Since I'm constantly tracking these numbers in my head anyway, I thought I might as well revive the tradition of a dedicated 6 in 5 thread. To those who don't know: 6 points in 5 games is a good rule of thumb for a pace that a team needs to maintain in order to reach the playoffs. To me it always served as a nice reminder to put recent results into perspective - regardless of other teams' points and games in hand. If you like it, I'll gladly post updates.

Thanks @BoJet this thread was always a favourite of mine. And I have little doubt we stay safely above 6-5 pace throughout the season. Don't look now, but the Jets are gradually morphing into a strong possession team. They currently sit 4th in Event, Score and venue adjusted Corsi at 55.89%
All of that is true however one caveat to keep in mind is that the schedule has been very easy so far. 1 game against an actual good team- Wild, 1 game against a mediocre bubble team- Predators and the rest against teams expected to draft top-10 or higher.

While it's good to do the job against these teams, I am waiting to see how they do when the schedules toughens up a bit as it is doing in this upcoming stretch.

Banking cheap points while Scheifele and Wheeler were out is fine by me!

But I’m capable of just enjoying things one step at a time. I find no value in not enjoying the now out of fear of the future.

I concur. As does Epictetus:

"I have to die. If it is now, well then I die now. If later, then now I will take my lunch, since the hour for lunch has arrived - and dying I will tend to later."

EDIT: Don't mind me, I just gave a talk about Stoic philosophy this week. Everyone around me now has to listen to this stuff.

EDIT: Don't mind the reply, should have been an edit. It's late where I am...

As you were Marcus Aureilus.

Stoic philosophy is very underrated

In this era where everyone seems to be shouting and nobody is listening Stoicism is more needed than ever.

Keep up the good fight.

The most amazing part to me is, so many things that people a struggling with today, misinformation, miscommunication, stress & anger multiplied by social media, grief, questions of control; these guys more or less had it figured out 2000 years ago. It's nice to see that their word is still getting out there. I'm not a true Stoic, though. I don't think I could be a Jets fan if I was. I don't mind yelling at inanimate objects every once in a while. Seguing back to the topic, 6 in 5 is just a nice reminder to myself to not get too worked up over the usual ebbs and flows during a season. IIRC, after the Jets lost the first two games in 2017-18, Buff said something along the lines of "it's just one game" and people including myself getting pissed off at this. Turns out.. it was, in fact, just one game.

One need not be a true stoic, or even close to it, to be able to occasionally apply the philosophy in specific circumstances.

Glad to see the 6 in 5 thread up and running (and glad it wasn't up after the first couple of games - it wouldn't have been great to see in that very small sample size). Very nice to remind us that it's a marathon, not a sprint.

And wow - Arizona and Chicago suck so far... And hopefully the Edmonton McD's come back to earth.

I'm new to checking in on this thread. Interesting concept. so 6 points every 5 games would put us at about 99 points.

I recall one year that Maurice was talking about viewing the season in 5 game chunks.

Buff was the best, worth the price of a ticket all on his own.

You may know him as the old dude from the movie Gladiator:
57309842bb59e6ca-600x338.png

He was a Roman emperor and the last of the ancient Stoics. His personal diary became one of the centerpieces of Stoic philosophy. I'll leave a few snippets of his wisdom here and leave it at that. After all, this is the 6 in 5 thread, no? Definitely worth a read, though.

"The universe is change; our life is what our thoughts make it."
“Waste no more time arguing about what a good man should be. Be one.”
“The best revenge is not to be like your enemy.”
“It is not death that a man should fear, but he should fear never beginning to live.”

And one of my all-time favorites:
"Begin the morning by saying to yourself, I shall meet with the busy-body,
the ungrateful, arrogant, deceitful, envious, unsocial. All these
things happen to them by reason of their ignorance of what is good
and evil. But I who have seen the nature of the good that it is beautiful,
and of the bad that it is ugly, and the nature of him who does wrong,
that it is akin to me, not only of the same blood or seed, but that
it participates in the same intelligence and the same portion of the
divinity, I can neither be injured by any of them, for no one can
fix on me what is ugly, nor can I be angry with my kinsman, nor hate
him, For we are made for co-operation, like feet, like hands, like
eyelids, like the rows of the upper and lower teeth. To act against
one another then is contrary to nature; and it is acting against one
another to be vexed and to turn away."

98.4 to be exact. ;) Highest minimum points needed to reach the playoffs in recent years was 98 (Blue Jackets 2019). Though it may be significantly less in the West this year. Always depends on the point spread between teams and the number of OT games. It is a bit arbitrary, but I just like the concept of basically having sets of best of five series. Averaging them at six points means you’re statistically safe to be just above the median (i.e. in the playoffs).

I agree, and as a fan, starting to look at 5 game sets is healthier than jumping off a cliff after a loss or two.

I've seen a few "thinkers" (Tim Ferriss, Sam Harris, Jonathan Haidt) also recommend William Irvine's the Stoic Challenge for Stoicism in a modern setting. However, you cannot go wrong with the ancients either! Seneca and Marcus Aurelius are timeless.

EDIT: Oh right, the Jets... they are showing plenty of promise. I think they will clear the 6 in 5 line all year long and this thread will turn more deeply into a study of Stoicism. :)
