Mike O’Connell, when he was GM for the Bruins, I think they had a 3-way goaltender situation on the table, he re-signed Tim Thomas, which a lot of folks here found strange. Like a week later he got fired.

He is now with the Flyers.

One of the wildest things about Fletcher’s tenure is that the Giroux trade may go down as the best of his career, and definitely the best one with the Flyers. And he had zero leverage whatsoever. When you rebuild, at some point you gotta get lucky.
Wasn't I told he was bent over when he took Tippett?
Should have held out for the nonperforming Panther prospects!

Tippett is what you go for in prospects when you're rebuilding, a talented player who's under performed but also wasn't given a chance to work through growing pains. Size, speed, great wrist shot, had to learn to let the game come to him instead of rushing everything.

He had a great night, not just the goals, but the blocks, scoring chances he created for himself and teammates, back checking, even his improvement on the PK. He's got the raw tools to be elite, how close he comes is ??? He doesn't have great instincts, but he is coachable and has steadily progressed this season. If he only becomes a 2nd line 20+ goal scorer who plays 200' and eats minutes, well, that ain't a bad thang.

This game is an illustration of why culture matters and why burning it to the ground is stupid. Sabres have a boatload of high draft picks and are a top offensive team (3rd in the league in goals) that some here salivate over, but were bent over by a far less talented team that plays hard and with discipline.

Playing hard won't make you a winner, but it establishes a foundation where adding the right talented players (those who put team before personal stats) can become a winner.

they just dont get it, even if we get bedard who else is going to score goals for us? he gets shut down and we are back to square 1, you need more than 5 players that can score more than 20 goals to be a contender, bedard alone will not change anything.

I think it's funny how you post things like this, but then slam everyone for proposing any method of acquiring talent.

If it's driven by Hayes and JVR, it's meaningless.
If it's driven by Farabee, Frost, Tippett, Cates and York, it means the young core is improving, which is meaningful.

The Sabres may turn it around when Levi arrives, a 7th rd "throw-in" in the Reinhart trade, now the best goalie in the NCAA. But Anderson at 41 still has a .913 Sv% behind a team that isn't a defensive stalwart, so he probably won't make that big of a difference, more a transition. Though he should be a big upgrade from their backup goalies.

This of course, is the irony of "play the kids, not the veteran scrubs. We're rebuildling"
What if the kids play well?
