I'd be interested in what the D numbers look like for good teams as well over the last decade.... say the Hawks and Kings.

From 05-06 to now
Blackhawks 48
Kings 44
Bruins 52
Red Wings 34
Pegnuins 50

Makes sense though right. If you're a good team, why turn-over your roster.

True... but that still a lot of turnover even for the better teams.

Injuries, retirements, contract issues, salary cap... lots of issues cause player turnover and I wouldn't necessarily say it's black and white that better teams have less turnover than worse teams although in a very general sense that's likely true.

I lurk here occasionally because I've taken interest in your team since mcdavid arrived. The kid is amazing. This question peaked my interest so

Nashville: 37 since 05-06. It does make sense because we usually have a good defensive group... Would likely be frightened to see how many forwards have come through though.

Kimmo timonen, marek zidlicky, Dan hamhuis, Ryan suter, danny Markov, shea Weber, mark eaton, Brendan Witt, Greg zanon, Jamie Allison, Kevin Klein, mikko lehtonen, vitaly vishnevsky, Sheldon brookbank, Ville koistinen, Greg de vries, Alexander sulzer, Cody franson, francis bouillon, Denis grebeshkov, teemu laakso, Shane o brien, Jonathon Blum, roman josi, Ryan Ellis, jack hillen, hal gill, mattias ekholm, victor Bartley, Scott hannan, Michael del zotto, Joe piskula, Anton volchenkov, Anthony bitetto, Barret Jackman, letter granberg, and Seth jones

Eh, there's a bit to both sides. A lot of those teams have had stints of being terrible since 05-06.

Similarly a lot of those teams have had at least one elite defenseman, and when you have one of those the rest of the defense corp matters less. You can turn over your 3-4-5-6 guys if need be when you have Lidstrom/Doughty/Chara/Keith. Anybody who comes in is automatically sheltered for half of the game.

Keep in mind there are twice as many forwards on a team vs dmen, so it wouldn't be surprising to see the number doubled or more on most teams.

Lets look at the Oilers. There has been 162 skaters who have played for the Oilers since the 05/06 season; 64 dmen and 98 forwards.

I just went through and calculated it out and since the 04/05 lockout we have had 64 defencemen play at least 1 game for the Oilers to date. The 6 who did not return to the team following our cup run being Pronger, Cross, Semenov, Spacek, D. Smith, and Ulanov. But here is the list of the Oilers rotating door.

Adam Clendening | Corey Potter | Sheldon Souray
Eric Gryba | Bryan Rodney | Sebastien Bisaillon
Griffin Reinhart | Nick Schultz | Tom Gilbert
Andrej Sekera | Andy Sutton | Jan Hejda
Keith Aulie | Colten Teubert | Ladislav Smid
Brandon Davidson | Shawn Belle | Daniel Tjarnqvist
Mark Fayne | Kurtis Foster | Bryan Young
David Musil | Richard Petiot | Matt Greene
Nikita Nikitin | Jeff Petry | Chris Pronger
Darnell Nurse | Jim Vandermeer | Mathieu Roy
Jordan Oesterle | Dean Arsene | Dan Smith
Anton Belov | Aaron Johnson | Jaroslav Spacek
Taylor Fedun | Johan Motin | Danny Syvret
Andrew Ference | Alex Plante | Dick Tarnstrom
Mark Fraser | Ryan Whitney | Marc-Andre Bergeron
Brad Hunt | Taylor Chorney | Cory Cross
Oscar Klefbom | Jason Strudwick | Alexei Semenov
Philip Larsen | Lubomir Visnovsky | Steve Staios
Martin Marincin | Denis Grebeshkov | Igor Ulanov
Mark Fistric | Theo Peckham | Jason Smith
Justin Schultz | Joni Pitkanen |
Cam Barker | Allan Rourke |

This does not include the times we used a player like Steve MacIntyre on defense.

I didn't realize "memory lane" is located in the 7th sphere of hell.
