Vandevelde on the ice with Giroux and Simmonds in the final minute. Hakstol obviously really wants him to get an EN goal.

Why Hakstol uses his favorite line as the first or second line deployed at end of the game situations with the net empty is the biggest mystery to me. He did it last game the Hak line hung on for dear life during their shift. So he put Giroux's line out there & Schenn forced a turnover at the point to send Simmonds away for the rush which resulted in the ENG.

Just use the first & second lines in those situations firstly. They're your best lines at pushing the puck up ice.

Stifling d against the bolts the past two games. Forwards did a great job back checking after first 10 minutes.

That was a smothering team defense. Tampa Bay utilizing five forwards on the powerplay reeked of desperation as well, something practiced earlier in the week. Curious, too, in that they originally had seven defensemen dressed but apparently changed it in time; otherwise, an erroneous lineup would have been accompanied by a minor penalty to start the game. That could have been nothing more than an administrative oversight or perhaps some confusion among the brass as to who to play and/or scratch.

Surprised there were no assists given on the first goal.

First win in Tampa in five years.
