011-12 campaign. He said he can return to being the thunderous power forward who scored 25 goals in 55 games after a November 2009 trade from Montreal.

Eh...I feel like one big hit would put him right back where he started. Plus, the players that are being treated are a lot younger. I'm no doctor, but I think age might be a big factor. Would love to see Pronger come back though.

This. Though it may help the rest of his life, I can't imagine Chris would consider coming back to play this late.

Absolutely agree with this Chris has nothing left to play for. The guy won cup, a Hart trophy, a Norris trophy, more than likely a future HOF, and made millions and millions of dollars doing so. I would love to see him playing for us again but at this point it's not worth for him to come back. I think his focus should be getting healthy and trying to live normal life again.

Would love to see Pronger back and I'm sure he's been made aware of all the options out there, but as other posters have said, its all up to him.

His brother quoted as saying he doesnt think Chris will ever play again, although he added a quick 'what do i know' after that, so in reality, at his age, its tough, but anything is possible I guess.

If Pronger's career does end, it only strengthens my hate for the leafs. Awful team ruining the career of one of the best Dmen ever.....

It seems like the people behind that Gyrostim thing claim that Crosby spent 4 days on it too and they seem to be taking some of the credit for getting back on the ice: http://www.gyrostimblog.blogspot.com/2012/07/thanks-to-gyrostim-concussion-free.html

As far as Pronger goes, I really just wish people without medical degrees would stop speculating about him or saying medically incorrect things like "1 more hit and he's done". If Pronger is ever symptom free again, his doctors will advise him on what his prospects are and then he'll make a decision. In all likelihood though, unless he actually has permanent brain damage (which hasn't been reported and would likely prevent him from ever clearing a physical exam anyway), then the risk of Pronger being significantly injured from another hit would be about the same as any other NHL player.

Whether Pronger perceives that risk as being worth it or not is anyone's guess, but the quack medical opinions being expressed in every thread about Pronger are too much for me to take. Please, before posting anything about Pronger's chances of reinjury or saying "1 more hit and he's done", go do some actual research on concussions.

I'm sure a competitor of Pronger's caliber exhausted every and all options to become healthy enough to play.

Unless you're a neurologist and you're not letting on, there's some dissonance there. Never mind the fragility of recently concussed brains/recently repaired neural connections.

As nice as it would be to have Promger back, I think it's too late for a comeback. I would ne happy just knowing he could live out his life without pain.

At this point I would love Pronger just to be able to enjoy his life with his family, it would be worth it for him to check that out for that reason

I did use the word "likely". I'm not a neurologist, but I did play D1 football in college. I've been concussed 2 times. The most recent one occurred as part of a freak accident, not on the football field. This concussion gave me some mild PCS, so I sought out treatment from one of the leading neurologists in NYC. After about 2 months, things went back to normal, totally symptom free. When it came time to ask the doctor if I could return to contact sports (I continue to play football in a summer league), he explained that I was at no increased risk of reinjury, and that due to the specifics of my concussion (no permanent damage), a subsequent concussive incident wouldn't be likely to affect me any differently than a person with no history of concussions.

So am I an expert? No, I'm speaking from my experience, from what a top neurologist told me, and from the extensive research I did when I myself was injured. But I'd venture to say I've spent significantly more time on the topic than the guys here saying "1 more hit and he's done".

It's most likely that Pronger is done. He doesn't have anything left to prove, and if he even perceives the slightest risk in returning to hockey, it's probably not worth it. But if after his extreme case of PCS, a doctor puts their signature and their reputation on allowing Pronger to return to the ice (ie. passes him on his physical), then I feel confident that the doctors feel there's no added risk of reinjury and that Pronger could safely return to the ice.

Whether any of that happens remains to be seen.

^^This^^

If he ever got to play for the Flyers again, that would be fantastic, but it would be great just to see the guy attending the Wives Carnival with his family and no sunglasses on having a good time, or being able to go to his kids' games symptom free.

Yeah I agree too.

But can you imagine the Wach the minute he steps onto the ice again wearing orange?

Holy ****, goosebumps.

Do it first for his family, any extra is just a bonus of course.

He has a lot of time left on his contract and if a doctor clears him, he's either going to have to play or retire. If he is cleared (and I agree with your post, nobody knows if he will be symptom free in 2 or 3 years) and refuses to play, he will get suspended and his cap hit will count. It's not just about his health or whether he has anything left to play for, this is reality in a capped league.

Pronger needs to retire. Period. He's probably sustained one too many concussions throughout his playing career since a kid. He has a family to take care of and that cares for him.

research has shown that people who have sustained concussion are often more susceptible to having another. also multiple concussions may cause brain damage, though brain damage doesn't necessarily mean what you think. for all we know he already is brain damaged. he could just have PCS or a couple of it's symptoms for the rest of his life as a result.

age also has something to do with it. the older you get the harder it is to recover, it also increases the likelihood of getting a concussion.
