Lost among the high-scoring exploits of probable first-rounders Clayton Keller and Kieffer Bellows was the continued development of their oft-forgotten linemate, Minnesota native Joey Anderson. With 27 goals and 57 points on the season, Anderson finished third among all forwards on his team in points, only behind his high-profile linemates. The speedy forward, who is committed to play at the University of Minnesota-Duluth beginning next season, also proved he could raise his game in big moments when he tallied seven goals and nine points in just seven games at the World Under-18 Championships.

Anderson’s inability to assert himself as a difference-maker without elite linemates will likely make him the only member of his most frequent line this season to slip out of the first round. That being said, his tenacity and skill level would make for a solid value pick in the mid- to late-second round, and a steal for any team able to grab him later than that.

#73 Joseph/Joey Anderson

#67 on our draft list

Anderson shows that he can play the role of a gritty, complimentary forward for talented linemates. He also brings offensive instincts to the table as well. While the question mark is if Anderson will have enough skill at the next level to continue to be a top six forward, however even if he is not able to put up offensive numbers, his gritty game still gives him a chance to play a third or fourth line role. Anderson’s game is reminiscent of Scott Hartnell of the Columbus Blue Jackets but this is a stylistic comparison only and not a projection of talent level.

Did he play with Keller and Bellows all year? If so thought he'd have more points just due to that.

Still happy with the pick though.

This could be our best pick of the draft. He got underrated playing alongside two first round picks. Great talent in his own right.

Great pick, led the USA team in goals for U-18

Is he LW or RW?

Huge steal

Terrific pick.

Does all the little things, skates the lights out, fearless and competitive.

You don't play on the top line for the US-NTDP without great ability of your own, Anderson is not simply a product of Keller/Bellows. He's very reminiscent of a young Ryan Callahan and was one of the best picks of the middle rounds for any team.

Highlight clip there reminds me of Gallagher. Smaller side, but wreaks havoc in the goalmouth area.

I like this pick at No. 73 overall as Anderson's situation before being drafted is similar to Nathan Bastian's. In Mississauga, Bastian played with the Devil's first rounder in Mike McLeod and Buffalo's first rounder Alex Nylander and he was able to develop from that. We are lucky to have two-thirds of the top line for Mississauga in McLeod and Bastian, but Joey Anderson and his position in the USNDTP can relate to Bastian. Anderson played the entire season with Clayton Keller (Devils fans sigh in sadness when reading his name) and Kieffer Bellows. Both Keller and Bellows helped Joey Anderson develop into a player who can finish plays. Anderson also did not need to carry the bulk of the pressure on that line with 2 guys who were drafted 7th and 19th, as he knew he had talented players around him. Keller and Bellows helped Anderson as McLeod and Nylander helped Bastian. It is safe to say that Nathan Bastian has all the necessary tools to possibly develop into a Top 9 or even a Top 6 FWD in years to come compared to Anderson. In watching Joey Anderson play he is always at the front of the net looking for a rebound or deflection, because he knows a player like Keller or Bellows will get the puck to the net. Over the next few years as Anderson heads to Minnesota-Duluth University I would like to see if he develops in the creating plays aspect of the game before he could make the pro roster. Overall a great pick like all others we made on draft day this year.
