He can play with the collar on. Even allows immediate feedback on his play.

Nothing screams "building a winning culture" like deliberately losing by benching most of your remaining offense after JVR goes down in a back to back.
1st 2 periods - CF/CA 27-41, xGF/xGA 0.82-1.42
3rd period - CF/CA 22-8, xGF/xGA 0.66-0.36

Part of that was playing behind, but the team seemed to have received the message.

It's a shot at a lot of teams that have taken that route, the Blackhawks the last few seasons, even the Maple Leafs.
I don't watch enough of the Devils, but it may well apply, they've added some elite skill people but still struggle after a decade.
TB won two Cups b/c they stopped trying to outskill everyone and brought in Coleman, Goodrow, etc. and built a big, physical defense.
The AVs bottom six had speed, forechecked with limited skill, but top players like McKinnon and Makar play defense.

Offensive players often struggle for stretches, but teams that play defense, forecheck and back check consistently (all about effort) can stay competitive and buy time for their offensive stars to break out of their scoring slumps.
Watching the Devils forwards sometimes is like...
