Yes, we historically lose the first game of a playoff series under Cooper's tenure. But Monday night was deeply concerning. Most troubling was the absence of a forecheck and tenacity. The lazy response is that we no longer have Coleman, Gourde and Goodrow. To be sure, they would have made a difference and helped set the right tone. Yet in every playoff run dating back to 2015 (putting the Columbus series to the side for the outlier that it was), we have controlled games with our forecheck, relentlessness, and intensity. This hallmark was nowhere to be found in game one. We looked slow, disinterested and unable to dictate the terms of the game. Also concerning was the fact that Kucherov looked out of sorts and akin to his 2019/Columbus version. Nothing was going right for him. Hopefully we see another team out there tonight.
And please - dear god - go back to what works: Palat, Point, Kucherov; McDonagh/Cernak; Hedman/Rutta; Serg/Bogosian. The line blender makes no sense right now. The only player that really had jump was Colton. I say combine Paul, Stamkos and Colton as the second line. And then put Killorn, Cirelli, and Hagel together as the third.
