Preface; The Birth of a Fanatic
About 16 years ago, there was a team. This team made a miraculous run quite unlike any other in the history of their franchise. To say the Edmonton Oilers were a fantastic hockey team in the 1980s would be an understatement. They won 5 championships of course! There was always just one problem… I wasn’t born until 1994. The Great One had been traded 6 years prior to that point. The 2006 playoff run was special from those dynastic teams. Different. They were underdogs and everyone in town knew it. Yet they worked incredibly hard and were fun to watch in their own way.

I was 11 at that time. Before that, I had never really got into hockey. I remember 2002 when Canada won at the Salt Lake City Olympics. Sometimes I would watch the odd game on CBC (my childhood was humble and we only had 5 tv channels) with my grandfather, but the sport I eventually came to love was always just sort of “there” to me without much significant meaning… until 2006 of course. Everything changed that year. That game in which the Oilers upset and eliminated the Redwings utterly stunned me. Despite losing in a best of 7 series to the Carolina Hurricanes in that year's cup final, that run made me a hockey fan. The atmosphere around town in those days was simply incredible. It introduced me to something I became passionate about. If a person reading this thread traveled back in time to that the day after the Oilers lost game 7 that year and told an 11 year old me that “The Oilers were going to make the playoffs only twice in the next 15 years,” I’d tell them they were crazy but if such a thing were to happen, I would quit cheering for them…

Yet I never did quit. I stayed interested despite all the awful years of frustration and disappointment and enjoyed the 2017 playoffs. I won’t get into the details and bring up bad memories of what followed since none of you want to hear it, so I’ll get to the point and stay positive. I’m absolutely thrilled that we all have a chance to see players like Connor and Leon lead the Oilers in a playoff series with a pretty good cast of players to support them. Fans older than me have said that this is a lot what the 80s were like. I can believe that. So let’s have some fun tonight and cheer our team on! If you’d ask me, this team, on paper, is better than the 2006 roster… and it is only a matter of time before a cup comes back to the city of champions…

A Quick Overview:
This is a the tale of 2 teams… Both hungry for success. Over the course of their history, they have played each other 6 times in the 1980s. The Oilers beat the Jets in all of them. In more recent times, the Edmonton Oilers have seen regular season success for a couple years. The Jets have as well this season despite not in the year previous. Yet during the earlier days of the pandemic last year, both lost their play in rounds. Now, after a dominant showing by the Oilers, who have gone 7-2 in the regular season against the Jets, they willface each other once again for the first time in 31 years... Very simply put, it all comes down to which will be more effective; The nuclear fission-like offense of McDavid and Draisaitl or the four versatile, scoring lines of the Jets.

Personal Game Prediction:
McDavid and Draisaitl pick up right where they left off and the Oilers win 4-2!

Personal Series Prediction:
Oilers win in 6!

Personal BOLD Series Prediction:
With the help of some hard working veterans, Ryan McLeod will explode offensively and become a key part of the team’s success.

A Few Other Notes:
To keep you entertained before liftoff, I have shared 5 of my choice songs that get me amped for this series! Whatever your musical taste is, I'm pretty confident you will enjoy at least one of them. I could have been a troll and posted 5 Nickelback songs instead but I'd probably get my account suspended for it. I'm not that much of a jerk.

Don’t forget the poll too. Hearing what you want me to do should if the Oilers win the cup this year will be a lot of fun!

Acknowledgements:
In this, my first ever GDT, I'd like to give thanks to @5 Min 4 Ftg who allowed me to scoop up the first game of the playoffs. I'd also like to thank all the posters on this board who I’ve been able to cheer and laugh with since I joined back in 2019. I never had an account here up until the old OMB shut down. A few of you probably know me from over there. It’s been addicting but also great fun… and given the circumstances, I'd say it’s about to get even better! My personal choice of playoff avatar complete with playoff face is up and I’m ready to watch some fantastic hockey! LET’S GO OILERS!

@94 Oil Drops

Awesome GDT, that’s like a professionally done movie poster!

If the Oilers win the Cup I chose to see you eat haggis and I will be right there beside you eating it too!

And as one of the venerable “old timers” it’s a cool story to read how the 06 team hooked so many younger fans like yourself.

I saw how my own sons got amped for the playoffs back then, in fact my eldest son and his friend made the cover of the Edmonton Sun all decked out in their Oilers gear standing near Rexall with their Oilers signs before one game.

My dad who was in BC flew in for one of the Cup Finals game, he was so excited for the team and his plane blew an engine over Golden where they had to make an emergency landing. Thankfully the plane had 2 engines....anyway he was not going to let that stop him. He was coming to a Cup Final like what we watched in the 80s come hell or high water.

He chartered a plane in Golden on the spot to take him the rest of the way to Edmonton and I picked him up from the old Municipal Airport and we made opening face off with minutes to spare.

He got pretty looped at the game and on the way back to the car after the win he tripped over a curb and nearly knocked out all his front teeth out. We went to the casino afterword and had a blast, bloody teeth and all haha.

That is the power of Oiler fandom. Or the booze. But man did we have a crazy great time that day cheering on the Oilers. It was one for the ages.

Finally back in the playoffs and this time we’re not just a plucky underdog. We could win this thing. We have the best 2 players in the world, a goalie whose playing lights out and a very capable defense.

Thx for the GDT!!

Let’s Go Oilers!!!!!

I grew up in Winnipeg and hated the Oilers with the heat of a thousand suns. In the 80's the Jets were mostly doormats, and it was not until 1990 when things were really looking up. First round, 3 games to 1 over the hated Oilers (no longer with Gretzky) it was time for the Jets to close out a series and go on a long run in the playoffs! I don't remember how that series finished...

In 1996 I moved my family to Edmonton and the Winnipeg Jets were soon to be no more (3 months later in fact). I could not make myself root for the Coyotes and the Oilers were...different now. They were mostly doormats and I felt it was like old times with my (new) home team. Then 2006 happened and it was amazing, I watched every game, and it was a heck of a ride (the original NHL Jets only won 2 first round playoff series over 17 seasons!)

The Jets came back in 2011 (well, Jets 2.0 by way of Atlanta) but I found myself conflicted. I had invested almost 20 years in my new home team, mostly sad-sack years but...2006 was so much fun.
Now… the Jets (2.0) are my #2 team and I find myself rooting for the Oilers against them. If you could go back in a time machine and tell my 1990 self that...that this would be the case...my 1990 head would explode with the heat of a thousand suns...

Anyway...Go Oilers! Whichever team wins, beat the Maple-Habs and represent Canada well.
